Etsy Battles Spammers in the Forums

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy suffered a spam attack in its forums on Friday evening and again on Saturday, and users were concerned that it took time for Etsy to remove the inappropriate posts that many also found offensive.

Please note do not click on any links in questionable discussion-board threads.

A reader sent us screenshots showing that late Friday night, "kopbwajy," a member since ‎April 6, 2019, posted threads advertising "abortion pills" in ten or more forum categories.

This thread, "Why is the Etsy Forum flooded with sales pitches for abortion pills by a new registered user," posted at 4 pm on Saturday, shows a spammer returned. "There were a whole bunch of them last night also," a user wrote. "The threads were removed and supposedly so was the spammer. I'm sure this is the same person, just with a new identity."

One user said it unfortunately happens from time to time in the forums, especially on the weekends, but said that now Etsy moved to a new platform managed by Lithium, they were unsure how long it would take for the posts to be removed.

At 8:24 pm, an Etsy moderator said Etsy had dealt with the problem.

Another report of a spammer using Etsy's messaging system (called convos) caught our eye, this time user "mgq8o5dx," a member since April 23, 2019 (we wouldn't assume the photograph is really that of the user).

mgq8o5dx posted three threads advertising affiliate marketing courses (again, beware of clicking on links in such threads):

Super Affiliate System Review - How To Start Affiliate Marketing For Beginners (in Etsy Coupons forum)

Wеlcomе to our Supеr Affiliatе Systеm rеviеw, i will givе you a look at what John Crеstani’s product is all about. (in Fine Art Friday forum)

Supеr Affiliatе Systеm (SAS) is a program intеndеd to hеlp bеginnеr affiliatе markеtеrs to startmaking monеy onlinе. (in AAT Advertising Activity Team forum)

This incident is a bit more subtle - clearly, since the threads, posted on Tuesday, are still active on the Etsy forums.

Ebay has had the same issues with their forums being flooded with these posts.  It must be something to do with Lithium because  they get up in the Sellers folder and then have sat for anywhere from 24-48 hours even when they have been reported.  I guess it takes a Lithium moderator to do anything with these posts.

The new Etsy forums are worthless and unusable.  Let them spam away. Who cares?

you run a forum, you get spam, no way around it

when we ran our forum, we simply allowed our long time good members the power to delete messages and ban spammers, themselves it kept spam to a minimum

I got the affiliate message in a product inquiry. So it's not just on the boards.

They always have to screw around with what works ... in this instance the new forum is a useless piece of garbage.

It seems all things useless are the new norm on Etsy and now they're messing with the email / messages.

It will be interesting to see how they try to control what goes on there, and how to control with whom we speak and how.

I have not been to the forums since Etsy changed the format so I would not be bothered by any of this. Looks like I made a good decisions.  Nothing in the forums is of interest to me anymore.

when the lithium boards were first rolled out on etsy, we all got hit with a very suspicious but completely legit looking email from etsy.  etsy had failed to tell us that once the new forums rolled out, we would need to change a setting ON THE FORUM pages to prevent forum message from being forwarded to our email accounts.

the spammer posted the messages, messages were forwarded using etsy's message system, and the resulting email looked like it had come for etsy itself... not the spammer.

and the message urged everyone to sign in using provided link to the spammers to change password information, for security of course.

lots of folks fell for it.
