Sellers Report eBay Is Overbilling Them: End of Month Glitch?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay provides sellers with a certain amount of free listings each month. But on Friday, the last day of the month, it began charging sellers listing fees even though according to its own reports, should have been free.

A reader reported the glitch on the Ecommerce EKG board:

"Went to use the last 50 free listings for the month that were supposed to expire at 12:59:59 PDT but they were gone before 1am EDT. When refreshing my eBay page the messages with the offers appear for a second and then disappear with nothing left."

Another reader wrote to EcommerceBytes about the problem. He said, "Sometime during the day on 7/31/2020, eBay stopped honoring their 50 free monthly listings (another programming bug) and started charging listing fees for relists and listings."

He said he had verified it was happening to multiple sellers.

Adding to his concern: he was unable to report the problem to eBay - they are no longer taking calls, he said.

Sellers also reported that eBay had incorrectly billed them on the eBay seller discussion boards:

Link to thread titled, "Why am I being charged listing fees suddenly when it says I have 23 free listings left?"

Link to thread titled, "I have 14 free listings that don't expire until midnight..." In that thread, a seller said that because the glitch wasn't fixed before midnight, they lost the remaining 14 free listings eBay was obligated to provide them. "This morning eBay has repopulated my 200 (addl free) listings for August but it did not populate my normal 50 free a month."

In his letter to us, the EcommerceBytes reader advised sellers to check their invoices. "Make sure to get the word out for people to check their invoices if they listed today and to keep an eye out for any new relists in August."

We've been unable to find any report from eBay addressing the problem.

Along with your astute comments, sellers should also ponder the possibilities of employee leaked information (as was the case with recent Twitter hacks), disgruntled ex-employee actions, and the hacking of servers located on foreign soil.

One also has to wonder if the foreign associates who are handling this personal information are both bonded and vetted in the same manner as Americans are.

Well Vigilant Eye On eBay, years ago, there was no such thing as a PP debit card.
Years ago, everything we sold was paid with check, (with a 10 day hold), USPS money order, and cash.
International sales were paid with Western Union and US cash only.
Until we were forced into accepting PP.

After checking my invoice for the month, I found I was being charged for a seller manager pro subscription as well as a terapeak subscription. But those come free with my premium store subscription. ''customer service'' was able to add a credit onto my account to cover those charges, but I would be surprised if I was the only one this happened to. Check your invoice for ''Subscription Fees'' and make sure it isn't higher than usual!

About that shipping bug: it's not just you: It started about a week ago. If you select ''1lb. or less'' as the weight and leave the oz. field blank, eBay will insert '16 oz' into  the oz. field for you, and if you edit that listing for any reason, then you must delete the '16 oz' and make it blank again (or put a number less than 16 in there). If you leave it blank, then eBay will put a 16 in there so you can get the error all over again next time you edit it.
Any body ever been successful at reporting a bug to eBay where somebody gets back to you with a thank you and a word that it's been reported to the programming department? Not me. I gave up on doing that years ago.

@toolguy regarding shipping using eBay's interface,

Why not try Pirate Ship? It integrates with eBay, it is easier to use, they do the notifications, no bugs, AND you just might save some money with cubic rates!

@billslistings

While your previous comment about the perceived hypersensitivity concerning online security protocols, managed payments, and PayPal refer to events that are presently occurring, your ''red herring'' response discusses what payment methods were utilized in the  distant past.

Simply put, your statement regarding the need to provide current bank information to PayPal is inaccurate.

TO: Vigilant Eye On Ebay
Anyone who is using MP would have to had agreed to their Terms of Use. And, therefore, willingly or unwittingly, has agreed to grant paywithmybank "limited power of attorney" re: your bank acct. And they can do ANYTHING that you can do... In fact, they can act as YOU!  See the Terms of Use Agreement and check out #3 and especially #5. Also 12 & 15 are interesting, because it basically relieves them of any and all responsibility should there be a problem of ANY kind!  Gives them the right to screw anything up, give your computer a virus... you name it... and YOU CANNOT hold them responsible.

I have since read Etsy Payments terms of use, and the document is NOTHING like eBay's. It's CLEAR as can be, extremely thorough and doesn't require you to give up your first born child!

Just letting you know.

Today a seller told me eBay acknowledged the billing glitch and credited their account. You can learn more in today's Newsflash article (I've added a link above).

@Anjie234

Which is why, after 21+ years on eBay, I am ending my sales there.

There is no compelling reason for me consider another payment processor.

Although I once accepted customer credit card payments through commercial bank accounts and merchant agreements with all of the major credit card companies, since its inception, there has been nary an issue with a customer payment or a PayPal disbursement.

Over the years, always won by me, PayPal has provided unconstrained assistance with customer disputes.

Obsessively security conscious, the credit union that I do business with does not permit online access to accounts from devices and ISPs that have not been previously registered by the account holder.

Furthermore, a multiple step login procedure is used.

The only way that funds can be to credited or debited by firms that have been previously authorized to do so is by an account holder is through a bank initiated ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfer.

Contained in the credit union's user agreements are policies that forbid online and ATM customers from providing user credentials and/or passwords to anyone who is not listed on a joint account holder's registration form.

As this particular credit union will not accept or process disputes that are related to power of attorney agreements that have been externally agreed upon by account holders, the owner of an account assumes all of the liabilities and risks that come with the signing of such a document.
