Etsy Confirms It Is Testing Item Page Layout
By: Ina Steiner
Etsy's Adam Brown confirmed the marketplace is experimenting with the item listing page design (see Friday's Newsflash article), but told me the company does not give details about experiments in progress so as not to bias the results.
In general, sellers don't like changes for several reasons. In this case, they worry that shoppers won't see the most relevant information upfront and are concerned it may make more work for them if they have to edit their listings to optimize for the new design.
A seller explained that she feared it would confuse shoppers into thinking they were buying from "Etsy" rather than an individual seller.
"If you click on our "tags", it takes you to other items not in our shop. One of the biggest sources of confusion with Etsy is that customers think they purchased everything from "Etsy" - not from the individual shop. I often get so many emails such as "where is my xxxx" and I have no idea what they are talking about, and here, they bought that particular item from another shop and thought everything came from me. I also love it when they say "Hi Etsy" - as if I am ACTUALLY Etsy. Please do not add further confusion for customers."
Several sellers referenced eBay in their comments and emails. One seller wrote:
"I love change and usually you guys are spot on but boy who ever talked you into this new design must have come from EBAY because that's exactly how it now feels. if you had read the other threads of WANTS from shop owners you would have known that what we want and need is a more accurate way to calculate shipping based on weight class, box size and geographic location. Or a better way to organize and add onto the section/categories of our shop. So please take the R&D money that you're investing in revamping the layout and spend it on those tools."
You can read the thread where sellers are discussing the Etsy test - now's the time to let Etsy know what you think!
