Facebook is launching checkout on its Marketplace so sellers can reach buyers outside their local area. "People will soon be able to ship Marketplace items anywhere in the continental US and pay for their purchases directly on Facebook," the company announced at its annual F8 developers conference.
"For sellers this means reaching more buyers and getting paid securely, and for buyers this means shopping more items - near or far." But it's important to note that sellers can continue to offer local pickup. Under a "Delivery Method" field, sellers can select FedEx, USPS, UPS, and Others and specify the appropriate shipping rate in addition to Local Pickup.
PayPal's Bill Ready revealed that the payments portion was built on PayPal's marketplace platform, calling Facebook Marketplace's development "quite impactful for buyers and sellers," allowing them complete transactions directly on the marketplace without leaving it.
However, it could come at a cost, according to Bloomberg. "Facebook also says it is considering charging sellers a fee for facilitating these deals. "We are evaluating a selling fee that is in line with competitive platforms to help cover payment processing and programs such as purchase protection," a spokesperson said."
But Facebook has some work to do if it expects sellers to pay a fee, according to comments left for Marketplace by sellers as part of this year's Sellers Choice Awards, which you can read on the EcommerceBytes website.
Nevertheless, the changes will move Facebook Marketplace beyond sites like Craigslist and closer to mobile selling app Mercari, which came in 4th place in Sellers Choice this year.
There was no indication if Facebook will begin collecting sales tax to comply with Marketplace Facilitator laws in a growing number of states once transactions take place on its Marketplace.
The news about Facebook Marketplace was a small portion of the full announcement from Facebook F8. Let us know what you think - and if you'd be willing to pay fees for selling through Facebook.
