Etsy Sellers Grow Leery of Selling $250+ Items

Etsy sellers are increasingly concerned about listing items priced over $250 due to reports that Etsy automatically refunds buyers who file claims. Numerous sellers say they have removed expensive items from the marketplace for fear they'll be out the money and the item.
When controversy erupted last year after Etsy raised seller fees, company executives promised them increased seller protection, as we reported on the AuctionBytes Blog in June.
But sellers have written for the past few months that Etsy is automatically refunding buyers despite proof of delivery or without requiring buyers to return items they report as not as described. In a letter to the editor in October, a seller wrote in part, "Etsy is now automatically refunding customers who open a Not As Described Case. As soon as the case is opened, it is immediately refunded and because the refund is issued immediately, the only way this can be done is by a BOT."
In another letter to the editor from last week, a seller wrote in part, "The Etsy forums report many sellers who have lost their money (sometimes substantial amounts) because Etsy instantly refunds buyers who claim they have not received their goods. The refunds are given immediately, without checking - despite proof of delivery by the carrier and sometimes even if the recipient signed for it!"
We checked in with Cindy Baldassi, an ecommerce consultant for micro businesses (and online seller) who is known as cindylouwho2 on the Etsy discussion boards. She's collecting reports, but said evidence points to Etsy intending to refund orders marked as delivered but stolen by porch pirates.
"I personally would not list an item worth more than $250 on Etsy without having insurance that covers me for this type of loss," Baldassi said. "Of course, most insurance companies won't cover this, and the ones that do definitely require a statement from the buyer, who may have no interest in helping the seller if Etsy already fully refunded the order."
Sometimes sellers can experience problems related to their shipping times. In one thread we read from October, sellers analyzed a shop whose owner had complained they were losing all claims and suggested it might have been due to advertising inaccurate handling times.
Nevertheless, reports persist, such as this thread started on Saturday that generated a lot of discussion. The perception that Etsy is not protecting sales of high priced goods is taking hold. Let us know your experiences and where you feel comfortable selling high-priced goods online. |
