Last Minute Email Marketing from eBay and Etsy

At midday on Sunday, 3 days before Christmas, I received emails from eBay and Etsy urging last-minute shopping. I didn't see how it was possible to get items delivered in time for Christmas unless the items were digital goods or were sold by sellers very close to me offering expedited shipping, and even then it seemed risky.

Etsy's email stated, "7 unique last-minute gifts" and inside it said, "There's still time. You got this. Cross everyone off your list with these creative life-savers." I clicked on Shop Now and saw an array of physical products that would have to be shipped. I clicked on one item, and in the Shipping & Returns section, it said, "Estimated delivery: Dec 24 - 30."

eBay's email stated, "Time running out? Not for the perfect gift card, it's not!" and inside it said, "Last, last, last minute gifts. Finish your shopping with gift cards from eBay and more." Clicking on the "Get it done" button linked to a page of gift cards for sale on eBay that could be delivered via email.

Note that eBay's email did link to some physical items as well from its Deals portal - clicking through on one such item and then clicking again for details, there under the Shipping section it stated, "Guaranteed by Fri. Dec. 27."

Hopefully shoppers are paying close attention to delivery estimates if they're doing last-minute online shopping.

Do you think marketplaces and retailers are cutting it too close to the wire when marketing to holiday procrastinators?

Judging from what I see in my shops, in seems like people are either illiterate these days or else they just don't read.

No skin off Etsy's back if they continue to promote the idea that somehow you can get these items in time for Dec. 24th.

I don't understand why they are wasting time promoting something stupid like this instead of using valuable resources to improve search generally or to promote some different shops than the ones who get all the attention.

50 years ago, I recall the gift exchanging winter holidays were more than just one day.  Relatives arrived all during the week between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, so no one was upset about a gift not being available on a certain day.

I guess now it all has to be there at one time so you can tally up your loot and brag about the haul on social media?  If so, how sad.

Unfortunately, many buyers these days think 1 day delivery is the norm - no matter where they live. The last minute marketing is going to fall back on sellers in a negative way as buyers don't read.

how sad these greedy venues and shipping companies have gotten. they all know that a lot of things are wrong and don't work. they don't care about anything except how much money they get. we'll just punish sellers when it goes wrong !!

I plan to close my sites tomorrow for the holiday. It makes no sense to sell something with next or same day delivery, because millions of people are socked in for the snow, flights are being delayed because of ice, and the USPS can't get it there no matter how efficient they are. eBay and Etsy can do whatever they want. I am going to have a safe and sane holiday, and I hope you do, too.

I got three orders on Sunday, which are being mailed today, all to East Coast states. Since I'm in California, there is no way the packages will arrive tomorrow, even without the bad weather in some locations. I'm happy for the orders, but I hope, as lancecorp mentions, my buyers don't expect one-day delivery.

it's reckless behavior,

etsy's greed out weighs their morals, seen it so many times, with this company

this is the typical stuff that stops us from selling thru them ever again, it's not worth it, etsy will destroy your reputation, and that's very hard to get back,
