One growing area of concern among sellers is the process of setting up their Managed Payments accounts, without which sellers soon won't be able to transact on eBay.
The clock is ticking - eBay will mandate the use of Managed Payments for many sellers on or around July 20th, just 2 weeks away.
Some sellers are particularly worried eBay may be fumbling the ball when it comes to their bank account information, which is necessary in order for them to receive disbursements.
Sellers discussed the issue on the July 1st eBay Weekly Chat session. Excerpts of questions asked by three sellers include the following:
"My biz checking has been verified - but in my Seller Hub on the Payments Tab there is just a mere vague statement that says "we'll notify you in Late July when we're ready for you". Do you have a more accurate ETA for MP to kick in?
"I am waiting for my banking to get verified for Managed Payments. I am a little concerned because they have already responded using a wrong name for my bank. How detailed is their usual response when there is an issue? What happens to me, the seller, if they don't listen and can't get it straight?"
"I registered for MP a few weeks ago. Last week I got a request saying my bank information needed to be verified. Okay. So I uploaded a printed form from my bank for setting up direct deposit. It has my name (identical to my registered name on eBay), the bank name, account type (checking), account #, routing #, bank address, and a copy of a voided check. Now 5 days later, I'm back at square one with the red message at the top of my pages saying I need to verify my bank information but with no feedback as to what the problem is or what else I might need. I uploaded the same form again hoping that it will get approved this time. If it doesn't, I don't know what other information to give."
eBay moderators responding to such concerns suggested sellers reach out to the eBay payments team, which they can do by visiting the
Managed Payments page on eBay and selecting "Have us call you."
During the weekly chat, a Canadian seller also asked about the ability to provide a US bank for eBay.com transactions to avoid currency exchange fees.
A moderator said that while things may change in the future, at present, Canadian sellers could list on both .com and .ca but eBay would deposit all funds into their Canadian bank account. He confirmed there is a fee for currency exchange, and added, "I can't speak to what may change in the future, but can confirm that it is a priority for us to allow Canadian sellers to receive USD and CAD through the same account."
He said in order to sell on eBay.com, a seller would have to have a US government-issued identifier such as a Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number (TIN). "That said, a CA citizen could potentially sell on eBay.com if they have a business that is registered to operate in the US," he added.
Sellers who rely on eBay sales must use their own judgement in determining when to sign up for Managed Payment if they haven't already.
