eBay Sellers Should Watch Out for Local Pickup

By: Ina Steiner

eBay sellers are reporting that local pickup is being offered as a delivery option in their listings even though they didn't turn on the setting. A seller reported it on Ecommerce EKG on November 3rd.

The seller explained, "I had item listed with calculated shipping but it only shows "Local Pickup" when viewed. I turned that off; still broken. Ended and relisted; still broken. I will have to create new listing."

Having to create a new listing is costly for those who discover the problem, and potentially more worrisome for those who don't discover the issue until a buyer demands to pickup the item in person even though the seller doesn't offer that option.

On November 17, the well-known forum poster Shipscript reported they and other sellers were experiencing the same issue: "Free Local Pickup erroneously shows in several of my listings and in some of the listings of a number of other sellers (shown in my spreadsheet) who have reported on the forums."

Shipscript, who is a third-party developer, did extensive testing in reporting the issue, spending hours to try to determine the cause of the glitch. One important piece of information Shipscript noted: "The Local Pickup carries through to checkout and can be selected, so it is not simply a display issue."

An eBay moderator said they would open a ticket and asked Shipscript if they were able to create a brand new listing from scratch to see if the issue was still happening. "Sorry this took so long - it required many hours of additional testing," Shipscript replied, before providing extensive information about the latest tests they had conducted to answer the question.

As of November 21, we did not see a ticket about the local-pickup glitch on the eBay Technical Issues board.

The bottom line for readers: if you sell on eBay, check your listings for incorrect information and erroneous settings caused by eBay glitches.

Why isn’t eBay doing their OWN testing?

Three gue$$e$.

Etsy is experiencing "shop interference".
Some of my settings were changed.
Ever since Ebay and Etsy were joined at the hip, we have Tech Contagion.

I was looking on eBay this morning to see what prices some items were selling for that I was thinking of listing in my eCrater store. Every listing I looked at offered local pickup. Generally I've seen sellers offering pick-up on big or bulky items, but this was for action figures. There's definitely some kind of glitch going on.

As a seller, I would not be much interested in meeting up with buyers for local pick up.  With gas prices like they are now, it's not FREE to the seller or the buyer.  I'd like this concept better if there was an official eBay location where buyers and sellers could do in-person transactions, but this would only be doable in high population areas with a significant amount of eBay transactions.  It wouldn't ever work for me as a seller because my wares do not match 95+ percent of local tastes, and eBay sellers I favor are hundreds of miles away from me.

I remember during the pandemic, Amazon kept sending me emails about having my purchases (what purchases?) sent to the local RITE AID pharmacy for pick up.  Sure, it was close by, but did I really want to go indoors with people lining up for COVID testing to pick up parcels?  Nope.  Getting infected from surface contamination of a parcel left outside my front door was super low risk, but being in an over-heated crowded indoor space was actually risky.

Where do these corporations get these wacky ideas?

I'm in the opposite position, I would love to have people come and pickup their purchases at my place.  Would anyone reading this know how to ''turn on'' the local pickup option in all my listings at once?  I work out of a commercial building so it would be a good thing for me.

As eBay is now paranoid about sellers giving buyers their address before they have completed purchased item/s, (as they “eBay” believes everyone wants to rip them off, by selling privately once they have the sellers address).
eBay will not assist with a transaction that occurred beyond its purview.
“eBay’s certification systems can only protect buyers and sellers when transactions occur directly on the website.”  A sale is considered completed off eBay, (IE) if buyer picks up merchandise, even with approved electronic payment methods and proof of pickup. buyer nor sellers are covered by our protection programs, if something goes wrong, and you (the seller) still need to pay the fees.”

Here’s a thought - and as astonishing as it may seem, is also ‘constructive’.  How about eBay sets the default as all ‘listing options’ remain UNenabled until a seller actually chooses to enable it?

I know, crazy, right?

I'm the one who originally reported the problem. Everything on shipping is FUBAR since they messed with the listing pages. Shipping and pickup options were formerly set at the listing level; now they want pre-canned "shipping policies" created. That may work for larger sellers, but not for everyone. As with all changes of this kind, there should be an "Opt Out" feature. eBay loves to "fix" stuff that "ain't broke" and when they do, the Indians inevitably break it. When speaking to a CSR about this, I mentioned that in competently run organizations [ie. OTHER than feeBay!] people are fired for these cork ups. Not in San Jose, though!

So, both shipscript and I have personally communicated with CSR's [or, as I like to dub them, Customer NON-Service Rep's] about the problem, been told it's real, yet feeBay has not disclosed the problem on their own forum? Only conclusion I can draw from that is that so much squirrelly script [code] has been written, hastily and untested, that the whole Indian army has no clue where to look for the bug ..er, "feature!" They're in full-blown panic/denial mode. Since the "issue" isn't even identifiable, they're burying it. Of course, it didn't need to happen in the first place; this is another self-inflicted wound.

As a legitimate business not run from a basement or a bedroom I am more than happy to let anyone pick up anything and provide a discount for doing so. Nobody ever does. This isn’t a huge deal. Its a good reminder why you shouldn’t use third party listing / inventory software. This is the kind of thing that causes a disconnect and days of stressful fixing. Ebay will fix it, 3rd party software may or may not, if they do its slow. Next month something similar will happen, and the month after, and the month after that. Developer cares so much because he knows its what keeps people from using 3rd party software.

Shipping and business policies do work for everyone. You are just being lazy.

It works for large sellers because they have already experienced the time suck of setting shipping individually. Buyers need a consistent policy. Your spinning your wheels creating flat and calculated rates that make buyers do math and hinder your search standing. Most shipping is predictable. If you aren’t doing free shipping with business policies then you’re doing it wrong.

A local pick up sale can't go wrong.

You bring me the cash I give you the product.

Tool - you want people knowing where you live and seeing what you own??

These people who could come to your house are strangers not cousins- I know that I wouldn’t want it - unless I had a firearm.

Someone sees you have a collection of great tools (expensive) and makes a visit when you aren’t home ………

Note to CT Bay: maybe if feeBay had simply retained the old way of specifying shipping, and allowed an OPT OUT of the new, and NOT improved system, they'd have avoided this debacle?

Additional note to "CT Bay" - no, I'm not using "third party listing software." I'm using only what feeBay's incompetent Indians have written, failed to test, and installed anyway. San Jose owns this; you can't shift blame onto anyone else.

Note to LDWCallsOut: - in theory, you could create a system using lockers like Amazon has at convenience stores, etc. However, they have the traffic to make that practical; feeBay doesn't, at least not in every neighborhood. I sell on Craig's and I can tell you that scheduling meet-up's with buyers isn't easy. Lots of deals fall through simply b/c the would-be buyer doesn't need the item badly enough to make it worth the perceived bother.
