eBay Appoints New CEO, Will It Lead to Amazonification?

eBay has a new CEO, former eBay executive Jamie Iannone, who is currently Chief Operating Officer of Walmart eCommerce.

After Devin Wenig abruptly left eBay in September, the board of directors had named Chief Financial Officer Scott Schenkel to fill the role of chief executive on an interim basis.

eBay's board was pressured to name an external candidate by activist investor Starboard Value LP, which informed eBay last month that it felt the board was moving too slowly to fill the role of CEO.

As we wrote last month, Schenkel did not appear to have the confidence of Starboard. It urged eBay to focus on external candidates who would "bring a fresh perspective and energy to the Company after its prolonged underperformance."

In today's announcement, Chairman of the eBay board Thomas Tierney wrote:

"The Board believes Jamie is the ideal CEO to lead eBay's next chapter of growth and success. We have all been impressed by his strong track record of innovation, execution, operational excellence, and developing teams that drive results. Jamie has consistently delivered high growth during rapid periods of industry disruption, consumer change and technological advancement. He is a world-class leader, and we are excited to welcome him back to eBay."

Iannone had worked at eBay from 2001 through 2009, when he left to run digital products at bookseller chain Barnes & Noble.

As his bio on the Walmart site states, he had run various divisions during his tenure at eBay including global search, buyer experience and tailored shopping experience and had previously worked at Epinions.com, Microsoft, and Booz Allen Hamilton.

Activist investor Starboard had also called last month for eBay to name four executives to its board of directors, including two former eBay executives, Stephanie Tilenius and Shannon (Stubo) Brayton.

Both Iannone and Tilenius were at eBay when John Donahoe took over as CEO from Meg Whitman and led the company into new directions that antagonized many longtime sellers on the marketplace. This June 2008 AuctionBytes blog post may be interesting to those looking for insight into the backgrounds of those executives and the the concept of the "Amazonification" of eBay.

Iannone's start date as eBay CEO is April 27, 2020. Scott Schenkel will continue as interim CEO until that date and "will thereafter work with Mr. Iannone to ensure a smooth transition of leadership," eBay stated. Andy Cring will continue to serve as interim CFO. Tierney noted eBay's deep appreciation to Schenkel in the announcement.

We're interested to hear what sellers think of eBay's choice of new CEO. Will he be focused on the "Amazonification" of eBay? How does the news bode for sellers of unique inventory?

@ stage_won I think you hit the proverbial nail on the head...."The acting ebay CEO and BOD didn't want a true outsider because they have much to hide"

Honestly, if the new CEO was a walmart exec he and Jeff Bezos probably oversaw the fulfillment of more ebay orders then either of the last two CEO's of ebay, considering they have been fulfilling most of ebay's orders since 2008. JD and DW served up ebay on a platter.

I guess ebay was randomly covering up shelves the last time he was there.
So...he has no reason to ask why this time around.

I do not expect  much to change truthfully. but at least his track record includes many years under the old regime Donohoe and Wenig took over.  I am hoping that he originally left due to the lack of leadership that Donohoe and the others were dishing out and that hopefully he has enough time there to undo the problems caused by the former CEO's as well as the BOD.

His first quarter will end on June 30 so I think a lot of what we see during this quarter as well as the Summer Quarter will give us a lot of insight as to what direction they are headed.  The BOD was basically forced  to make this move or risk  a larger shareholder  revolt than they already have on their hands.

I think this move was made to appease the rebel shareholders who wanted an outside CEO so they did, but I am sure their is more history to why he left in the first place.  So the next 180  days are going to be very interesting and revealing just what true agreement was struck between the overall useless BOD.and the new CEO,  this was basically another BOO cover their rear ends move as they now have a scapegoat if he makes any changes that are not already on the BOD agenda.  I am sure that the BOD already have a pretty good idea of what the first quarter is going to reveal and felt like they needed another layer between them and angry shareholders.  His first week as CEO and he is the one that is going to have to put a spin on it and also sell how he is going to fix things.

Instead of bringing in new blood, someone with vision, new ideas and excitement. ebay went to the used car lot to recycle a former employee...again.

True, he was there before JD began his reign of terror but under Schmeckle's tutelage, Lannone will assimilate into ebay's greedy and copy-cat culture in no time.

Expecting more of the same or worse.

It seems by looking at all of the "Helpful" posts that they started the boards back to zero!

It's a FRESH start, but I have been "ordered" by my better half to stay OFF of them!

I am so tempted to post, I see a lot of old friends and foe's there!

I was going to say - it was either a glitch or they feel they didn't have enough cheerleaders for what's coming down the pike. There are plenty of outside discussion groups and boards if you play nice. Actually the Ebay boards are a ghost of their former self. You can still sign out of Ebay and view them but gone are the days that threads rolled off the first page within an hour due to so much activity - now threads are on the 1st page forever and it's the same old people responding or arguing or schooling the others - so people leave.

Another inept crony hire by the board and investors purely aimed at being able to continue their leeching and stock pumping of ebay. Remember Wells Fargo? Same playbook happening here. May you all rot in hell.

What a joke that Ebay will ever come even close to a Amazon chances r they will not make it through the next year or two. The only way they they have ever made it is stealing from the sellers and for the last 10 years ridding the stock market bubble.Devin Wenig was great at stealing from the sellers because he lacks integrity. I was surprised they finally fired his butt for he was the boards "boy" aka stooge. Bet he will b out of work for a long time in the "new economy". I guess his pay doing the gig at GM might keep him afloat. Firing his was great for seller morale but once sellers leave Ebay they will not come back.
The "new" CEO is just another POS coming back to Ebay. Another stooge for the board.
Ebay is a snake pit and always will b. If the buyers r not conning the sellers Ebay and Paypal r. Dan Schulman  with PayPal is just anther POS ripping off the sellers. The Feds r always coming after PayPal and the business dealing with PayPal for the PPP loans r going to get scammed.
Yes I admit that there a lot of sellers that r scam artist i buy a lot of merchandise that after a few months is goes in the trash but I also get a lot of juicy deals its a game of plus and minus. The sellers that advertiser Best Buy on items selling for hundreds and only discount $1 - $2 really piss me off and I but from another seller.
I would love to have someone set up another web site similar to Ebay and do it in a honest way and let Ebay fall on its corrupt tail.  Buyers and seller would flock.
When I mention Ebay most people r shocked it is still in business and so am I.
This CEO returning to Ebay is just putting the same fox back in the hen house.
Ebay being a Amazon  - roflmao!!!!!
Ebay R.I.P. as the new economy swallows u up!!!!!

They already have Amazon. We need them to bring back original Ebay. Fix their search engine so that a seller's items are actually seen 24/7, and not restricted to a few minutes a day or to one state or only shown where the buyer pays the most postage so they can eke out a few more pennies on that sale. Ebay needs to realize that until they make their sellers successful, they will not be successful.

>>The Board believes Jamie is the ideal CEO to lead eBay's next chapter of growth and success. <<

Okay I am punchy as I finished all my taxes and ended up with a whole bunch of orders and didn't get out of the office till 1 AM. But doesn't the phrase 'next chapter of growth and success' make anyone else want to a laugh out loud? I ask what growth and what success. I apparently left eBay right before this guy. Many eBayers look back fondly on the Meg years. I don't. I remember one experiment that they did that was a rousing success as far as sellers with stores were concerned. They put the stores inventory into search and in those 6 weeks I sold more than I ever had before or since, until this year as my sales are high due to the pandemic. I didn't know a single store seller that wasn't making great sales. At the end of those six weeks, they pulled the plug on the program without warning and said that buyers didn't like it. Like really? They were buying like crazy. But apparently the numbers weren't showing what Meg and her gang expected and wanted and rather than let the sales continue, they stopped it. My sales never recovered and I could see each month they got lower and lower until January 2009, my eBay bill was more than my profits. I closed shop and moved bag and boxes over to eCRATER and have never looked back. Several years later, Google started messing around with their search engine and instead of being a pure search engine they wanted to make oodles of money, and the changes they made over the next few years, caused great damage to eCRATER, although this pandemic has lifted up my sales there as well as at Amazon.

My point is, I can't remember the last time that I could think of eBay as growing or being successful. At this point it has been well over a decade at least which is really a long time for internet selling. So I wonder what this guy really thinks he will accomplish. Since eBay hates to go backwards to things that worked, he is going to have a lot of difficulty if he tried to bring back the things that worked last time he was at eBay. Otherwise what is he going to try? Haven't they tried everything already? Oh yeah, they haven't tried this. Listening to their customers, the sellers, as to what they need to be successful. If your sellers are successful then eBay will be to, but leadership doesn't understand that concept apparently.
