Atrocious. Stupid. Confusing. That's what sellers are saying after they encountered a change in how Etsy displays their listings.
One Etsy seller who wrote to EcommerceBytes explained the change and how they felt it was harmful to sellers, but they were fearful of retribution if we published their letter. Like many of the sellers posting about the issue on and off of Etsy, they said the link Etsy placed in sellers' listings "read full description" is not prominent enough for shoppers to see it.
In a thread on the Reddit discussion boards
, a seller called it worrying. "At first they moved the item description from below the item to the sidebar under a dropdown, which already is worrying because it felt like Etsy was trying to hide the description completely, but they've gone a step further and now hide it behind a button which makes it a pop-up instead of an on-site feature."
The seller advised their colleagues and Etsy buyers to be aware of the change: "Sellers, please be aware that this is happening, and buyers, PLEASE look for that button! The English text for it is "Read full description.""
The post explains why Etsy keeps sellers in the dark about tests it is running: "We know it can be frustrating to be surprised by a change in your shop when you're part of a test, but announcing experiments before they happen can bias the results. If you knew we were testing a new tool in Shop Stats, for example, you might use the tool differently, impacting the results of the experiment."
As a result of Etsy not informing sellers of the change, it's impossible to confirm whether the change to hide descriptions in sellers' listings is a test or if it's the beginning of a sitewide rollout.
When you browse Etsy listings, are you seeing full descriptions, or are you seeing the link to "read full description"? If you do see the change, let us know what you think of it.
