eBay Is Performing Significantly Better than Expected

eBay issued a press release stating its business is performing significantly better than the expectations it shared with investors in its April 29th earnings release.

eBay said strength in global gross merchandise volume (GMV) it had seen in April continued through May.

What's remarkable: it now expects GMV growth of between 23% and 26% for the second quarter. That's after years of stagnant growth rates - in fact, in the fourth quarter of 2019, GMV was down 4% fx-neutral. (Does anyone remember the last time eBay had double-digit GMV growth?)

It's interesting eBay didn't mention the surge in online shopping due to the pandemic as contributing to strong sales when it wrote the following:

"All major verticals are accelerating significantly compared to previous quarters, including Home & Garden, Electronics, Fashion, Auto Parts and Collectibles.

"Demand strength is driven by increased organic traffic, better marketing efficiency, and higher platform conversion."

What do you think is behind the strong growth, and are you seeing stronger sales? Take a look at the eBay press release, and let us know - be sure to indicate what types of products you're selling and any other factors you think are relevant.

I am surprised that no one recognizes why?  Its the FREE 50,000 listings.  If Ebay provided this all year round their sales would be higher than expected.  Just like the good old days when they constantly ran promos.

Only eBay store owners receive the additional 50,000 free fixed price listings per month through July.

Sellers without stores receive 200 additional free auction-style or fixed priced listings per month through July.

In both cases, the free listings were not automatically allocated and sellers had to opt into the initial offers.

Store owners could opt into both the 50,000 and 200 additional free listings per month offers.

Meh...I wouldn't get too excited over 25% growth.  My guess is Amazon saw at least double any growth ebay did, and any growth ebay saw was because customers couldn't get what they wanted on Amazon.  I know we bought a lot of stuff like toner on ebay because Amazon couldn't ship for two weeks or more.

Our website saw 400% growth, our Amazon sales tripled.

Ebay might have doubled, but we couldn't keep up with the growth on our website so kicked ebay to the curb almost immediately.  Cut Amazon way back after a month too.

Ebay may have seen growth but I think with the additional 5,000 free listings flooding the site for everyone with a store - many of us have seen a drop in sales. What I have seen an increase of is cancellation requests after payment, offers accepted and no payment, and return requests because a buyer does not read the listing. These have more than tripled in the past 2 months and are all included in Ebays GMV.
