Facebook Launches Its Version of Top Rated Seller Badge

By: Ina Steiner

You've seen them on eBay, and this month they roll out on Etsy. Now Facebook is getting in on the act by rolling out badges that designate sellers as being better than the rest.

Facebook announced this week, "To help buyers make more confident purchases and easily identify shops on Facebook and Instagram, we are testing a new label that identifies shops offering consistent shopping experiences."

On Facebook, they're called "Preferred" Shops, and the "Preferred" label will be displayed automatically for qualifying shops. The criteria Facebook considers:

Preferred shops provide the following for most products:
- Free shipping
- Purchase protection
- Order tracking
- 30-day returns

As of now, at least, the badge will only display for shoppers using the Facebook app for Android or iPhone. The help page doesn't display exactly what the badge will look like. (If you see them in the wild during testing, let us know.)

The Facebook Preferred Shops program mirrors the longstanding eBay Top Rated Seller program and the brand new Etsy Star Seller program.

Let us know what you think of the programs and whether such badges make a difference to you as a buyer or as a seller.

What exactly is Purchase Protection? And why does anyone need 30 days to decide whether or not what they ordered was what they received? It sounds like Facebook now wants to encourage "rentals."

It's uncivilized.
I shop the Normal way.
Look it up on Google,
Then find a Mom & Pop shop.

The problem with these "Mom & Pop" shops, is that with the prices, it looks like they have about 10 kids to feed!

Except now you have to be extra careful as those sites aren't always a real Mom & Pop site.  My husband got burnt just a couple months ago on one of those sites.  That shipping scam that is going on.  Using a tracking number to your general area that shows delivered.  So just be careful is all I'm saying.  Things aren't always what they seem to be.

I don't like Facebook.  period.  When you watch the resellers on Youtube, very few of them do business with FB.

If you thought you had bad service from eBay's team when encountering a problem as a seller, wait till you get the axe while selling on Facebook!  I got blocked from Marketplace last Spring for an unknown reason (only had one thing for sale, which were a lot of video games manuals), and the appeal process is pretty much opaque while there is no direct support nor any possibility to contact anyone directly.  I got reinstated only 5 weeks later after complaining many times on the regular part of the site about something wrong, without ever knowing why I was flagged in the first place...  It's judge, jury and executioner on FB, and you are just a spec of dust for them!

It's time to Stop trashing the Mom and Pop sites.
Absolutely EVERY eCommerce site in America is certified / vetted secure.
If you have a suspicion about a site, look it up on the WHOIS site.
Do your due diligence.
Mom and Pop sites are the best shopping experience compared to those corporate sites from my experience.
They lied when they said Postal Money Orders weren't secure, they lied when they said Mom and Pop sites are a risk. They are not. They lied when they said PayPal out-ranked the credit card company. It does Not.
Fumigate all the lies out of the picture and you have a nice clean, calm shopping experience, to revisit again and again and again.  :o)

I find it unlikely the users of Facebook Marketplace will pay any attention to the label.  Just as EBAY buyers rarely cared about Top Rated Seller.

I sell on Facebook Marketplace all the time.  But only items that people can come pickup at my office.  No shipping.  I save all those items for my EBAY Store...

@Marie - eBay stated money orders, personal checks, wire transfers and any payment method other that PayPal was not safe. Then eBay and PayPal broke up, and suddenly only Mangled Payments is safe. I'm sure eBay thinks that any online marketplace not called eBay is unsafe.

Their market place site is junk and unfriendly, now it shows "ships to" instead of local, why would I care about a yard in another state, I shouldn't have to click a couple times just to see local. No way I would buy and have something shipped to me without any protections

@Marie

I Strongly disagree with your comment about Mom & Pop Shops.
I'm very surprised at your quick assumption to M&P shops.
There are countless complaints about scammers and cheating on ecommerce sites like ebay, amazon, etsy, etc. (Buyers and Sellers alike, and especially management)

I have read many of your defenses for big commerce companies, and yet you cast a wide net in discrediting M&P Shops?
For one (possibly errant) mistake?

Many of the supplies I purchase from M&P are better deals now due to online fee abuses.
As others have said, I would rather cycle my money around to help the economy, than to funnel it towards ignorant and ungrateful executives, who hoard it and never reinvest like communist counterparts.

With all of the defending comments for online commerce giants, I am surprised that One infraction triggers a negative outlook, by you, for independent merchants.
I personally have never encountered this on private seller sites, but I have many times through big online companies.
