Amazon Returns Get Sidelined over Capacity Issues

Two Amazon sellers said some of their returns have been stuck in storage since the fall due to capacity issues at Amazon fulfillment centers.

One seller wrote, "So now because Amazon is too busy, they are allowed to hold onto our inventory for 7-8 months because they are too busy to deal with returns?" and posted the messages they received from Amazon.

The following is an excerpt from one of the emails the seller received from Amazon support:

"After review, due to high return volumes and our fulfillment center be at maximum capacity, the units are being sidelined in a holding area awaiting space. The current timeline for completion or when the items will be available for removal will be 5/10/2020. I apologize for any frustration this may have caused you and your business."

A second seller said they were experiencing the same problem - "We have several SKUs FBA return unable to remove. the earliest one was back to last September." They posted the following message Amazon support had sent them:

"At this time due to availability at the fulfillment center this unit is not able to be processed for removal. At this time based on the response from the FC this unit is not lost. We can also not provide a timeframe as to when this unit will be available for removal. I will be resolving this case now as there is nothing further Seller Support can action on this case."

What must be particularly frustrating is the fact that Amazon may be charging sellers storage fees for inventory that isn't sellable or returnable. An excerpt from a letter Amazon sent the original poster states:

While your inventory is stored in a temporary location:

Your items will not be disposed of (until they are moved into the main fulfillment center).*

*** You will not be able to remove items through Seller Central.

*** You might be charged storage fees for these units. (If you are charged storage fees for units that were in temporary storage, you will be eligible for reimbursement of those fees.)

*** You might receive emails instructing you to remove unsellable units before they are disposed of.

It's unclear how big a problem this is, but for those sellers who are impacted, it's a major issue.

Hmmm....maybe AMZ should offer an option for the seller to have returns returned back to them directly and not holed up in the fulfillment center?

Well, maybe Amazon should see this as an indicator that their returns policy is too easily taken advantage of by the buyers. Since Amazon is dealing with goods that belong to the sellers, they can be free and easy about return. Until, that is, it causes a backlog. And, as always, the seller suffers.

So does this mean you can just buy items "fulfilled by Amazon", then return anything you want and the seller won't even notice until May?

What could possibly go wrong?
