Would You Pay Google to Drive Traffic to Etsy?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Etsy launched a new platform to encourage sellers to advertise not only through its own Promoted Listing ad program, but through Google Shopping as well. But some sellers believe listing fees alone should be the cost to gain exposure on ecommerce platforms.

Those sellers believe that if they're going to spend money to advertise listings, it should be listings hosted on their own site, where selling fees are lower, and so they can continue to market to customers in the future.

Does it make sense for sellers to pay for advertising to draw traffic to an online marketplace, especially in light of the fact that marketplaces may draw shoppers away from a seller's listing by posting links to items from rival sellers? You tell us.

Sellers are discussing the new Etsy Ads advertising platform on the Etsy boards, leave a comment below.

What is wrong with sites like Etsy, Ebay, Bonanza,etc..... us sellers pay enough in fees that they take daily to the tune of millions.... that THEY should pay for advertising to generate buyers to our sites. It would benefit both parties. Instead, Etsy now is yet trying to nickel and dime the hard working sellers into paying more monies for something the site should be responsible for in the first place! The GREED of these sites is unacceptable!

Etsy paid the Google Shopping fees long after they started charging people for it. I was surprised how long they paid for it without raising our fees. Anyway, I wish they would maybe raise the listing fee a little bit to cover the Google Shopping exposure (20 cents for 4 months is a steal).

we used to sell daily on etsy , no problem.  the more phony fees they started taking , the less we sold. now it's to the point that there is no sales on the payment page at all. the only thing on that page is phony promoted listing fees. days and days of them. how dumb to they think everyone is ?? it's now just like ebay. greed always rules. there is no honesty anymore !! goodby.

Regardless of how much you spend on ads or any other BS promotions, your items won’t be seen unless Etsy wants them to be seen.  Or rather, the robots have to be programmed by their Etsy humans in such a way that your listings will show up in search.
I used to think that search was broken, but now I realize it’s not. It is 100% controlled so that they pick winners and losers.

There’s simply not enough money for the greedy swine in vintage and handmade one-offs.  To keep the millions rolling in they need a steady stream of mass produced goods from overseas.  That’s what they mean by “scale”.

Another thing, just like their colleagues in China, Etsy admins are clamping down on free speech.  No complaints or deviation from Etsy Thought is permitted on or off site.
If you get caught on FB or any other social media commenting unfavorably, they will shut you down.  Total dictatorship with no recourse or appeal.
I am hoping that one day a reporter will confront Josh or one of the other honchos and ask them point blank about Etsy censorship.
For many of us who got on the wrong side of the robots, there is no choice but to move to another venue.  Etsy is just too vindictive.
Truth is that

Funny thing, now with no net neutrality (despite assurances to the contrary), whenever I do a search I get results for eBay, Amazon, Walmart, ETSY or Hayneedle..when I look for anything ANTIQUE, Vintage or otherwise not available from any of those sites.

I know that smaller businesses with websites are  are out there and I tend to find them by accident, not with my search engine.  My point is, Google and others are already sending me to Etsy.  Why should you pay extra for THAT?  Etsy in particular was at one time a place to shop for who know and like handcrafted things like  hand dyed fabrics and  jewelry.

And of course, it is ultra helpful that whatever you click on from a Google search usually ends with a "OOPS!  That item has sold!" message from Etsy.

No, never will I pay for Etsy Google shopping ads - if I'm going to spend money for google ads, it will be to direct potential buyers to my website

Just more green + spin from Etsy Corp - they must think we're all stupid

It's THEIR JOB to bring the traffic. Stop being greedy like eBay and do it.  There is NO REASON I should have to pay extra to sell my stuff.  Enough already, sellers are fleeing eBay in droves, they've had enough. Wise up before you go belly up.

I never used PL when I had active Etsy shops after the first few hours the ads became available (all my listings were for vintage items, and the ads were being shown in handmade search results).

I think Etsy's bean counters totaled up the amount of the daily budgets bid by all sellers versus the amount of ads actually paid for.  Saw it was a big hunk of cash, and Etsy devised a way to use up those budgets daily.

Etsy isn't thinking of increased income from increased fees from sold items.  They are just trying to get a hold of the total budgeted amounts for the ads.  Bad for sellers, good for Etsy.

The problem is that too many scared and inexperienced shops buy the kool aide and sign on without thinking it through.

Why on earth would anyone of sound mind spend their hard earned money to promote Etsy as a business entity on the stock market?  Any such advertising will be going toward helping other shops make sales, and while I would like to see everyone do well, I am NOT going to pay so they can do so.

What was once free they've figured out a way to monetize and nickel and dime people who are already victims of crazy fees, i.e.: basically stealing shipping money, and the stupid 'free shipping' scam where all we do is lose, so they can make shareholders richer.

We are just "churn" so there is never anything for us succeed in these schemes, its all about their bottom line and quarterly reporting.

etsy really knows it's customers well
because you would seriously have to be mentally unfit, to buy into this, but this is etsy's MO

give them hope, give them help, tell them it's their tags, tell them it's their pictures, tell them to promote , tell them they need buy google ads, tell them whatever, it takes to keep the suckers on the site and most important keep the suckers feeding the machine with money.

Etsy's whole platform looks so retarded.
It may be time to skip it 'til something Nice and Classy comes along...

"Nice and Classy"

that sounds like a good website name - can we get that going?

Sellers are desperate for a good honest viable site to work with. Not happening

If I was selling on Etsy - which I'm no longer doing - pay google to drive traffic to them would not be in my agenda - drving traffice to my own website would be a better choice.  That being said - just getting the buyer there doesn't close the deal. America is broke - the government and CEO's have squeezed the crap out of America and now their faced with ??? what are we gonna do now

Seriously,
Strict uniform oversight is missing from the "Mom & Pop" online store Genre.
Abuse by the respective CEOs has fostered the absolute need for government intervention.
I said it.
It's absolutely true.
We need to get the skeevy CEO bottom feeders contained and removed from the entire scene.
NOW.

I just cancelled my google ads on Etsy due to this New Etsy Ads for the following reasons:

Now THEY will optimize my budget--no longer have control over my bid per click amount, which when my low bid is $.10, theirs might be $1.00.

And, now THEY will determine the BEST REGION for which they will target my ads--with NO REGARD as to where I sell.  Guess what?  I sell ONLY to US, and that's where I want to target.  Oftentimes, when watching Google Analytics realtime visitors, I get a lot of viewers from Canada, Austrailia, and France.  Um--I don't want that phenomenon that other foreigners come to visit my items, be the trigger that determines that my ads will be slated to target France or whereever, since I don't sell there.

Um--Etsy--NO THANKS, I'LL PASS.

Etsy (ebay wannabe using everything from ebay's playbook.)

ebay (Amazon wannabe using everything from Amazon's playbook.)

Amazon (G-d)

Sellers (getting screwed at every turn.)

There is not a single program, not a single one that is designed to help sellers. They are all to gain more profit for the platform at any cost, for any reason by any means necessary.

This one is brilliant. Let's get sellers to pay for OUR advertising. More fees for us. Then, we can put even more ads in their listings. More fees for us. If it doesn't work, not prob, we haven't lost a dime.  And if we ever do lose, we'll just pull more BS fees out of our collective arses and spin it like we actually care about these dummies.

I don't use the Etsy Promoted Listings but I do use Google's Promoted Listings. Etsy's did absolutely nothing, more like turning customers away. Google's brought them back twofold.

I'm not in the States but I really think that someone who is needs to file a complaint with the NY AG office - in fact, many people should be doing it because Etsy is located there.

Forcing people to break the law so they can make money, and threatening to demote them in search, and thereby ruining their business, if they refuse to break the law is outrageous and can NOT be lawful.

If you're paying your fees, which now are automatic at the time of sale, then you should be getting exactly what everyone else is for the money.
