Etsy Surveys Sellers on Ad Program: Changes on the Way?

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy is conducting a survey about its advertising program, explaining in its invitation, "Today we are conducting a research study to help us better understand what is important to our sellers. As part of this study, we'll be asking a number of questions to help us better understand you and your Etsy business."

One seller who received an invitation to the survey today expressed skepticism. "I generally don't participate in surveys by the marketplaces. I almost always feel like "helping them understand what's important to our sellers" is code for mining for information to monetize against me in the near future not help me succeed on their sites."

The survey comes as sellers continue to complain about a radical change to Etsy's ad program it made over the summer. As we noted in this August 27th article, a spokesperson described the new Etsy Ads program as follows:

"Etsy Ads unifies the company's existing tools (Promoted Listings and Google Ads) into one simple, turnkey solution. Sellers can now set one budget, and Etsy will leverage its data insights and marketing expertise to optimize how their dollars are spent across channels."

Many sellers say their budget gets eaten up too quickly with the new Etsy Ads and have expressed a desire to be able to purchase Promoted Listing ads separate from Google Ads, giving them greater control.

As for the reader who informed us of the survey, they added an observation that may resonate with sellers on Etsy and other marketplaces such as eBay as they try to generate more revenue from sellers as sales growth slows:

"As the field gets more and more crowded with sellers and merchandise marketplace corps are meeting their imperative growth mandates by finding new ways to charge for what was once free rather than having to deliver results to their sellers."

If you've taken the survey, feel free to let us know if you think Etsy is on the right track or not, without violating the non-disclosure agreement you were required to accept before taking the survey that prohibits participants from disclosing "any new products, tools, or concepts."

Send a survey to find out what sellers will agree to in advance to get extorted out of, great stuff.

The message sellers should send to these clowns who are cashing in stock options is the very same one we send to eBay, pull your inventory off of their tainted marketplace if they do not expose the items to buyers.

it doesn't matter how much you pay for promoted listings , when in the next sentence , they blackmail you for things like PHONY FREE shipping , or we'll suppress your listing so no one will see them. these people are just a bunch of greedy cons that will destroy anything to rip off a buck.

I felt from the start that it was a scam to get more money out of sellers. They used to have Etsy promoted listings where you bid any amount and I spent 50 cents to $10.00 a day. My return was about $600-$800 per week. Now it’s a $1.00 per bid and I have sold very little. I stopped paying into the “new” promoted listings as the forum of “Etsy is Rolling Out Ads” proved my beliefs.

Etsy can't even manage a decent search - WHY would I entrust them to "leverage their data insights and marketing expertise" to do anything more complicated than walking and chewing gum at the same time.

I have never purchased Etsy promoted listing ads and, now that I have returned to Etsy, don't plan to in the future. I promote independently on Facebook by sharing through pertinent groups and boosted posts. I get more bang for my bucks that way.

GREAT comments above that really nailed Etsy’s frauds and duplicity.

You can spend all the money you want on their phony ads and jump through every hoop, but they still screw you at every turn, AND your listings won’t get found until the robots decide it’s your turn.

Search is now completely screwed up beyond recognition.

How is it that one seller in my handmade category can have 18 listings on the first page and NONE of them are ads??  Why is this person getting preferential treatment when many of her items are NOT handmade by her own admission?

Meanwhile no matter how much I spend on ads the money is eaten up the first hour.

Etsy crooks need to be busted.
