Amazon Sellers Scramble to Retrieve Inventory from FBAforward

By: Ina Steiner

Amazon sellers have been scrambling for over a week to retrieve their inventory stranded in warehouses belonging to an FBA prepping and storage service that abruptly ceased operations. FBAforward posted a message on its homepage notifying sellers of its immediate closure.

Warning signs came as early as August 7th when a seller tweeted, "I paid you for my ocean freight 3 weeks ago, shipper says you never paid them & won't release my goods."

Sellers had used the company to accept inventory from overseas suppliers and prepare it for eventual shipment to Amazon FBA fulfillment centers. The company described its services as follows:

"FBAforward is a freight forwarding and inspection service that caters to Amazon FBA sellers. Importing products can be a hassle at best, and a nightmare at worst, but we're here to help. We'll take care of everything from working with a customs broker to get your products into the U.S. to inspecting, labeling, and forwarding them on to Amazon's warehouses for you."

In its letter to customers on its website that appears to have been posted sometime last week, possibly on August 9th, the company didn't provide a reason for the abrupt closure, writing in part: "We are saddened to announce that effective immediately, FBAforward will be closing its doors and will no longer be accepting orders through our facilities."

FBAforward recommended customers get in touch with a nearby company called ShipCalm to retrieve their inventory. Some sellers reported initial chaos at the FBAforward warehouses - one logistics company hired by an FBAforward client to retrieve its inventory reported that 2 of the 3 warehouses were accessible, but one was "locked down" because the rent had not been paid.

When we referenced that report in a message to FBAforward CEO Ryan Garrett, he referred to it as misinformation, but has not provided us with clarification as of yet.

It appears from the latest reports that ShipCalm may have stepped in to manage things at the warehouse. But a Reddit thread and a Facebook group set up by FBAforward customers called "FBAForward Closes" shows the sudden cessation of a vital service can be disruptive and costly.

Other FBA sellers who use prepping services may be unnerved by the report of FBAforward's demise. But looking for signs of potential trouble at a vendor on which you rely can be difficult - as late as May of this year, things appeared to be going well for the company when it announced it had moved to larger warehouses: "FBAforward has officially moved warehouse operations to a nearby warehouse, which more than doubles the warehouse space at the previous location."

We'll update this report if we hear back from FBAforward's Ryan Garrett.

Just another snake-oil, fly-by-night, make-a-quick-buck-off-the-gullible 21st Century newly invented third party middle-man type operation.

I am continually surprised anyone trusts ANY OF THEM considering their difficulties with the main webites we all have to deal with if we are to sell anything online these days, from eBay to Amazon and all the little leach-like clone operations that are almost pointless (Bonanza being a good example).

NONE of them could be trusted to hold your dog on a leash whilst you popped into the grocery store to buy a newspaper, why would you let them near your inventory, let alone store it?

Hello to all affected by this closure.  We (ShipCalm) have been working to get the situation under control, however, we did inherit quite a mess down there.

That said I wanted to clarify that we do in fact have access to all areas where Inventory was stored.  There are 2 locations where the 3rd party service providers might need payment to release goods, but we have an open line of communication around which goods are there and have negotiated releases for many customers already.

While we haven't been able to get everyone's questions answered as quickly as we would like we are making progress and we encourage customers to continue to send their inquiries to fbaforward@shipcalm.com so that we can try to resolve their issues.

I would also recommend staying updated with the stories of other folks who have insights on the "FBAforward Closes" facebook group that was organized by a few past customers.

New name (shipcalm), new scam (FBAforward failed but WE are better than that and can be trusted with your inventory).

Next year, a 're-brand' and another name, how about a more honest one like QuickBuck.

Oddly, people continually let themselves be.  'Tis a mystery to me.

Only an innocent newbie or a company too big to fail would trust Amazon or ebay with their inventory.  Listen to us old timers that's been a it for 20+ years. Neither of them can be trusted!

There is no easy road to success.... it takes work...

To think you can sit at a computer and buy, send to an 7nknown 3rd Party who then forwards to an FBA warehouse a properly packed , counted, and labeled item is like Russian roulette....

Heck... 8 don’t even come close to trusting FBA warehouses, let alone 3rd party providers 😩

Perhaps this why some of us have been in business since ecommerce started... we choose to control our own destiny and make a profit the old way, by hard work.

trouble in paradise?

that's what happens when you take the easy way out. I HAD an antique mall - sellers would rent a booth - put some stuff in it then come back in 30 days to get their check which btw was generally nothing. I'd tell them their booth was like a garden but they missed the whole concept. I'm quite sure there are some sellers stuck in this drama that did't deserve it but more than those few thought it was just an easy fix to hard work.

The real money is always in the con, the scam, the talked-up nothing, the 'I made a Million $, so can you, just buy my book and pay for updates on my website, and I'll show you how you can do it as well with just 1 hours work a week'.

Alas, as Barnum said, there seems to be one born every minute that'll fall for it.

When I see the walls of partially or never read self-help get-rich-quick books in the thrift stores I often wonder who the idiots were that bought them new...

Perhaps they're all so rich now they've generously donated them to Goodwill to help others join them cheaply, although I suspect the income tax break they get on their donation is the most they ever made from the $25 book.

In the tech age it's 'send us all your inventory and we'll do the rest' -

How many of these FBA sellers collect and remit sales tax in CA?  probably NONE..
