eBay Marketing Pullback Causes Q1 Sales Drop

By: Ina Steiner

Incredibly, eBay's top executives admitted they had expected the sales drop that the eBay Marketplace experienced in the first three months of 2019, saying it was caused by a significant reduction in marketing, primarily in North America.

And despite the decline in dollar sales for its sellers - even as many paid more for visibility - eBay itself experienced a 4% increase in revenue (on a foreign-currency neutral basis) thanks to seller fees.

Here's how sellers fared in the first quarter in the aggregate:

- US GMV (the value of items sold on its marketplace) dropped 6% in the first quarter, year-over-year.

- Total GMV was down 4% - a decline of 1% taking into account the impact of foreign exchange.

eBay CEO Devin Wenig explained to Wall Street analysts on Tuesday's earnings conference call that its own revenue growth was partly driven by Promoted Listings - sellers were "flocking" to Promoted Listings, he said.

"In Q1, we had more than $800,000 active sellers promote over 200 million listings. This helped drive over $65 million of revenue this quarter, up nearly a 110%."

While that's a win for eBay, it's the result of sellers having to compete more fiercely for sales, finding themselves having to sacrifice profit margin by paying for visibility through Promoted Listing ads.

Wenig said, "We entered the year with the intention to reduce low-ROI marketing spend while maintaining the focus on driving positive buyer growth with new product experiences and targeted marketing. In Q1, that's exactly what we did.

"We removed a significant amount of promotional spend that tended to subsidize higher priced items at low ROI. The impact of this change was lower GMV, driven by lower average price, but steady sold-item growth." (ROI is return on investment.)

(Presentation slides show eBay sold-item growth was again 0%, for the fourth consecutive quarter; steady indeed.)

Wenig and his colleague, Chief Financial Officer Scott Schenkel, did not get into the specifics of eBay's marketing strategy during the call with analysts, but one thing jumps out to eBay observers. Throughout 2018, eBay ran sitewide "flash sales," in effect paying shoppers to buy items on eBay. It abandoned that strategy in 2019.

Both Wenig and Schenkel characterized the change in marketing expenditure as a "significant reduction."

For sellers expecting change, brace yourself: Wenig said the "GMV to Revenue gap" would continue. In other words, eBay will make more money from sellers for each dollar of sales. Basic math means that will make eBay increasingly less profitable for sellers.

eBay didn't mention the new Good Til Cancelled (GTC) mandate, nor did it receive any questions about it during the call. It's not clear if the company had signaled to analysts the topic was off limits, or if analysts don't consider it material to eBay's financial performance.

eBay did raise the issue of Managed Payments. Wenig said he was "delighted" with eBay's progress in taking over payment processing and announced it is expanding the program to Germany.

He also mentioned that eBay had begun the review of its portfolio as mandated by activist investors unhappy with eBay's performance.

Thankfully the talk of a "turnaround" at eBay finally seems to be put to bed, a holdover from former eBay CEO John Donahoe days. The new metaphor is "train tracks" that eBay has been "laying down."

A new catch-phrase is "aspect coverage." eBay had told sellers with the Early 2019 Seller Update, "You will be able to optimize your listings for product-based shopping by simply providing complete and accurate item specifics when you list," as opposed to having to match their product to eBay's catalog/

Here is Wenig's explanation to analysts:

"We said a couple of quarters ago that what we would do is effectively bifurcate the experience that new users who are getting more of the structured data product-based experience, and existing users were being landed more on the historical experience. That's what we've done. And one of the reasons we've been able to maintain healthy buyer growth is, with this significant reduction of marketing, is that we are seeing great conversion gains for new customers. That gives us a lot of confidence for the future.

"In the Core, we're also seeing the impact now that the evolution of structured data is making; this year we'll be very focused on aspect coverage, meaning knowing the product is important, but knowing the attributes of the product in many ways is even more important. And we'll be encouraging sellers to contribute a great degree of richness to their listings because we know that that richness improves our catalog and drives buyer conversion.

"So, I kind of hinted at that in my remarks, but you'll see a significant expansion of the coverage and quality of our catalog this year, and the early signs are very positive on conversion, so that's where we're going to focus.

"But for new users, we've been even more aggressive about product-based experiences, and that continues, and we're real happy with the results there."

It does seem a bit cheeky to be bragging about your success in highway robbery.
All it seems they've managed to do is extract more cash from the passengers on this stagecoach to hell.
Oh well, at least we all know what sort of necktie a highwayman eventually gets to wear.

Pay attention:
"eBay itself experienced a 4% increase in revenue (on a foreign-currency neutral basis) thanks to seller fees." (I know this for a fact, having 4% penalty fees put on my sales because of below standard selling).
"US GMV (the value of items sold on its marketplace) dropped 6%".  In other words,  a lot of cheap stuff (from China and flea market sellers).
"growth was partly driven by Promoted Listings - sellers were "flocking" to Promoted Listings, he said."  Not for long, when they see how they're being fleeced!

OBTW, I tried to close my EB account and was told by CSR that I could NOT close my account because it's below selling standard.  That's like going to the bank and trying to close my account and told I can't because I have $1 on deposit.

@RK: For what I sell there are other sites and those are starting to really grow as Sellers are getting tired of Ebay.
I'm getting sales from Amz, even for "new" clothing.  I sold my first new w/tags blazer yesterday....SHOCKED!  Thank you Amazon.  Items get "seen" on AMZ.  Bezos knows 1/2 his company succeeds because of sellers and marketplace.  He needs sellers.  AMZ and WM are competing trying to get more vendors.  NOT Ebay.  They kick us to the curb.

Just for fun, I put 20 DVDs and CDs (popular titles) and 5 board games on 1-cent auctions (all items were new). Only half received bids. 13 of them did not sell even though they were listed at 1-cent with free shipping. I was testing my visibility and the strength of Ebay... I will be off of ebay within the next few months, putting all my online efforts into Amazon (where I sell hundreds of items a month) and my own website as well as social media advertising (I started selling on ebay in 1998). Ebay continues to fail sellers on every front.

Cutting back on outside advertising while gleefully watching the feeding frenzy of sellers fighting in the same body of water for the same few scraps thrown their way, scraps that they paid more for in promoted listings.

This is absolutely disgusting on two levels.
First, on eBay’s part for creating the shark tank and secondly, on the sellers who contribute to the feeding frenzy.

Wake up you-tubers and desperate sellers as you are feeding the problem by paying for promoted listings as one more tool that “you must use to get sales” on eBay. By example, you send a message that you must jump through “all” of the eBay hoops. How high are you willing to jump?

Ultimately, everyone will have to pay even more as all fees continue to increase. Store fees will increase, selling fees will increase. Fees on increased postage will increase. And, higher promoted % will have to be offered up to the eBay gods in hopes of being seen on page 1 and not page 1001. It’s a vicious feeding frenzy.

Over a decade ago, I could honestly say, “If you feed the beast, it will feed you.” Things have changed. Sales continue to drop. eBay is laughing at sellers dependence and ignorance.

eBay needs to shut down for a major overhaul. It is completely obsolete compared to today’s other selling venues, Diversify people. It’s our only hope.

Yesterday I went into discovery mode.  I hadn't had a sale in 4 days which is very RARE for me after 20 years of selling. I decided to test a promoted listing. Now I had tried them before and the never worked when it first came out.

I I used a $29.95 item - previously it "suggested" 10% - yesterday it suggested 16.9% - are you kidding me? this is how eBay is going to increase revenue? I had my friend across the country try searching for some of my items. She got -0-. Really? I have 600 listed. This is strong arm mob mentality tactics plain and simple.
Even the buyers have left now - what the heck am I doing here still? Off to got work harder on my own website where I'm up to 2700 items so far. My items are not a necessity of life - I'm not selling the cure for cancer so I have to compete with the stinking chinese that ebay loves so much. How their making any money is beyond my comprehension. Selling items for $.99 with free shipping.  How much of that will the public keep absorbing before their totally bored?

Growth my arse

I consider myself to be an EXPERT on eBay search.

If it's on eBay I can find it. . . .

What do you think you have listed that is hidden?

Bidonmine..With your experience.. you are not alone

Been on eBay 15 years, 100 % FB. Topseller..
I stopped buying inventory on eBay for 1 year ago.

Here was the following exception
Seller listed 65 good quality items start $ 0.10 and very low shipping.
I placed bid $ 0.10 on 27 items and won all, I was the only bidder.

When I opened the received parcel it contains all 65 eBay listed items.
The seller informed I was the only bidder and the extra 38 items was free..
I compensated him for his extraordinary super service, but a similar terrible situation occur for many sellers.

It would be interesting if data was available such as how many eBay sellers has left,
and downgraded/closed Stores.

For me sales are down 33% from prior 12 month period.  Prior 12 month period was down 17%.  My average transaction price is down 25% from last 12 month period.    Total eBay fees  last month went up about 25%  from prior month with about the same $ amount in sales.   I promote everything at trending % and they claim 40-50% of the sales are promoted.  Impact of GTC and promoted listings may be the last straw for me.  Oh and don't forget, 2019 returns are forecasted to be up 33% from 2018 if I average monthly from the first 4 months of this year compared to monthly average of last year.  Yikes, time to morph into something else, again.

Our US volume was down 6% year over year.

Our worldwide volume was down 4%

But we found a new way to gut sellers with promoted listings. We hide them to start then charge them to show buyers what should have been shown in the first place.

As such, we're happy to report 65 million in profit from this fraud.

Wenig is nothing but a traveling snake oil salesman. When he reaches down into sellers guts for the last time and discovers there is simply nothing left to cannibalize, only then will the street understand what a POS company this is.

ebay stock currently down 1.13%.

Wenig states: sellers were ''flocking'' to Promoted Listings” he said. BY FORCE! Your products are more likely than not to even be found. I discovered this on my own listings.

Wenig: “This helped drive over $65 million of revenue this quarter”, up nearly a 110%. He should be ashamed to admit to his stock holders that it was ONLY that he was taking more money out of the seller’s pocket. I believe they do not have enough buyers, well with any money.

Managed Payments. Wenig said he was ''delighted'' with eBay's progress in taking over. . . I can only imagine and with experience it’s not good.

It’s time to run. It makes their other half of the big market places look very attractive. You either promote or do not get a chance, I’ve left before and I can smell it in the air. This is going to get really ugly this year, I’m afraid.

Again, eBay is going to be left with the bad sellers that cannot function on their own or the new sellers that do not know the ropes yet.

If I were stock holders, I would be very afraid. Clearly, low amounts of buyers to take more from the sellers to make a profit. I don’t know how I would be excited about having my money invested in a company that is taking undeserved money from the sellers and leaving them broke or bankrupt.

eBay will be giving out more promotions than usual because they want more "inventory" on the site. Even though they own nothing they say it's their inventory. First, this gets more listings on the site that they can plaster ads all over everything trying to get ad-click revenue. Second, more listings means more sellers will forget to end the GTC listings before they relist after 30 days, or some sellers will still be unaware of this scam. Then they'll count on sellers opting into Promoted Listings as well so the few items that get sold eBay takes extra $. There's a reason for everything eBay does, and it's always a scheme for themselves to benefit because they count on seller stupidity. Sellers need to wake up and stop being scammed by their "selling partner"!

@toolguy not many buyers are willing to spend time searching for items, nor are they "experts" at searching - if they don't find what they want easily they move on - and ebay has jacked the search engine to the point that buyers aren't finding what they want and they are moving on..
