Strange Pricing Issue on eBay?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

We came across a discussion where a seller said a friend discovered that their eBay listing sold for a fraction of its list price, with the shipping price lowered too. We can't confirm it happened or why, but it prompted us to look back to a change eBay made last year to see if it could be related.

This October 16, 2017, eBay Board announcement states: "Recently, eBay began adding Best Offer to fixed price and auction-style listings," and it recommended that sellers "adjust your auto-decline thresholds to a price you are willing to accept."

Here's a thread where a seller described the consequences - again from 2017.

eBay is determined to find additional ways to encourage sellers to lower prices. In February, we wrote about a survey eBay conducted to solicit feedback on several proposed pricing practices it was considering.

And in June, we wrote about a feature eBay was testing called "Easy Pricing" in which it lowered prices (5% every 5 days in one test) until the item sold or reached a predetermined bottom price.

We don't think there's a need to panic - we couldn't find any other reports of eBay discounting prices on sellers' behalf - but we do think the best course of action is to be proactive and check your listings and your settings regularly. And let us know if you see any issues with regard to pricing on eBay.

This dishonest and sneaky company is in such  desperation mode, I bet they are testing it as we speak and trying to sneak it in with some listings even though they 'say' you have to opt in.

And if ebay is caught, it's tortuous interference. The law suit would be so easy to win you woudn't even have to show up.

I wouldn't be surprised if eBay was lowering prices to make sales. eBay seems to be trying everything imaginable to boost their third quarter financials.

Total and complete desperation appears to have set in which makes me wonder if the first 2 months of the quarter are so bad that they are afraid they are going to show negative growth for the first time ever.  I truly believe if that happens that Wenig will be out the door before the 4th quarter results are ever announced, as should be the case anyway.

Just because a seller has an issue doesn't mean Ebay is at fault.  Sometimes it is just a seller error.  And sometimes Ebay is actually at fault.  There is not enough information here or other sellers saying it has happened to them as well to actually know who did what.

It is more likely that the seller had their setting set incorrectly.

I agreed Ebay is desperate this quarter. I have had 100 or more free listings offered to me on each of my four selling accounts in July and August. While I have used these they have resulted in very few additional sales - less than five sales per account. These were OOAK items priced between $10 and $30. NO free shipping; NO free returns; NO Guaranteed Delivery; NO Promotions; NO “Best Offer”. Only $ Ebay is getting from me is their 10% on the sale and the shipping which is really 15% on most sales.
Not to get political but watch when Ebay (and Etsy too) fail to show expected growth in sales/earnings it will be blamed on the “tariff wars” with China and the strength of the $. Nothing to do with their prices being too high. I sell same items locally at 50% of the total Ebay selling price. My local buyer is not paying for high shipping, Ebay fees or Pay pal fees which equals 50% of my “gross”Ebay sale.

Yes, I find Items are listed for over 3X a reasonable price.
BUT : Ebay is 100% responsible for this.
WE NEED A NEW, CIVILIZED VENUE.
Where we will pay no more than 2% FVF, list for no more than $.50 for the week.
And the Venue is Just A Venue. Not a blood sucker.
Do Not comment on my comment.

I had it happen recently too.  An item that I had listed for above $20 sold for $2.50.   I did not have a best offer on it.

I shipped, but if it happens again I won't.  I lost a considerable amount of money on that transaction.  I am giving eBay the benefit of the doubt on this one but when it comes to pricing I am incredibly meticulous.  In 15+ years of selling I've had some listing description errors but I can't think of one example when I made a pricing error.

eBay will not set my prices.  I will take hits on my metrics until they boot me off before I will allow that.  I honestly don't need them anymore.

You folks that are constantly losing money over eBay's desire to lower the cost of doing business wth them while raising THEIR costs should focus instead on all the fees you are saving with every sale that sneaks past their filters.

C'mon, show a little gratitude, right?

@Marie - I've heard of this twice now from fellow sellers - the price is changed in real time during the listing. The seller changes it back (in one case it kept changing from 44.95 to 24.95) and it defaults back to this other price. I actually think it's a glitch rather than any attempt at manipulation, similar to the glitch that on listing launch the system thinks there has been no price for the item given in the listing, and we get the ".99 and above" error message. I simply hit "list" again and the listing goes through.

I received a email from ebay telling me they added best offer to my fixed listing and then showed me how to opt out if I didn't want it. If I wanted best offer on my listing I would of listed it that way. I don't need ebay messing around with my listings.

Margo, this is normally a sign of what is to come.  They first send you the directive, then they give you a means of opting out, and then months down the road the force it on you, with no option to opt out.

It's the eBay way.

There's a YT video from a seller who admonishes other sellers who price too high on Poshmark.  Posh allows buyers to offer and sellers to counter offer.  I wrote the YT seller that the reason I price high is because I KNOW Posh buyers will make a low-ball offer.
I don't mind an Offer.  But I do mind a site like EB telling me what I should sell at.  If they want to meddle in my sales business, then they should buy Overstock and become a purely single price site.

@Margo, be sure and uncheck the "Best offer" with AUCTIONS.  The dumbest thing that they ever thought of doing.

eBay DESPERATELY needs to make more sales. Not just in a general sense - but in a "we need them now or our 3Q earnings statement will look like cr@p" sense.

So your partner (LMAO) (do they still say they are our partners - or have they given that lie up ??) inserts itself into your business "to help you, help themselves".

True it would be easier to just make more sales the REGULAR way (not hide people or listings, VERO people who sell fakes, even out the postage playing field etc) but why bother doing ANY work at all if you dont have to!

eBay isnt your friend, your buddy, your partner, or even an ecommerce platform. Its a Devin Wenig personal enrichment platform - PERIOD.

interesting - I still have a presence in an antique mall locally here in town.  When we tell our customers we have an ebay store the majority of them inform us they haven't shopped on ebay for a couple of years. Most state they can't find what they want. AND I see an actual uptick in shoppers willing to spend real money - not lowballers - sure we get a few but not many. Perhaps we should be thanking ebay for driving away those buyers looking for the "unique" items?
