eBay Seller Objects to Ads for Handymen in His Listings

By: Ina Steiner

Are you seeing ads for handymen in your eBay listings? One seller is and asked how to opt out:

"I just realized that there are professional installer offers like "Porch" and "Handy" being automatically added to my listings. I don't like my listing being tampered with. I should be able to opt "in" if I want it and not have it forced on my listing.

"I am not promoting these companies or getting a kick-back from advertising their services in my listing.

"I prefer to keep my listings simple and NOT look like I am trying to make more money off of my customer. Advertising has run amok! I pay for my store and pay a fee for every item that sells. I should have a choice to keep my listing free of advertising."

This goes back to last year when eBay announced a partnership with three services: Handy, Porch, and Installernet. eBay pitched it as a way to help buyers ("eBay will continue to seek new opportunities to expand its services offering to meet the needs of shoppers"), but of course, it's a source of revenue for eBay, which it doesn't share with sellers on whose listings the ads appear.

Are you seeing ads for these services in your listings? We'd love to see screenshots and hear what you think both as a buyer and as a seller, and if that's changed since this November blog post. Would you feel differently if eBay was sharing the ad revenue with you?

Its complete and utter nonsense that we pay for space and there are ads trying to take the buter away from my ad.

Its hideous and should be illegal. End of story. Either give us free listings with ads or remove the ads.

Ebay is not a fair place to do business.

Ebay has been doing this for years. Where have you been. There is no opting in or opting out. Its Ebays playground. You stay you give them the right to advertise as they see fit on any vacant space you think you own.

Ebay has no morals. Its all in the bottom line.

"Its Ebays playground."

eBay's playground.  That's a pretty good description, but likely not the way that you intended.

eBay has become a toxic playground. Play at your own risk.

Ads on the Internet - period - have become so obnoxious that they are paralyzing the surfing experience. Fortunately my pop-up blocker and ad blocker circumvent most of them.

As for ebay, the whole trash site is one big ad and It's only going to get worse. ebay is about volume, be it Chinese crap, counterfeits, ads, and everything in between. They have no interest in quality, honesty, loyalty or fairness, never have.

@toolguy
I don't see any ads on that page.  The bots probably noticed the word "gun" in some of your listings and did not want to associate their ad with guns.  Also, you have a specialty item, occasional and specific traffic, only someone in the trade will even know what it is.  Ads are placed where many eyes are LOOKING, on mass market products.  If someone wanted to HIDE an ad, they'd put it on your pages.  And they would be punishing the advertiser.

When I went to your LIST of items for sale, there were 3 ads on the bottom of the page for credit cards.  Also went to this item: "Huck Arconic Alcoa 99-5106 1/2" 13MM BOM Rivet Gun Riveter Nose Assembly 2624".  At the bottom of the page, there is a scroll area with more of your listings.  Below that is a box labelled "People were also interested in" with 6 more items, NOT yours.  Below that is a 2-page scroll box that says "People who viewed this item also viewed", also NOT your items.  Your items are outnumbered 2 to 1 by your competition, even though it's YOUR item page.  I know, you have unique items, good thing you do.  Many people selling have mass market items, lots of sellers, but also lots of buyers (hence the words mass market).  It's  a relative thing.  Maybe you don't consider your competitor's items on your page to be competition, or ads, or a threat.  Some people would think otherwise.

Imagine living in the year 2019 and not using an Ad Blocker.

eBay rakes more from ads on YOUR listings than they do from anything else associated, including a sale.

Which is why they do everything possible to entice quantity over quality.  And it shows, no?

eBay's HUNGER for money (damn sellers dont want to be raped on FVFs! LOL) made them put ads on all pages.

Making money on those ads is about 2 issues.

A) they put little to no effort in fixing the marketplaces because the "real money is coming from ads"

B) eBays mafioso behavior encourages this type of behavior.

Since no one ever challenged them aka has the money and time to do so, they behave this way with impunity.

"Watcha gonna do about it" (same treatment you get as a seller when an issue arises) is eBays answer.

Imagine if you rented space in a mall, and the mall owner come to you one day and without permission puts up an advertisement for something on your wall! Thats the same thing here.

Its worse if you "pay for a store" since eBay then has no "out" for the behavior.

Your FVFs should cover what ever happens on that page, but DWs greed for "surface advertising" is more important, and Mary Oh Hubris - DWs chief lawyer - makes sure they can get away with it.

BTW - it used to be worse. eBay used to (dont know if they still do - they may) have ads on the bottom of listings that took you offsite! Lord have mercy on your eBay soul if YOU DID it - but for them and their REAL partners - it was business as usual.

eBay is a crime syndicate, period the end. They just also happen to have a website where people sell things.

The reason they took away JavaScript was almost surely because somebody had figured out how to use it to remove the ad elements.

I sell art prints, and although similar adds do not show up on most of my listings, I've occasionally seen ads for framing.  The ads do not mention anything about the type of framing (for example, is museum-grade glass used, are spacers used, are the prints dry mounted, etc.)  The prices that are offered seem too good to be true for any archival level framing that would be appropriate for the types of collectible prints I sell.  I've heard countless horror stories (not necessarily from the services offered on eBay, but in general) about valuable art prints that have been completely destroyed by framers that don't know what they're doing.  Now, eBay is making it look like I'm endorsing a business that I know absolutely nothing about.  And, as the original post said, there is no way to opt out.
