Bloomberg: FTC Listens to Amazon Merchant Woes

By: Ina Steiner

Bloomberg reported today that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is interviewing Amazon third-party merchants as part of a possible (and unconfirmed) antitrust probe.

Cnet noted that the Wall Street Journal had earlier reported that the FTC and Department of Justice were opening up antitrust investigations into big tech companies including Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon.

Among the merchants Bloomberg spoke to was a toy seller, who said 98% of his sales came from Amazon, with platforms such as eBay and Walmart accounting for less than 2% of revenue. "He declined to discuss specifics of his conversation with FTC investigators but said the conversation focused on his Medium article. It argued that Amazon, which faces little competition online, has been raising fees and selling advertising - forcing merchants to raise prices."

The news agency said Amazon declined to comment and pointed to a statement its executive Jeff Wilke had made in June where he stated, "We believe that most substantial entities in the economy deserve scrutiny. Our job is to build the kind of company that passes that scrutiny with flying colors.

I would give Bloomberg the same trust and credence as I would give Wall street.

40% of AMZ sellers are Chinese.  Are they going to interview those folks?

I won't believe any of it until I see the text of the actual suit. No point in speculating.
