UPS Imposes COVID-Related Fees for Volume Shippers

The Feds are scrutinizing companies that raise prices in response to the COVID pandemic, but that isn't stopping UPS from imposing extra fees on packages shipped by retailers sending a higher number than usual due to shoppers who are confined to their homes.

The Wall Street Journal said UPS is adding peak surcharges "for companies that have been inundating its delivery network with many more packages and oversize items during the coronavirus pandemic, an unprecedented move to manage a summer flood of shipments and higher costs."

Among those who will see extra fees, according to the Journal: Amazon and Best Buy. It's uncertain whether retailers will pass along the cost to consumers.

Pundits on Twitter said they expect FedEx to follow UPS's lead and institute peak surcharges too.

According to the UPS bulletin dated Tuesday, May 26, 2020, there will be a 30-cent Peak Surcharge per package sent UPS Ground Residential and UPS SurePost beginning May 31st.

The surcharge applies to customers whose combined volume of Ground Residential and SurePost packages during the prior week exceeded the customer's average weekly volume for February by more than 25,000 packages.

In addition, there will be a $31.45 per package Peak Surcharge for large packages that applies to customers who shipped over 500 Large Packages during the prior week, for all US origins and destinations.

Large Packages are defined as packages with length (longest side of the package) plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeding 130 inches, or with length exceeding 96 inches.

According to the bulletin, the surcharges that take effect on May 31, 2020 will apply "until further notice."

UPS began imposing Peak Surcharges to international shipments in April.

Retailers and online merchants must be wary of raising prices during the pandemic, especially for goods considered essential, as they are under scrutiny from the Department of Justice COVID-19 Hoarding and Price Gouging Task Force. Yet it's clear as the UPS surcharges show retailers are facing higher costs themselves.

Also scrutinizing sellers' pricing are online marketplaces, and some sellers have complained their detection tools have cast too wide a net when searching for possible price-gougers.

Earlier this month, a guild representing Amazon merchants sued the Commonwealth of Kentucky over its price-gouging enforcement practices targeting its members.

UPS, what a bunch of bull....

Is that a new way to price gouge?

You deliver packages, you get more packages, good times for UPS.

Nope, now UPS cry's they got too many packages, and are going to charge more?

Yup, its price gouging.

There has always been different rules for the doers and another set for the peons. The doers are the ones who daily fill entire semis with their out going packages. These doers get even better shipping prices for their chinese junk. So now UPS charges another 1 or 2 percent for covid. I would think that if the peons filled the same semi with chinese junk they would get the same offer. If you don't you are like the guy in the dime store who is purchasing a piece of chinese junk for one dollar and a second for ninty nine cents.

If the Feds can scrutinize UPS, who else?  Because in our city there are reopening companies who are adding surcharges.  Restaurants, Cafes, almost every type of business (justifiably) is adding surcharges.
