Some sellers became concerned last week about a new message Etsy began displaying regarding shoppers' "carbon footprint" on Item pages last week, as we reported on Tuesday.
On Friday, Etsy confirmed it was a test, and it referred to the message as a "local shipping badge." Etsy thanked sellers for their feedback and said the feature was working:
"We've seen that this badge can motivate buyers to purchase. Specifically, we have seen the badge increase the rate at which buyers add items to cart and complete orders."
The new message that sometimes appears on Etsy item pages states, "Ships from (state redacted)! Shorter shipping distances are kinder to the planet. Ordering items closer to you is more likely to reduce your purchase's carbon footprint."
Some sellers believed Etsy was advising shoppers to go to a different listing from a seller located closer to them. But other sellers believed it only appeared when the buyer was located in the same state as the seller in an attempt by Etsy to encourage the shopper to purchase the item they were viewing.
Etsy explained on Friday under what conditions buyers would see the message if they were part of the test:
"In this iteration of the test, if a U.S.-based buyer is within approximately 300 miles of or located in the same state as where your shop ships from, we'll show a nudge on the listing page indicating that the order may result in lower carbon emissions. Shipments eligible for the local badge may reduce carbon emissions for two reasons: 1) They reduce the overall distance an item travels from our global baseline, and 2) They're more likely to be shipped with ground services, which is a lower emissions mode of transportation than other options."
Could this badge deter buyers who aren't near me from supporting my shop?
As a global marketplace, we're focused on connecting buyers and sellers from all around the world. Only buyers who are within approximately 300 miles or in the same state as where your shop ships from will see the badge, which might help motivate them to purchase your listing. Buyers who are not near your shop but are looking at your listings will not see any messaging that would discourage them from making a purchase due to your shop's location.
But it missed
a concern some sellers had voiced - that buyers might read it the way the sellers themselves did - as discouraging them from purchasing from the shop. Etsy gave no indication it would consider tweaking the message to be clearer.
