How Will Deluge of Motors Listings Impact eBay.com Search?

By: Ina Steiner

In a surprise announcement on Tuesday, eBay announced it was merging listings from eBay Motors into core search results on eBay.com. eBay spokesperson Todd Witkemper said having two sites was confusing to customers and said the change would roll out in April.

eBay launched eBay Motors as a separate site within eBay on April 24, 2000. On its 13th anniversary, eBay Motors Vehicle listings in all Vehicles categories will be integrated into eBay.com while continuing to reside on the eBay Motors site.

The move is reminiscent of eBay adding Store inventory to core search results. At the time, some eBay sellers said it overwhelmed search results and made it more difficult for shoppers to find their listings.

Just how good a job will eBay do at differentiating between searches for toy cars and searches for real cards? As I asked in today's news story, will a search for "Mini Cooper convertible" bring back Mattel's $26.99 Ken and Barbie Mini Cooper toy alongside a $26,000 Mini Cooper automobile?

With little to no reaction on discussion boards that I could find, I suspect sellers haven't fully absorbed what the announcement means. Let us know what you think!

I sell only ONE part generally that is under the MOTORS section.  However---Motors has ALWAYS been a sort of Dark and Scary place for most buyers--and from what I have heard and seen--for sellers to go to.  All of the set ups and forms are completely different and confusing.  Finding something listed can be a--challenge.

The basic IDEA of Motors is good---who wants to get a Ford Fiesta ad coming up when you are in fact looking for tableware?  But that is not quite so scary as the part where when you DO a search looking for something listed on Motors it REFUSES to LET YOU GO.

This used to be ONLY Motors but now it has "spread" to large areas of the site--inc when you search for something and then want to look at something completely different and you CAN'T without returning to MY EBAY.  A different step that is annoying and takes TIME.  There USED to be TWO "Search Fields" where there is now just ONE that can only be used to do CERTAIN things and once you are sucked in there it is hard to LEAVE.

Makes me shudder to think that the same morons who produced THIS fine mess are now tinkering once AGAIN with search.

@Anonymous Annie

When has Wall Street reacted in a negative manner?

Maybe when the Enron scheiss hit the proverbial fan, but they always react positively. That way, they can sell their crap to masses who look to them for guidance.

I'm assuming it is bad practice (or criminal) to short the company (on your own account) you are reacting positively about. So beating the drum and collecting the fees will just have to do.

Hmmmm.. This clunky lemon has finally coasted to the side of the road and refuses to start, they tried jumper cables but that didn't work.

Must be all those deadbeat bidders or even possibly bid bots that fleeced ma and pa out of $125 fvf for that FREE car listing got around. Now they are trying to steer more suckers over from the core site. LOL!

Motors search is also filled with millions of generic floor mats, steering wheel covers, etc. Wait until all that garbage starts filling up core searches.

Wanna laugh? Go look up ebaymotors.com on Alexia.. Another big LOL!

I'm just an occasional seller but this is the final straw for me.  Ebay has finally stepped over the red line.  I'll not be listing with them any longer.

This also accommodates my decision not to put up any more listings until Congress gets their collective heads out of the dark place.

Two birds, one stone.

@Al ... I was trying to be sarcastic. Actually, I see nothing good about this, but it seems that the reaction from WS never mirrors my own.

I don't know why I did not think of this sooner, but...

The main reason eBay will roll Motors into core is....wait for it....

WALL STREET!!!

Until now, when eBay has reported quarterly GMV, they have always indicated that the figure does not include eBay Motors.

With motors rolled into core, eBay will be able to once again bamboozle Wall Street by inflating GMV figures using Motors volume to confuse analysts.

eBay knows that Cassini is going to significantly cut into sales.  Rather than allow Wall Street to see the Cassini driven decline in sales, eBay is throwing a blanket over the dismal numbers to come by adding Motors into core at the same time they roll out Cassini.

John Donahoe wants to hide the damage Cassini will inflict on sellers and sales.

Rolling Motors into core will make it impossible for analysts or investors to accurately assess any negative impact eBay experiences as a result of the new search engine.

More lies and deception from the CEO and his hand picked team of grossly over compensated con artists.

I have to ask, was this done to boost marketplace revenues, so they can trot out someone next quarter and say "look at how well marketplaces is doing"?  The smoke and mirrors continues.

I guess they want to throw everything possible at Cassini and see if it can handle the load.

This should be interesting . . .

Annie - nothing impugned. I'm sure you know how the business world works by now.....

All Wall Street knows how to do is make money for Wall St. There used to be something called investment banks which actually invested in companies to finance them. Now, those institutions have, for the most part, been rolled into the mega-bank and is on par with their credit-card & retail B&M storefront operations.

The repeal of Glass-Steigel is allowing the "too big to fail institutions" to become too big to fail.

It was much safer (for the US) having many Lilliputians & getting swatted by Gulliver & still able to tie him down. Nowdays, Gulliver can't swat even one without the system collapsing.

Is this a reasonable metaphor?

It is the same thing with creating the "search monster" eBay's notoriously poor programming staff is doing. One swat & we all suffer.

Don't even bother to bring shareholders into this.  Ebay stock pays NO dividends...its just a crap shoot of buy low and sell a bit higher...making chump change in small increments.  Nobody really buys it as a solid investment.

I think a better license plate would be EBAY WTF. I think that is more descriptive of the way things are going with the constant policy changes and site "improvements."

This issue is a typical eBay Cluster F.

The issue WAS (and I was told this by eBay themselves)(the morons) that originally PARTS was supposed to be rolled in to the main search and NOT vehicles.

Why? (see RICs post) .... too many people were listing car electronics (radar, car stereos etc) in parts over on eBay motors and eBay wanted it stopped.

So that was plan A. It would correct the issue of clogging up the parts section and give revenue (theres RIC being right again) to eBay ''Main'' ... since sales this year on eBay for the holidays STINK ON ICE. (my Amazon sales are 5x better then eBay).

Then the geniuses that be at eBay decided that the revenue wasnt enough to offset the poor sales.

In comes genius #2 and takes Ric's idea to its logical conclusion - if you fold vehicles into eBay then you can count the sales in you gross sales numbers.

Folding it into ''Main'' isnt going to help anyone besides eBay but it does make sence - who needs an extra section aka Motors?

The thing is - if you make the Motors section available on the front page, theres less room for the Toysrus banner, the Sonicelectronics banner, and the HUGE buyer protection racket notification would have to be reduced.

That would cause revenue - advertising loss - so just fold it in and hope for the best!

Stupid eBay, ecommerce isnt for kids ... like you

In other words, eBay is not selling enough cars and are hoping the core exposure will help.

I never understood buying a car on ebay anyway. Too risky. Besides, how many sellers want to lose $125 over and over again? Parts, yes. Cars, no.

Close Doc but no cigar.

eBay knows from their testing that when Cassini is implemented, sales volume in core is going to drop.

They have invested so much time and revenue in developing Cassini they can not afford not to implement it even though they know from their own testing that it will cause sales to drop.

Rather than show investors their self inflicted wounds, the plan is to hide the damage Cassini will bring by folding Motors sales volume into core.

They will bamboozle Wall Street once again because analysts are not intelligent enough to realize the wool is being pulled over their eyes.
