Online Sellers Urgently Need Messaging on Shipping Delays

Things are getting ugly for sellers as the USPS is getting bogged down. A message at the top of the USPS.com website says it's experiencing unprecedented package increases and limited employee availability due to the impacts of COVID-19. "We appreciate your patience and remain committed to delivering the holidays to you."

However, recipients who check the USPS Service Alerts page to see if there are disruptions won't see that red banner at the top, and if they click on "Residential Customers," there are no general warnings of delivery delays.

Worse still, the USPS issued a press release on Monday encouraging customers to send their holiday gifts and cards as soon as possible but making no adjustments to its holiday shipping cut-off dates to account for the logjams and delays.

How the USPS is reportedly communicating with buyers who report delays is coming under criticism on the eBay for Business Facebook page. Some sellers have posted letters supposedly sent by USPS Postmasters or representatives acknowledging their packages are delayed-but-on-the-way, with one postmaster reportedly advising buyers to "contact the sender for a refund."

Marketplace sellers are in a particularly tough spot since they have little control on how platforms like eBay handle complaints from buyers who open item-not-received claims.

In what appears to be a ray of hope for some sellers, an eBay moderator is telling sellers who report problems on the eBay for Business Facebook thread that they can Private Message ("PM") them on Facebook for help.

The following is an example of an eBay for Business moderator responding to a seller who said they got dinged for late delivery even though they didn't have delivery guarantee dates:

"Thank you for letting us know. If you had an acceptance scan in time, you shouldn't have a ding or defect for late shipment even if it shows up late. Feel free to PM us your full name, postal code, and registered email address if you need further help with it. ~Kelly"

In the meantime, it appears retailers and marketplaces continue to promote holiday shopping with little or no warnings to buyers of likely delays.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy discussed the holiday season in a special year-end video message to employees on Monday. He said the Postal Service is expecting as much as a third more mail this holiday season than last year. "We are seeing this strong volume in the network in every part of the country," he said.

"Our competitors are likely to get more volume than they can handle - which means we may be getting a lot of overflow," he said.

Among the measures the Postal Service took: adding over 50,000 seasonal workers, adding more transportation, working overtime, and delivering on Sundays in most markets.

DeJoy also mentioned COVID, sending thoughts and prayers to those suffering or who lost loved ones. "Your safety is important to me, so please practice safe distancing, wear your mask, and use hand sanitizer."

"We continue to see high rates of absenteeism in hotspots around the country. This has had an impact on local and national service performance, and it adds stress throughout the workforce," he said.

The Washington Post said the USPS was "gridlocked" and "overwhelmed" in a piece about holiday packages delays today - it said even first-class mail, including letters and bills, is seeing delays. "The Postal Service told Congress that only 78.9 percent of first-class mail was delivered on time during the week of Nov. 28, well below its internal goal of 96 percent."

It's gut-wrenching to read sellers on industry boards discussing the delays. They indicate the problem started last month. On one thread, sellers said packages sent Media Mail in November took ages to arrive, with some still stuck in limbo.

A significant winter storm is set to make things worse - Weather.com said it will impact the interior Northeast and near parts of the Interstate 95 corridor from southern New England to New York City and areas near Philadelphia.

Let us know what you're seeing out there and what you're hearing from marketplaces and buyers.

That has got to be one of the most asinine comments I have ever read. You never cease to lower yourself to a new level.

Problem also is, when the buyer opens a not received case, it automatically holds the funds!! I just had this happen because the item showed it left my post office and vanished. I open 3 ''where's my package'' claims with the PO that it was arriving to. Got a call yesterday from the receiving PO and they told me it hadn't left the Phoenix PO. I refunded the buyer (or closed the claim and eBay refunded the buyer) and miracles happen. It ''arrived'' to the Phoenix PO early this morning. 2 other packages I mailed the same day arrived as well.

From what I understand packages were being held in trailers there. Well, this trailer was obviously forgotten.

It has been mentioned before but making matters MUCH worse, is eBay is interpreting the USPS will be late entry in tracking as a pending acceptance. So even though the parcel shows a acceptance and has a entry for the first distro center, the buyer thinks it has not shipped. And I don't blame the buyer as they are not experts. The experts at eBay need to get their act together and do something correct. After 10 or 15 of these screaming inquiries a day it gets very old.

Another very real issue is eBay allowed a buyer to open a INR case after only 3 business days of transit for a first class parcel. The first day of the three was the day it was ordered and shipped so it really only had two real transit days. Of course managed payments held funds. So a big thank you to eBay and for the boiler plate remedy telling us how buyers are concerned when their orders are late. Fine and dandy IF it was late. Hell, it takes two possibly three days to send a parcel to myself.

Get used to it. What we are witnessing is a first world country turning into a second world country. Same thing happened to Argentina about 20 years ago.

There have been problems every year with delivery times. The lag has happened in many previous years before Trump even appointed him - add Covid to the mix and it gets worse. Get over the TDS.

IDK, I saw this coming. So I closed down on Dec 4th.  I figured USPS would be messed up, and with ebay, amazon, and reverb the way they are (everything automated), I would have a ton of INR's, when in actuality they are just very late. Not worth the hassle, of having to beg buyers not to leave a neg, having to make calls to USPS, and giving a ton of refunds.  All the venues should have seen this coming. Instead they just play stupid and dont plan anything.

"usps is approving claims very quick."

No, they aren't. I have a claim that's currently "Under Review" since 3 weeks from today.

I sent a package from Chicago suburbs to Anaheim via a package pickup from my parcel locker on NOV 9TH. There was never even an initial scan until DEC 3RD, and even that was only after I submitted an inquiry on the 17th that went UNANSWERED and then an insurance claim submitted on the 26th that currently is still UNANSWERED as well.

I phoned the USPS on Dec. 2nd and after waiting 2.5 hours for a call back finally spoke to a rep who started the process that got my package located (in my home city, probably still sitting at the PO). The package was then delivered on Dec. 7th, 27 days after I shipped it.

I of course had to refund the buyer the $54. I am left waiting for the reimbursement check that will probably never come.

““ Feel free to PM us your full name, postal code, and registered email address if you need further help with it. ~Kelly"”

This is where eBay drops synch. Behind that, as the static ensues, Kelly is not empowered to actually ACT on what she acknowledges as improper application of metrics - post application. Even if she were, imagine the backlog. She’d not have time for such carefully canned reply.

So it’s incumbent upon eBay to establish an efficient link to a staff dedicated to second tier troubleshooting - in the same fashion as for debugging a software execution - which it effectively is for the sellers with existing override needs. And that includes an efficient intake link to all the ‘Kelly’s’ out there - with a feedback loop so to re-synch with THEIR “messaging”.

Could be however, while eBay seems to dawdle, that it costs less to ride a float unearned than invest in increasing longer term profit earned from supplying critical service? Because that’s what their ‘transmitting’ by their silent inaction.

Meanwhile, for the Parcel Post, consider what it takes to ‘admit’ a shortcoming as described in their posted advisories. Notwithstanding the need to identify the scope of the issues first. Absorbing unprecedented impacts on a massive logistics scale in the midst of political and pandemic turmoil is numerically challenged by cause and effect multiplying tentacles of volume increases - on top of a typical seasonal uptick. While they sort all that out though, while weathering critique both earned and not, they clearly and nevertheless, at least post a generalized warning.

As sellers who lay claim to ‘their’ businesses though, with every deserved outcry following an eBayjustment, what clue might be taken from the very title of this thread? “Sellers urgently need messaging”.

What if it said as it implies? Buyers urgently need messaging.
Or perhaps, Customers urgently need messaging.

Over....

Refunded two more buyers this morning due to the failure of USPS to deliver when eBay estimated they would.  That makes 8 in the past week and a half.  All 8 were shipped on either Nov 30 or Dec 3.

Don't feel bad yet, I have refunded 16 and still getting INR cases. USPS deserves a lawsuit over this. Just depressing

i am being honest , UPS and Fed Ex are as bad as the USPS , if not worse. It is a disaster all the way around , this should  have been my busiest week on Ebay , for the year. People are afraid to buy, they know , all about the shipping delays. Hell , it was the 2nd story on the 3 local news channels tonight. Ebay is going to have to do some serious promo's , starting in January , to get the buyer back. And don't get me started on Amazon , they are a #$%^-show for sellers , right now. Worse then Ebay.

UPS Ground: Mailed on 16th from FL, got delivered to NY on the 19th.
USPS First Class: Mailed on 16th, still stuck in a FL sorting center.

Terrible. I may give up on USPS entirely after this season, free packaging be damned.
