Etsy's New TV Commercial Celebrates Creatives

What comes across clearly in Etsy's new television ad is that creative people face challenges but those who persevere find joy in their artistry.

But the goal of Etsy's commercial is not quite as clear. Is it trying to attract sellers of handmade goods to its site, or is it trying to appeal to buyers by showing them they can find handmade goods made creative people?

An Etsy spokesperson said the campaign celebrates makers and recognizes the challenges they must overcome.

"In this new campaign, we celebrate the makers and recognize the challenges they often have to overcome to pursue their passions as creative business owners.

"The commercial shines a spotlight on the path (usually a less popular and less traveled one) many creative artists take - starting at a young age - through adulthood - to become creative business owners. Our stories focus on the commonalities between makers and athletes - their dedication to the craft, the focus on skills and technical precision, and the pursuit of a life-long passion."

Trade publication AdAge said Etsy was leveraging the popularity of the Summer Olympics, which kicks off a week from Friday, without actually being a sponsor of the sporting event. Etsy's commercial "highlights the parallels between professional athletes and craft makers, without actually mentioning the Olympics by name," the publication said.

In an announcement to sellers, Etsy said it was "highlighting seller-inspired stories in a TV ad that will air during the summer games." It also published a post featuring quotes from sellers.

Etsy also encouraged sellers to share their story on social media using the hashtag #GreatnessInTheMaking.

Here's the video, and you can compare it to other commercials on ispot.tv.

While sellers tend to be very picky when critiquing marketplace commercials, they may give Etsy points for advertising at all.

More like etsy exploiting creative people.

They are still just as corporate as the other Amazon wannabe, Thief-bay.
It really is disgusting the way they lie, telling society they're something they are not.

Honestly, I don't buy any of the chintzy junk on Etsy.
It's all junk.
Just so demotivating.
I'm no longer associated with them.
People are learning fast.....
If you want good things made in America : Start your Google search on page 3 or 4.
TONS of American Artists to be found all over the place.
It's very heartening.

Also :
"Creatives" is not the thing.
We are ARTISTS.
There is no replacement term.

And vintage is never mentioned - again. I appreciate artisans but we're on Etsy too.
