If an Item Is Posted to Etsy, Does It Get Seen?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

It may seem like a philosophical riddle, like the famous, "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?" But there's nothing Zen or peaceful about the fact that Etsy sellers are unable to see if their listings are getting viewed thanks to "stuck" stats, presumably the result of a glitch on Monday.

Sellers discussed the problem with their dashboard metrics on the Etsy boards. "Are people even seeing our shops," one seller wondered, as "Views" were not updated.

According to the Etsy help files:

- Views are updated in real-time;

- Visits data refreshes a few times per day. This allows us to calculate traffic and filter out as much traffic as we can from bots. We'll indicate when your stats were last updated in the top right corner of the Explore your data graph.

But that is not happening, sellers noted. And one seller said their Promoted Listing stats were also "messed up again."

In the same thread, some sellers reported that it appeared there might be problem with checkout as well, but Etsy Status reported only a search-related problem occurring on Monday afternoon.

Sellers also wondered why no one from Etsy addressed their concerns in the thread.

I've never ever in my Etsy life ever sold anything on Etsy.

If you don't know anything about Etsy why bother to comment on this thread? :(

It's always been true that some Etsy listings get more 'love' than others.

Promoted Listings has made this more true than ever. I don't find that promoting a listing increases it's sell-through rate, but it certainly increases the cost.

Promoted Listings also suffer from a lack of accountability - they'll say '50 people clicked on this listing' and charge you for it, but you have no way to verify that anyone really clicked on anything, and the stats often don't correspond with the promotion claim/charge. Also, the costs tend to creep up and up, and they're very difficult to control.

You'd go crazy if you spent any amount of time watching the stats.

With promoted listings they no longer have incentive to show your items for the initial cost. They will do whatever possible to get you to give them more money.

end of story.

Etsy sure seems to be following eBay's playbook: (1) Charge a listing fee; (2) don't show listing; (3) ask sellers to pay for promoted listings so buyers will see their merchandise.

For the record, Etsy’s promoted listings have been broken for months now:

Etsy has publicly stated that when you purchase promoted listings they TURN OFF your google traffic feed

80% of etsy traffic comes from Google

You would have to be absolutely mentally incompetent to use etsy promoted listings,

Etsy has “promoted listings,” which are internal ads.

Etsy also has “Google shopping” ads.

Their explanation:

The truth is that the way Etsy is set up now, nothing you do matters.  You can spend a fortune on promotions via promoted listings and/or Google ads and it doesn't guarantee your listings will get seen.

There are no more humans involved in the process.   The search engine is Black Bird and it is AI run by robots.

The only way you will get seen is if the robots pick your items or shop.  It seems to be completely random.

For the last couple of years I have hired and paid private marketers (NOT Fiverr) to promote my items on social media like Twitter, FB, etc.  Their fees are reasonable and I can use them for a week or more.  I can say for sure that my own promoters are the only reason my shops get traffic and some sales.

Etsy promoted listings don't do a thing and neither do the Google ads they try to get you to use.

Etsy is literally run by people who are either Socialists or Communists.  They do not believe in merit.  They say they don't care about money and only want to save the world and the poor starving artists.  Meanwhile, they have mostly women, many of them of a certain age, who are doing their handwork for slave wages.

Good luck to anyone trying to make a living from Etsy.  It's simply not possible for 99% of the sellers.

Alright, here's what I know :
As I make a Completely unique product, it is seen quite well across Etsy, always.
A) A New Listing gets views.
B) Use relevant Tag words and phrases when making the listing.
C) If your stuff starts getting stale, Deactivate it, wait a day, then activate it. Views should increase for it.
Up until 2 weeks ago, I was doing a steady $2,500 - 3,000 a month.
I expect it will drop off to zero with the approach of Great Weather.
That's O.K.
I have an estate to maintain  :o)

Dunno about "socialists" or "communists" being in charge of Etsy's policies, but the site seems modeled on contemporary Chinese culture.  Consider the "citizen score" and the way Marketplace Integrity has been -- for more than a decade now -- used to mentor deceptive sellers in methods of less obvious deception.  The safety of buyers was never much of an issue compared to retaining and boosting successful bigger shops.  If ThreeBirdNest was an example of a "poor starving artist" then that is what a lot of Etsy sellers would love to be.

Since I started on Etsy back in July last year, it has been very slow growth, but it certainly has been growth. I'm up to 51 sales so far and my price points are fairly high.

Just the same, nothing really makes sense on that site. The promoted listings, Google advertising has done absolutely nothing to bring customers to my shop, so why pay them that?

It's a way of selling less on eBay for me and I hope the steady growth continues to where I can dump eBay for good.

@CanBrit

i know this may be hard to believe but, The minute you promote even "one" listing or pay for one single google ad , etsy will re-direct ALL the natural google traffic that you once had to your items, to other sellers items,

You may never recover from it

I have read many posts of sellers doing this, where they see a small gain in sales after promoting, but soon after etsy re-directs googles natural traffic, and your left with very little ,

never promote your listings on etsy,, don't even try it once, you will be sorry

Etsy's "promoted listings" have a fatal flaw. They are shown in search results that have no bearing on what the potential buyer looked for. For instance, if you search for a man's shirt, you are shown promoted listings for  women's shirts  in addition to men's shirts. Why any seller would pay for this "seller service"  is beyond me.

PLs don't match search terms when the sellers intentionally add irrelevant tags to their listings, and then promote those listings using the irrelevant tags.  This practice goes back about a decade when PLs were called (I think) featured listings.  Etsy had more of a category structure then.  Sellers would edit their items to place them in irrelevant categories, and then purchase a ''feature'' in the irrelevant category.

A lot of what doesn't work well on Etsy is due to seller behavior.

ROFL - what?  Etsy is in it for bottom line money - the site reflects that with promotion of easily replicated products that can sold for cheap and shipped for free, mass manufacturing and Ali-Express style listings. They care about money as much as any website. We poor dumb wimmin 'of a certain age' (whatever that is) are not too stupid to know what we're doing - despite the crap search and myopic policies, many creators there actually make good money, and those who are tired of Etsy's games (and that at times nauseatingly saccharine landing page they have), will just walk away.

Oh, and it's the corporate oligarchs that pay slave wages.

Etsy makes ''noises'' about making ecommerce human and saving the planet and a lot of other BS. Behind the benign mask is yet another evil and greedy company ready to grind the faces of the poor (sellers and artists) while the NYC fatcats loll on their velvet couches and sip champagne.

Folks if you're not happy with a venue - try another or start your own. With the millions of sellers on these sites and more starting everyday - you have more competition and that isn't going to stop.

I joined Etsy about 6 months ago. I am not disappointed. I have sold things on Etsy that eBay buyers won't consider purchasing. Although my experience is limited to several months, I have found that Etsy buyers are willing to pay more than eBay buyers, who are always looking for a bargain. I don't bother with the forums. It's a waste of time IMO. I also don't use Etsy promotions. I can't see paying someone to do something I can do myself. I use good hashtags for my items and I promote on social media sites. The only problem I have had so far is occasionally being charged a shipping fee even though I don't use Etsy shipping. I'm in the process of getting that sorted out. Otherwise, no complaints at this point.
