Will Departure of Postmaster General Impact Online Sellers?

The head of the US Postal Service is retiring at the end of January. The departure of Postmaster General and CEO Megan J. Brennan comes amid pressure for the organization to change, including more extreme measures such as privatizing the postal service.

In many ways, heading the USPS is a no-win job, given the restrictions on what changes it is able to implement along with various political pressures over what *should* be done.

For years, Congress has failed to act to put the Postal Service on firmer financial footing as the agency continues to face a decline in first class mail and an obligation to prefund employee retirement health benefits, which have strained its coffers.

It's also a hybrid - a quasi-government agency with a mandate to provide affordable, universal mail service but also providing shipping products that must compete with other carriers as if it were a for-profit company.

For small online sellers, the USPS has provided easy and affordable shipping options that helped ecommerce thrive for over two decades.

With shipping costs constantly on the rise, online sellers may feel even less assured of stability with the departure of Postmaster General Brennan. Do you think her departure will have an impact on your business?

I read that pressure from Trump (constant criticizing) forced her to retire.  He wants double the shipping rate for AMZ.  We're looking at another "yearly" postal increase in January.  I'm starting to buy bulk "forever" postage.  We can't get around the cost of USPS shipping....can we?

Chicago48: How many forever stamps would a seller have to put on 10 packages that weigh 1 pound each? That's a crazy way to manage postal increases.

@seller girl

What is crazy is paying full price for postage to ship something. Buy bulk forever stamps at 60 to 70 per cent off of face. Only lazy people would think its crazy to put maybe 15 self stick stamps on a 1 pound package. A savings of up to 3.00 a package isn't crazy.

^^ Did I write that it was for packages?  Nope, it's for personal mail.  I will start to buy forever "priority mail" stamps in quantity.  I don't know many I can afford, but $5.90 is better than paying $8.

@chicago48
I just bought 3000 stamps this morning. Total face of 1650.00 for 900.00

Just remember if you use stamps on priority mail you have to take it to the post office and if you need tracking labels you can order them by the 100's from the post office. Good luck on saving money. It only takes a few seconds to stick em on.

As someone who's handled corporate mail for executives, I can say that it has nothing to do with laziness. Only someone who doesn't have any business experience would consider plastering stamps all over their business's packages as it's a matter of presentation and first impressions of your business. If you're not considering these as important factors to marketing your business, then go right ahead and plaster all those stamps on your packages, but don't call the rest of us lazy for caring about how we present our businesses.

I'm not a proponent of privatizing the USPS because it's The People's service. What I think needs to change is the government should have a LOT less say in the operations of OUR service. The things they've been doing have been a part of their master plan to privatize it and with absolutely no concern for how The People feel about it.

Heck, not even the Postmaster General has the power to do what is needed to make things right at the USPS again. The USPS's problems didn't start until AFTER the government started stealing billions of dollars to allegedly pre-fund retirement pensions that we have NO way of knowing will still be there when retirees go looking for their money.

The federal government is intentionally running the USPS into the ground and it needs to stop. Congress is there to represent THE PEOPLE not their own personal agendas. So, of course being in the position of Postmaster General is currently a no-win situation.

The only thing the government should be doing is ensuring that the policies and procedures developed BY THE USPS are legal and Constitutional. They are not their to force their own personal agendas on THE PEOPLE'S service.

If you use postage stamps on a package you will need to go to the Post Office and mail. Any packages dropped off at boxes or elsewhere will be returned to sender. Then you will have to have new postage as the postage you used to drop the item off paid for the return.
