eBay Is Performing Significantly Better than Expected

By: Ina Steiner

eBay issued a press release stating its business is performing significantly better than the expectations it shared with investors in its April 29th earnings release.

eBay said strength in global gross merchandise volume (GMV) it had seen in April continued through May.

What's remarkable: it now expects GMV growth of between 23% and 26% for the second quarter. That's after years of stagnant growth rates - in fact, in the fourth quarter of 2019, GMV was down 4% fx-neutral. (Does anyone remember the last time eBay had double-digit GMV growth?)

It's interesting eBay didn't mention the surge in online shopping due to the pandemic as contributing to strong sales when it wrote the following:

"All major verticals are accelerating significantly compared to previous quarters, including Home & Garden, Electronics, Fashion, Auto Parts and Collectibles.

"Demand strength is driven by increased organic traffic, better marketing efficiency, and higher platform conversion."

What do you think is behind the strong growth, and are you seeing stronger sales? Take a look at the eBay press release, and let us know - be sure to indicate what types of products you're selling and any other factors you think are relevant.

"Can I buy stuff on eBay with money in my managed payments account?"  That is not a feature of the program as of now.  Maybe someday in the future, who knows.

@toolguy "Price gouging was a very small amount of the sales"

LOL you are ignorant! Amazon was getting a major bulk of the "covid" sales, not eBay. All the reports were that Amazon and others were getting these sales. There was no mention of eBay. Smoke and mirrors as always. Just like their ridiculously overpriced stock. What a con job going on there.

How about you (or anyone else reading) do a sold item search for any kind of disinfectant product, masks, wipes, sprays, hand sanitizers, nitrile gloves, anything and everything you can come up with, every different brand you can think of. You'll see thousands of sales for everything with outrageous prices. These items are still being listed and sold while eBay continues to claim they're removing them. What absolute frauds they are.

The evidence is there for anyone to see. Yep, they surely "banned" all this stuff on March 5th didn't they? No, they did nothing! You know why? Greed. They're swimming in $ by allowing it and that's why they did nothing. Better earnings report. More fake stock gains. That's what it all about with this company.

Who is going to have the balls to call them out on this and do a proper investigation of these crooks? Anyone?

"GMV =  Gross merchandise value is the total value of merchandise SOLD over a given period of time"...and INCLUDES shipping cost.
No matter if I sell a $9 item and charge $10.75 shipping, or charge $2.80 shipping...or give FREE shipping.
It's ALL the same to ebay, and gets thrown into the same "look what WE did" pot.

One other thing I didn't mention, most "removals" are after the item already sold, not before. That's a fact. You wonder why? Because eBay then keeps the fees from the sale while removing the item from view of the seller and buyer. Then they can claim with their holier-than-thou attitude that they removed something and then level punishement against sellers (which they love). But removals are rare. Many sellers have sold hundreds/thousands of items and nothing ever done. There is no company more two-faced and crooked than eBay. And that encompasses everything they do, not just this issue.

Off Topic

The USPS really mad me upset yesterday.

I have 2 packages out for the carrier

It's 6pm and he's running a little late, my wife says she hears him out front.

I walk to our front door and still on the porch are our 2 packages, I see he is still next door so I yell at him. HEY!

You didn't pick up our packages, he tells me his supervisor said to NOT pick up any packages if your running late. ME??????

I can't operate not knowing if they'll pick up the mail or not, so I guess it's a trip to the PO everyday until early next year when I can slow down the eBay to almost nothing. . . .20 years of FULL time selling, I think I'm done!

Toolguy said, "20 years of FULL time selling, I think I'm done!"

Sorry to hear that Toolguy.

That said, as a fellow ECB reader I noticed you've again replied in this thread, which is about eBay's performance, with "off topic" posts about your USPS problems, your eBay forum problems, and your managed payments problems, again posting irrelevant and immaterial noise that has nothing at all to do with the actual subject at hand (as you so often do).

There have been several recent blog posts on those subjects you mentioned.

Can you not even be bothered to at least have the courtesy to post in a relevant blog post (even if you somehow insist on making it all about yourself, as you are wont to do?)

~~~~~~~~~
On the takedowns, absolutely correct that there were likely $10's of millions of so-called 'banned' items (masks and sanitizer) that were cancelled after the fact, leading suspicion that, at minimum, EBAY turned a fire-hose onto GMV for stuff that wasn't actually 'sold', and possibly is playing revenue recognition games as well.
From what we've gleaned form you, you're roughly 64, and are about to go on SS.
Without knowing your credit score, it's hard to imagine for us in your age group why you DON'T have a CC.
Just think...you could have made a short term cash advance, bought ebay at $28, and sold for $48.
@ebayout   "Without knowing your credit score, it's hard to imagine for us in your age group why you DON'T have a CC."
I have two older sister in late 60's that never had a credit card.
I have one that I might use once a year, but prefer cash or check payments.
I have 4 friends that don't own credit cards.
I look at it as not a real necessity but "my grouping" believe to earn money before you purchase the item you want.
I am one that will be leaving eBay July 13/14th.
Most of my items are on eBid and I am getting people to start visiting that site.
I also thought that financials should have notes with references to calculations/ events and such that affects their income/ balance sheet.  There should be a note about the covid 19.
Why is a note regarding Covid19 so important to some for Ebay to say on their financial reports?  Just trying to understand why this has anything to do with financial reporting?
It's a chronic issue. Toolguy *frequently* posts irrelevant comments (as in this thread). No one's picking nits over occasional off-topic or snarky comments.
It's simply an ask from a fellow reader - we're all aware there's wide latitude for expression here. It's up to Toolguy to decide.
More to the point, as mentioned, there have been several recent ECB blog posts on payments and USPS that would be much more appropriate topical points than posting in this thread.
Good talk.
(Back on topic)
Marie said, "GMV =  Gross merchandise value is the total value of merchandise SOLD over a given period of time.  So all those extra listings Ebay has given out for free recently only matters if they actually become a sale."
Unfortunately it's not quite that simple. It's tough to pin-down EBAY on GMV.
Ebay's version of "GMV" (in eBay-land the "V" is for Gross Merchandise *Volume*, not value) described as "Total value of all successfully closed transactions between users on our Marketplace...regardless of whether the buyer and seller actually consummated the transaction."
eBay's definition (or more precisely, the calculation) of GMV is opaque.
There are some dodgy behaviors that EBAY likely factors into GMV (but EBAY refuses to clearly disclose).
For example, at the end of March eBay announced that, "We have removed or blocked more than 15 million listings that are in violation of our policy related to COVID-19."
It seems reasonable that eBay *should* exclude those 15 million listings from GMV calculus. Same with the current volume of orders eBay is cancelling due to compromised accounts.
I'd love to be in a position to not need a credit card.  Alas, not likely to happen for at least a few years.
Also wanted to echo that eBay shouldn't pat itself on the back too hard for simply lucking into an increase from a pandemic that changed shopping patterns in the short term.
@unsuck There's zero chance eBay removed anywhere near 15 million listings even to this day. They made it up because it can't be proven. It's a PR move. Lies. They did next to nothing.
GMV is what I stated it was as that is the generally accepted terminology for that acronym in the accounting and financial world.
You may take exception with that, but that doesn't change what I previously said.  what you describe as the way that Ebay calculates this number would be the same way similar sites would calculate this number as well.  It isn't "Ebay's definition" it is simply the definition.
Blocking or removing listings isn't the same thing as sales.  Just because a listing got removed does not mean there was a sale associated with that listing.  So I don't follow your logic.
