Etsy Wants to Pick Your Brain

Etsy invited sellers to join its online research group to share ideas on how to make the marketplace better. It's not the first time Etsy has called upon sellers for feedback. In 2016, Etsy created a 15-member Seller Advisory Board to provide feedback about the challenges sellers faced and, in its words, "to play a key role in shaping the way future decisions are made."

In an EcommerceBytes blog post about Etsy's 2016 Seller Advisory Board, we noted that eBay Voices participants (who were able to remain members for many, many years) benefited tremendously from participating in a similar program from the rival marketplace.

In an invitation to sellers to join "Etsy Impressions" this week, the company said there would be several ways to participate:

- Invitations via email to take part in multiple surveys and other research activities each month

- Exclusive conversations with Etsy researchers to offer your suggestions for how the website could be improved

- Sneak peaks at exciting, new projects Etsy is working on to help us make important decisions Interested in joining? We hope so!

There's a link to learn more about participating in the program, where sellers can find a link to a site operated by Vision Critical to learn even more.

Let us know if you will be joining and what you hope to gain.

I do not understand Etsy uses Ayden for their “Etsy Pay”. Etsy has choice of payout timing. Etsy refunds are easy to make for shipping overpayments. They must have used a “canned package”. Ebay must be reinventing the wheel with all these common/expected requirements being talked about or still to come in future. Ebay pushed/required GSP yet it is not in Managed Payments? Etsy converts foreign payments to US$ no problem. What is Ebay’s problem paying Pitney Bowes?

I honestly doubt that Etsy is looking for ideas about making the site more seller-friendly.  Just like the ''seller advisory board'' mentioned in the article above, this seems like misdirection to distract shop owners through the holiday shopping season.  And deceive the investors and stock holders about how Etsy corporate really treats their customers, the sellers.

Lol  investors (the ones with real skin in the game), board of directors, & CEO’s of publicly held companies don’t care about the company, it’s customers, or its sellers at all. It’s not their company. They have absolutely no emotional or vested interest beyond safe guarding their own financial interests period. It is a publicly traded company whose SOLE purpose is to squeeze as much money out of it as humanly possible. That’s it, that’s all.

If the company is profitable, then it changes hands multiple times so that everyone can get a slice. Once the company has no future profitability they run it into the ground, give it one last squeeze, sell off what’s left to a competitor or the company simply goes out of business. Then they move on to the next opportunity.

This is corporate America. The sooner people realize that the better off they will be.

Maxmad- you are the BEST!  Your comment is spot on.
There is no upside to participating in any Etsy surveys or promotions.  It just puts a target on your back and makes it easier for them to mess with your shop and direct your traffic elsewhere.
The people who run the site, the mods, are extremely vindictive social warriors who are quick to punish thought crime or any other infraction.
Best to keep your head down and don't say anything.

Etsy asks for seller preferences and then proceeds to do whatever the heck they chose and claim it was what we asked for. They really do not care one iota about their sellers because there will be more coming onboard when people leave.

Its no different then eBays "You asked, we listened" garbage.

Even if %99 of the input goes against what they did/are doing/want to do - nothing will change.

It doesnt matter how many people hate eBays VERO, Returns programs, eBaypay or anything else - Etsy like eBay will just do as they please - its called WINDOW DRESSING.

Its similar to eBays "Tell us what you think" .... they dont REALLY want to know - its there to look consumer friendly (when they arent).

It just proves they are not intelligent enough to make it better themselves.

What a crock!! Etsy does not care what the sellers think.. They  do these things so they can say they asked . Then they do what they want and claim we asked for it!. They don't give a hoot about their sellers.. they only care about squeezing us dry and their bottom line.

Well, I'm giving it a shot. I assumed Etsy would choose who they wanted from the survey questions, but all of a sudden I was on the ''Etsy Impressions'' site! There are various posts and topics there, but the most recent is from July 2018.

This is a joke. It's just Etsy's way of TRYING to fool sellers into thinking they have a say about their own businesses. Don't waste your breath or time on sharing anything with these jokers because anything you say will be handled like a stack of resumes nobody wants to go through.

@purpleiris - I'm hoping to get insight into behind the scenes at Etsy, as in what's coming up in the future (not what they had for lunch or how much recycling they did yesterday!).

@Sierra, do you think that anything you learn will actually turn out to be what happens in the future? Better yet, do you think that anything that happens in the future under the current regime will be anything of mutual benefit?

In my nearly six years at Etsy, it has been my experience that anything we thought was great for sellers was only Etsy setting itself up for something that's only great for them in the future. Etsy tries to manipulate its sellers into doing what it wants. If you don't volunteer, then they will find a way to force it on you.

Examples:

1. Allowing existing shops to keep their PayPal separate back when they started requiring integration for new shops -- an option that was stolen from us this year because we didn't fall in line like they wanted. Since most sellers chose to keep theirs separate, they forced integration on us and now we no longer have control of our own money and have to wait to be paid instead of having instant access to those funds via our own PayPal accounts. I won't even go into what this did to those sellers who have loans and such through PayPal.

Back then, sellers predicted that we would also one day be forced into it. Did Etsy ever confirm that? Not until they were ready to actually do it. It was this move that had me teetering at the edge of closing up shop.

So, the "seller churn" comment was like a hurricane-force wind to blow me over it. I didn't need that much of a push, so for it to be such a hard one made it inevitable that I would leave and never look back -- and that's just what I did.

2. They have been openly giving preference to those who offer free shipping for a long time now. Yet, not enough sellers took the bait, so they shoved it down their throats. Now, they either offer it or they most likely won't be seen in search, which is already difficult to be found in.

3. They said they were going to improve search years ago and keep claiming they've achieved that with what they currently have in place. Would you agree with that assessment?

I was going to go on, but what's the point? If you're interested in gaining insight into how Etsy intends to screw its sellers in the future, then more power to you. LOL

Hahaha! I just had to share the funny thought I just had. Ever heard Pat Benatar's Sex as a Weapon song? In my head, I started hearing...

Stop using search as a weapon! LOL

I miss my stand-alone PayPal; that was my online spending money! I've had a PP account for about 20 years now and can count on one hand the number of times I've used a card thru PP.

Etsy search HAS improved, but there is still work to be done on it!

I had added ''free shipping'' to about half of my listings over the last couple of months. Over the weekend, I did a little research to see how it has been working for me. I thought it wasn't doing much and, with 26 orders since June 1st (total of 35 items), only 4 of those items had ''free shipping'' so I would say that my assumption is correct. Still, I decided to try their ''guaranteed free shipping over $35'' for awhile, but that is mostly because Etsy is reportedly doing an advertising campaign focused on free shipping this month.
