Etsy Change Pressures Sellers on Delivery Speed

Some sellers said Etsy is now requiring them to specify estimated delivery times when setting up shipping profiles. They were discussing the issue in a discussion board thread this week titled, "Anyone else getting the feeling Etsy's hyperfocusing on shipping dates?"

Sellers reported that as of this week, Etsy was forcing them to choose estimated delivery times - "they won't let me use saved shipping profiles anymore without doing it," one seller wrote.

"Apparently Etsy has gone into Shop's shipping profiles (?) & decided that if one means of shipping is commonly used, then the Shop "should" be committing to it," a seller described.

For instance, a seller who set up shipping profiles that give them breathing room for various reasons, including the pandemic, said Etsy changed everything to USPS Priority "because 'we seem to use it the most' which is false. I had to change it all back grr."

"As others have stated," wrote another seller, "delivery times are recently required on my shipping profiles."

The seller expressed concern that Etsy wants to compete with Amazon. "This is worries me because Amazon is not a fit for my business. I am hoping Etsy can continue to be. If they will require fast shipping in order to have items show well in their search, it won't be. This worries me."

"Etsy's obsession with 'free' shipping is likely to be expanded to include 'fast' shipping," another seller said, a reference to Etsy's practice of limiting seller exposure in search results unless they offer some form of free shipping. The seller said they believed Etsy was copying Amazon and eBay in their approach to shipping.

But Etsy is different, pointed out a seller who said Etsy displays a message whenever they edit or create a listing that states customers prefer fast shipping and asking if the seller wants to shorten their processing time. "Nearly everything in my shop is made to order and personalized," they wrote. "That's what my customers like about my items and they know it takes time to make their 'especially for them' order."

"Etsy really needs to decide what it is; is it a marketplace for handmade, custom, unique items? Or is it an Amazon knockoff where everything is premade or mass produced," wrote another seller.

One seller appeared willing to give Etsy the benefit of the doubt, speculating that the increased number of new sellers to the platform due to the pandemic, and perhaps because sellers were getting overwhelmed and were shipping items late, had led to Etsy's decision. "I'd have to know the ins and outs of data they collect to understand more of the why," they wrote.

A close follower of the marketplace, CindyLouWho2 (aka CindyLouDoesStats), had predicted in February that Etsy would focus on shipping speed after listening to its Q4 financial presentation. But she wrote in this week's thread that Etsy had not forced her to add delivery ranges in her shipping profiles, "although they are strongly encouraging it."

As noted above, Etsy factors in shipping costs when determining which listings to display in search results, and it may be factoring in handling time and delivery speed as well. This week's move may be an attempt to fine tune its algorithm when it comes to the latter.

We can't help but think of the maxim, "Good, fast, and cheap - pick two."

Let us know what you're seeing and what you think of Etsy's push for speedy delivery and the tactics it's using.

Etsy is finished.
Etsy is a business barnacle.
Etsy is a business carbuncle.
Use Etsy the way they used you.
Google eats Etsy's lunch every day.
TASTY !

Venues have no control, thus no business either estimating or guaranteeing shipping times. Beyond establishing a ship by date, neither does the actual fulfiller.

They can explain, monitor, communicate and track only what their carriers provide and perform.

The majority of claims, transaction ‘defects’, lost manpower to address and adjudicate ‘issues’, and outright fraud that is experienced selling online occurs as a result of venues (or shippers) making shipping promises they have no business making, and thus ‘training’ buyers to be impatient and uncompromising.

Every action taken to pressure sellers into guaranteeing arrival dates is justified by declaring that “customers prefer fast shipping”. Duh. What they overlook though, is that customers do not ‘prefer’ to be over-promised and under served. And that different marketplace segments have differing tolerances for shipping expectations.

If that ever sinks into the Lemming like brains professing to lead 21st century eCommerce who seem to prefer applying mindless formularity to every part of the process, THEN we’ll ALL benefit.

Don’t seem to be seeing any evidence in upcoming announcements, enhancements, or ‘surveys’ any of that is even in their consciousness though...

I remember when selling on eBay was fun.

I remember when selling on Etsy was fun.

Then Etsy was infiltrated by ex-eBay executives.

Both of these venues treat their sellers like children.

Sounds like another ruse to use metrics maybe to imply penalty FVF's
Sound familiar?

I got messages from etsy to shorten my handling times. (3-5 days to 1-3)
I ALWAYS sent shipments next day or same day depending on my timeframe.
I told etsy to shove it because my stores reputation was built on MY EFFORTS ALONE without any help from their boot licking monkeys and their 'suggestions'.

All they are is minions reversing my service as a suggestion back to me as if they were the ones who came up with the idea.
More waste of revenue to sour the marketplace, and try to take credit for my great service.

Corporate idiots need to see the proctologist.
There is major blockage due to their heads being stuffed so far up their stink spot.

All of  these venues want to be Amazon, their CEOs just wish they had Jeff Bezos' pocket change. The problem with that is none of them have the vision of Bezos, none of them are creating their own shipping industry. My last 3 Amazon orders came in an Amazon van, probably from one of the 3 Amazon warehouses within 50 miles of me. Not long in the future some of those packages will come by drone.

When was the last time you had an eBay item delivered in an eBay van? Where are the Etsy vans delivering items? What's that? They don't exist? No eBay Airbus 320s, no Etsy drones? Well why not? If you, as a venue, want to dictate shipping time, you should be the shipper, otherwise you should stay out of it.

People buying on eBay and Etsy, as well as Poshmark, Mercari, Bonanza and others understand they are buying from another person, not some massive corporation. When will the leaders of there venues understand that?

It seems as though all of the Etsy changes go one way- in THEIR direction.  Which is to say, whatever they can do to put more money in their pockets at the expense of the sellers.

I too have gotten hassled by the Etsy bots to change my shipping times, however, they are telling me I should INCREASE the time even though I almost always, like 99% of the time, ship on the SAME DAY.   Really, what the hell is this about?  Why would I set up a profile that says I ship in 4-5 days when I mostly sell in one day?

Somehow, some way, Etsy will profit from this while the sellers lose.

And all this is happening while Etsy has completely transitioned from being a quality vintage and handmade platform to the new Ali Express aka Etsy Express.

Given the horrendous situation in China, where there is literally SLAVE LABOR being advertised, it is truly disgusting for Etsy to encourage people to purchase ANYTHING that is made in CHINA.

Not to mention the Chi Com flu virus that has killed so many people.

Nobody should buy "made in China."

The AMAZON effect has invaded Etsy.  I see a lot of overseas crafters on Etsy and I wonder how this will effect them, because sometimes it takes as much as 2-3 weeks to get something delivered.  And what about the Chinese sellers?  Etsy should differentiate between Domestic sellers & overseas sellers.  Is there a checkoff box for "US only sellers" and overseas sellers, like Ebay does; I have never seen it.

If Etsy wants to succeed they must go back to the original.
Handmade-(not handmade in China or elsewhere).  Vintage items.
No mass produced clothing, pottery etc..
Most important get rid of the google ad that you cannot opt out.  Etsy wants more money-they just claim the extra percentage is because of someone seeing it on google.  How do you possibly run a business without knowing the cost involved??
