Is Marketplace Messaging Spam a Growing Problem?

By: Ina Steiner

As if it weren't bad enough that spammers target sellers through email and by phone, they're also using marketplaces to annoy and potentially try and defraud sellers.

A reader forwarded a screenshot of a message he received from a spammer that was sent through the eBay messaging system. Attached to the message was an image showing a URL that linked to a site registered in the Ukraine.

The sender of the message had zero feedback, and the account was registered to a user in the Ukraine.

The gist of the message was that the sender would help the seller market their listings and help them with product descriptions and images. "Find the link attached pic here," the sender wrote. The URL was spread out similar to a captcha clue, clearly an attempt to evade detection by eBay, which doesn't allow users to include URLs and email addresses in their messages.

Unsolicited messages are a huge red flag, and when they are sent in violation of a company's terms of use, it's best to run, not walk, away.

It's a huge distraction for sellers who must be sure to read messages carefully so they can respond to customers and would-be buyers in a timely manner.

Is this a growing problem, or was the message our reader received simply a fluke that somehow got through eBay's spam detection system?

I've had messages sent to me that contained pictures. Well not exactly pictures. Photos of the person's email, phone number, address, etc.

Ebay allows photos to be sent to sellers and buyers alike but it would be hard to track every single one to see what the image contained.

I received two of these about 3 hours apart both from Ukraine both zero feedback just yesterday..I hit report button and just received Ebay form letter email. I suspect it's because I just set up an Instagram account tied to my store.

This is not a new problem. As long ago as 2002 I would get spam from Pakistani leather companies because I was selling leather coats. There were a few other instances as I recall, then the problem seemed to stop.
