Deja vu? Reports that eBay Webinterpret Mayhem Strikes Again

By: Ina Steiner

Sellers are reporting that a very costly eBay glitch involving third-party service Webinterpret has struck again. eBay apologized to sellers in May for problems caused by a "technical error" stemming from a promotional banner in Seller Hub between May 1, 2018 and May 4, 2018 - simply clicking on the banner resulted in the third-party creating duplicate listings on their behalf.

Despite the apology from eBay at the time, sellers said they had great difficulty sorting out the problems it caused, and it wasn't clear all sellers impacted by the issue were able to receive credits caused by duplicate listings across international eBay sites.

Lo and behold, sellers said this week that eBay sent the same promo on September 4th with the same consequences - simply clicking to learn more opted them into the program, sellers reported.

A seller posted a screenshot of the banner advertising the promotion that states: "List More, Globally. Sell More, Period. Increase your sales on 6 international eBay sites and pay no insertion fees. Learn more."

One seller on the eBay discussion board thread wrote in part:

"I wish I read these community boards before I got unwillingly opted in yesterday (9/7/2018) without permission by Webinterpret. Just like many others, all I did was click on the ebay Seller's Hub link that said "learn more" about getting more international exposure for my ebay listings."

Here's a blog post from May describing the fallout.

We don't have hard confirmation of problems at this time but want to warn sellers as soon as possible to proceed with caution. Let us know if you're experiencing any problems.

What do you expect to happen when you lay off your best IT people?

They get mad and sabotage the tech structure, sometimes even remotely.

Those $6 an hour nubs you replaced them with will do at least as much damage as professional hackers could ever dream of.

It's going to get A LOT worse.

What a surprise.  Another "glitch".

I took a screen cap  of that and posted it in a sellers group with a caption. ''Go Ahead,  Make My Day''

I was one of the unlucky who clicked on it the first time. I cannot believe they did it again. eBay is a website addicted to LSD.

I got opted in the first time, but after looking at what they offered, decided to try it, since initially wouldn't cost me anything for the trial.  I thought the French and German translations might be nice, but in 15 years, I've never sold anything to Spain and only twice to Italy.

Sold nothing.

They came back a month later, and said they were offering an extension.  Ok.  Still cost me nothing.

Sold nothing.

At one point, I had almost 3000 listings they could have duplicated on their other 6 sites, but never anything more than about 600 ever showed up.  Emailed them back and forth several times, and they said they didn't understand how so few had been listed, and they'd look into it.  Never did get any more listed.

Got an email from them this time, and I'm waiting to see if they can get their act together to list everything this time.  I don't think so, as I just had about 4000 listings end the other day, when they said the promotion was beginning and I see nothing listed.  Although this time, they DID say they'd only list 50% of my listings without a paid subscription to WebInterpret.

Still, applying that stipulation to the first promotion (even if not expressed), 600 is not 50% of 3000.

Not really much value to a translation service offering to translate American English to UK English or Australian English...

Especially when nothing sells anyway.

Deja glitch.

Bait for the only remaining eBay demographic; the stubborn optimist.

So...if anybody at ebay had half a brain, they would take it out and play with it.
Due to the one-sidedness of ebay's return policy, which leads to the seller paying return shipping from a foreign country, which could be $40+ for a 2 lb package (99% of what I ship), I have eliminated the international shipping option for all countries except Canada...and that's on a limited basis.
Oh...did I mention anything about ebay having a brain?

Beware
Even if you have not allowed Webinterpret to access your account:
I have found to my horror that my listings are live on at least EBAY UK
Even worse, it offers free shipping  to anywhere
Do yourself a favor and see if your listings are on EBays other sites
I even have designated no international shipping on my listings
I have a call into EPIG to find out how to stop them from displaying my products all over the world

@JC
Pulled up ebay.uk, and looked for one of my items that does NOT offer intl shipping...and there it was.
To further the insanity, a UK buyer CANNOT pull up shipping cost to the UK. The ONLY "ship to" option is the US.
This confirms my suspicion that ebay has ZERO experience standards for it's IT hires.
If you can confirm today's date...you're hired.

I intentionally opted in to webinterpret to list my items on the additional 6 sites as it generated quite a few sales the 1st time.  So now I have over 13,000 live listings and sales are good, including 3 today from international sites.  No problems here.

Update-
I was ttold by an American ebay rep:
your listings appear on all Ebay sites- but if an international buyers wants it, they have to ask if you would ship to their Country
and they could not buy it with free shipping.

I  think thats probably not true.
we'll see
in the meantime, I will cancel and refund any int'l orders

I got the email that if I did nothing some would go international. They did. Its bad enough that when I have unsold listings I have to be careful to only delete the International listings. GRRRRR Ebay.

After no activity, cloned international listings appeared sometime in September with no action on my part other than being conscripted into the initial May test. The My eBay window becomes almost unusable because it is not possible to filter by eBay site. I am not sure if the Seller Hub is any better because I don't use it.

Fortunately, the SixBit eCommerce solution ignores the cloned listings. After an unfortunate incident where a US buyer on HipStamp was billed in British pounds, HipStamp no longer includes the cloned listings in eBay Sync. I don't know what happens on other sites that clone eBay listings.
