Enlisting an Amazon Employee to Conduct Returns Fraud?

By: Ina Steiner

In a twist on returns fraud, police arrested an employee who worked at an Amazon fulfillment center for alleged theft. According to ABC affiliate WTVC News Channel 9, police in Chattanooga, Tennessee arrested the employee this month.

The Amazon worker allegedly provided a "customer" with an RRMAS, a scan code provided for a return, "without having the items physically returned to the facility."

The news outlet reported that the employee received over $3,000 for his part in the scheme which resulted in an alleged loss to Amazon of $60,000.

Customer returns are bad enough, but returns fraud can be devastating for online sellers. The news story shows just how devious people can get when it comes to scamming online marketplaces and sellers.

It's unclear if police have any leads on the alleged accomplice. According to the story, the worker had received texts from an "unknown individual" and had received payment for allegedly aiding the theft through Bitcoin.

Looks like either Amazon or Amazon loss prevention detected something but I dunno the person who bought the stuff.. The fraud buyer...must know the person. How do you get a refund without initiating a return. They have to tighten up some controls and I just can't see that there were no red flags for those electronic product  purchases that came up on the buyer unless it was a group of them doing it spread out. Organized.

The return policy is to let people steal. Why are they surprised someone stole a bunch?

Returning something that isn’t legitimately defective is stealing. Its entitled and gross. Causing others expense for your benefit.

$60k is too much I guess. He should have sent back bricks and garbage and then it would have been ok.

So the moral of this story is that Amazon only cares about fraud when it's against FBA and once it reaches 5 digits, got it. Because they sure as sh** don't care that I report a minimum of 10 frauds a day for switch out returns, empty box returns, returning junk, etc.

@WalmartClassAction ..... this system doesn't have the Thumbs Up option... so I'm putting it in writing.

I understand that marketplaces have to be tough on sellers to prevent abuse, however most sellers have been around a while and would not risk their reputation to report a bad customer for to save a few dollars.

It has been recommended to Amazon (and ebay) that they maintain a metric for Denied Returns both on a Seller basis as a whole and a SKU basis, and work from there.   It is a wonder as a reseller that MacBook Pros have such a high return rate, and our denial for Not Properly Returned is that they returned a different item entirely.  Sometimes, it's an older laptop (of any brand/model) and others it's a brick.  Usually on very expensive items.   We send images and even HD Security Video of the return being OPENED, along with Scanner Data timestamps of the order#. . . . We win some and lose some with no difference in the videos... Why?

Why?  Because customers are always right and Amazon would not want to lose their customers to another platform.

And with the new PIA rules (2018-19 I think) we can't "OUT" these fraudsters. Further, since WE didn't collect the funds, we can't report them to their credit card companies - and Amazon won't either.  Since the Card Processors are the ultimate data holders, fraud claims should be all be required to be reported to them.....  and laws should regulate what card companies must do after too many fraud complaints are made against them.     With NO consequence of fraud, this will NEVER END.

so, if these marketplaces didnt exist, Amazon could downsize and keep better controls over who is stealing from them.
in the future, im hoping you can either 'google shop' or google a product and it will come up in your search, without being displayed by a marketplace. i have nothing against 'middle men' (being one myself), only when they overvalue themselves and become despotic

I couldn't agree more! We sell similar "stealable" products like you mentioned too. Amazon's own order page basically admits that they are aware they have a fraud problem. 50% of my orders today are marked "signature confirmation recommended." Now is Amazon paying for this signature? No, of course they aren't. This is an admission from Amazon that they know fraud is a problem and their solution is to charge their "partner" $5-$7 an order. We already use Buy Shipping for the supposed "protection" but that does nothing for return's fraud.

How much does Amazon the corporation steal from sellers?  Sellers send inventory into Amazon FBA and is comes up missing, sure, thread after thread on their forums for the last decade, step and repeated over and over.  The company was built on stolen inventory acquired at ZERO cost and at sellers expense.
