Speculation about a Possible Amazon Etsy Matchup

Tech pundits and reporters love to speculate about possible acquisitions, and Geekwire today asked its staff which companies they thought Amazon should acquire.

Of the more intriguing ecommerce-related suggestions, one reporter suggested the Kohl's department store chain, and one editor made a case for Amazon acquiring Etsy:

"Monica Nickelsburg, civic editor: Etsy. Amazon launched Handmade, an Etsy competitor for artisanal goods, in 2017. Etsy's shares took a hit in what seemed like a bad omen for the handmade goods marketplace. But Etsy seemed to rebound, topping $1 billion in gross merchandise sales for the first time at the end of 2017. Meanwhile, Amazon's Handmade marketplace doesn't appear to be making much of a splash. It makes sense for Amazon to acquire Etsy and continue to operate it independently like the Seattle tech giant did when it gobbled up Zappos. Etsy brings with it valuable sellers and loyal customers who are attached to the marketplace's brand and aesthetic."

Here are all of the of suggestions Geekwire made for Amazon's own "shopping list," let us know what you think! Do Etsy sellers have a different opinion than non-Etsy sellers? Do you have different opinions from the buyer point of view versus the seller viewpoint?

Amazon doesn't need any used web sites. They have the intelligence and know how to complete with them. No reason to spend anything to acquire them and then have to babysit the sellers that come with it. They have their own site and the sellers are well trained.

No, because sellers do not need to have to babysit Amazon and how to treat sellers, let Amazon hoodwink their already well hoodwinked sellers.

NO,, Etsy fees would skyrocket and sellers would not have control of their shops.

It won't happen so keep dreaming.  Bezos is putting all his money in Space flights to Mars.

Well if it did happen it would be because Amazon's "handmade" category is a HUGE joke. Have you ever looked in there? Pretty danged hard to find anything that's not made by some small chinese person in china - whoever set that little dream up certainly missed the mark - is it any wonder Etsy is so successful still?

I can't think of any two sites that are more mis-matched for a merger.  Besides, mergers don't help anyone except the shareholders' and the C-Suite Officers' bottom line.  It just creates bigger monopolies.

Amazon can have Kohl's.  Cheap clothing that looks worn out after 3 washings, Vera Wang who no one cares about anymore (She's so early 2000s!), shoes that only come in size 8 and 9, home appliances at twice the price you'll pay at other retailers and 4 times as much as Amazon, cheap silver tone jewelry that went out of style in 1999. Kohl's is where the poor people shop because it's the only discount department store in town.

If everyone wants Amazon to absorb Etsy, then it's a good thing I got out when I did. I got no consideration from Etsy for spending moolah in fees, then getting few sales out of it. Etsy is broken. Amazon would inherit a failed company, and that is not what Amazon does. I would rather that Amazon cleaned up its own act.

No. Etsy needs new leadership, yes, but not Amazon. A lot of sellers will leave just on principle. The only way sellers willl fall back in love with Etsy is if they return to something closer to their roots. Obviously that isn’t happening. They’ll just keep changing until their isn’t anything left that shop owners feel good about.

There is a robust eCom based marketplace for vintage, collectible, artisan, and used out there.  But it's fractured and splintered and scattered.  Significant chunks of that shrapnel were sprayed by the wrecking ball that was disruptive innovation.  There's a stub still alive, but the amputation was purposeful.

If someone with vision could see how this marketplace could be viable as a conglomeration, while focusing on tolerance for the independence of business practice and diversity of terms for trades that is critical to this market's sustanance and growth - AND if that someone could also see that trying to compete as if it were a retail marketplace would be a 'YUGE' error in judgement and oversight, then all they would need is the funds and real-estate (bytes have mass), and talent to stitch it together into something that would be truly innovative.

Oh, and everybody's stock would be worth more too.

I don't think it would be good for the Etsy sellers (and ultimately not good for Amazon) if Amazon acquired Etsy. The sellers on Etsy went there to get away from the eBays and Amazons of the world. While it seems things at Etsy haven't gone so smoothly of late (such as the forum issues), and sellers appear to have valid complaints about certain changes that have been implemented, Amazon would be better off advertising its own handmade site and working with the sellers who already have accounts there.

I am more than disappointed to see that comments are being deleted, possibly because they don't fit with the host's way of thinking? I took time out of my day to write a lengthy opinion (nothing hysterical and/or provocative) regarding Etsy. I've been reading eCommerce for years but with all of the ''wonderful accolades'' that were bestowed on Etsy last week as well as capturing the #1 favorite spot in the Marketplace survey... I can't help but wonder if eCommerce is actually in bed with Etsy... sorry... I've been on Amazon and Etsy both forever and while Amazon has its issues for Sellers, there is no comparison to Etsy's lack of ability to steer their ship and make bad decisions daily with total disregard of their Seller's suggestions and opinions and most of all cries for help that are never responded to because Etsy has absolutely no seller support! I could continue, but I'll stop now and monitor how long my comments will stay up this time. And, this will be the last time that I will comment on this platform as you obviously take offense to TRUTH! Thank you!

Aww. C'mon back. It was nothing personal.

When I first found ecomercebytes, it was my little secret. It was a hidden gem. All these smart people who knew what they were talking about. Without censorship. A tiny quiet little site of smart people.

Now ecommercebytes is featured on my google news. It took off.

I suspect that because the site became so popular so quickly, that concessions were made. Perhaps you got caught in a net unintentionally.

@Makingit

I've had posts here that didn't appeared. After I was upset, I rethought it and am grateful.

Here's an example of how un-censorship-like ecommercebytes is:

I had a nightmare last night.

Wenig walked into his luxury designer bathroom but was so medicated that he slipped and cracked his little head on the urinal and drown. Wouldn't that just be a terrible, terrible thing?
