Etsy Sellers Buzz about Amazon Handmade Fee Waiver

By: Ina Steiner

Amazon is extending the waiver on the monthly subscription fee required to list on its Amazon Handmade store, and Etsy sellers are buzzing about the move. Some believe it may be because Amazon Handmade isn't doing as well as they would wish. Interestingly, some sellers report they are more receptive to trying Amazon Handmade now, citing changes Etsy has been making to the site.

Note that while some sellers are willing to sell on multiple marketplaces, it can get tricky with unique inventory - sellers must sync their listings so they don't double-sell a single item. That's where listing software can come in handy.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the fee-waiver and referred us to its announcement on this page on Facebook.

The Amazon announcement comes as marketplaces seek more listings in advance of the holiday shopping season. It also comes as craft-supplies retailer A.C. Moore enters the space (Marketplace.acmoore.com).

Let us know what you think of this week's news from Amazon and if it will impact you.

I recall choosing to not use Amazon Handmade due to the fees required.  Now, I might take a second look at that.

I tried Amazon Handmade for several months and ended up dropping it. One problem with being a handmade seller on Amazon is that we (or at least I) don't make the same product thousands of times. Amazon buyers are used to seeing reviews on the product rather than a cumulative feedback page so, from the buyers point of view, you don't have very many sales and very few reviewed products. I think they need to change their feedback system. It's the main reason I left, Also, they had no music category and told me to just list in purses. I just think their system needs work before it's really handmade-friendly.

for me the problem with Amazon Handmade is it's reeeeaaly hard to find hand made jewelry by real artisans. Apparently Amazon thinks that because something is made in china by billions of Chinese prisoners enslaved in a barracks and kept there 30 days at a time without being allowed to go home is classified "handmade"  Have you ever been there and searched for something? There's lots of sellers making really great stuff (check etsy) but for some reason you can't find that stuff on Amazon - every time I search for jewelry handmade I end up leaving with in 5 minutes - cheap chinese crap isn't what I was looking for - wake up Amazon

It is hard to find ''hand made jewelry by real artisans'' on Etsy, too.  Many of the same pieces listed on Amazon are also for sale on Etsy -- the only difference is the Etsy prices are much higher.  These items are listed on Etsy as designed and manufactured in Asia.  The Etsy shop owners do not design or alter them in any way.

The connection between artisan handmade and Etsy is an artifact from the past at this point.  Even though Etsy's corporate officers are still pretending that 75 percent of all items listed on Etsy are both ''handmade'' and ''one of a kind''.  See the interview with Etsy CTO Mike Fisher in FAST COMPANY July 11, 2019.

"F" - let me know how the hell you do list in handmade on Amazon

Just for fun I signed up - got this big CONGRATULATIONS banner then went to list and got absolutely nowhere - can't even find handmade.  I get it that there is a learning curve in anything new for me to utilize but come on now Amazon - you really want to make a go of it? Fix the listing tool. Just saying
