eBay Asks Users to Pitch In and Help on Discussion Boards

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is asking users to pitch in on the discussion boards to help people with questions by launching the Community Mentors Program. This follows on the heels of eBay's request for sellers to help it build its product catalog with the launch of the Product Experts Program (PEP).

Both moves come after eBay laid off employees in June and July as part of cost-cutting measures.

eBay CEO Devin Wenig acknowledged to Wall Street analysts on Wednesday that he has killed some programs after reporting another quarter of single-digit GMV growth.

One of the perks of becoming a community "mentor" under the new program is the "opportunity to shape new features for the Community." That is reminiscent of eBay's Voices program where users were provided information about new features in advance.

Other perks of the new program include:

-  Access to a private Mentor's Lounge where you can connect with peers.

- Direct access to eBay's Community team, including monthly video chats.

- An exclusive badge on your Community profile

- Invitations to exclusive events and opportunities

Among the qualifications: mentors must post using their eBay trading ID. Learn more about the program on this page.

We in the permanent ban club can't access that link.
Luckily, if not our ideas, ebay still accepts our fees.
Here's an idea anyway...put my fees into a fund for a new CEO search.

Devin is a dummy, he should be responding to the threads on the forums from the day he took over as CEO, he is too stupid and thinks he is 'too good' for the lowly sellers, but that time is past, no one wants to hear from the man and would like to see him fired.

In addition, they have banned the people with the best ideas that they had posting there, the forums are a massive flop just like Hal Lawton and Devin's Seller Hub, payments is the next folly that will put eBay right out of the marketplace business, sellers can't see it yet, but eBay payments will be Devin's last act.

So sad they had this... they had those of us who spent countless hours mentoring other sellers but pushed many of us away.
I even got told I was not welcome to post on the eBay Radio forum because I was a guru and it undermined their advice.
It is so sad what eBay has become.

I'll become an ebafia board mentor when

(1) ebafia restores Ending Soonest and eliminates Best Match

(2) when I can think of something nice to say about ebafia that's truthful

(3) when Devin and his entire crew of arrogant incompetents spend 24/7 with their families

Ebafia destroys businesses so why should I or other long time seller encourage a newbie so ebafia can ruin their fledgling business after their first six months of devious elevated search?

What chutzpah to even ask!

I was a Category Voice at one time.  I don't recall any time that they actually wanted to hear from us.  We told them a few things but I cannot remember any time that our input made any difference.  I was also very active in the so-called community until they threw that in the garbage.  I'm not sure I'd help them if they paid me, but I'm certain I wouldn't do it for free.

Ebay's "customer service" is already known to be generally rather poor, with in-house and off-shore reps both equally clueless to the directionless organizational, policy, and functional site update hoops Wenig has his lemmings jump through.

Although I don't have any specific knowledge or confirmation of this, with eBay's recent headcount reductions, it's near certain eBay's service and support organizations were impacted. They are almost always some of the first to go in G&A cost-cutting punchlist.

Whether support heads were cut or not, eBay still has the problem of the social and community team unable to keep up with the constant demand for help in the community forums.

What better way to address this problem than to outsource 1st-tier support to unpaid volunteers.

If Wenig has no shame in asking his seller-customer base to build his catalogue gratis, why should he have any compunction to ask community members to provide "free" member support in exchange for some cool community emoji badges, after all eBay believes their expert sellers' time is far too valuable to be compensated by mere token financial gifts.

Almost 3 months ago, back in early May I wrote,

~~~~~~~~~~~
"I have it on good authority that eBay recently retained an outside consultancy to assist with their history of internal implementation and execution challenges (kudos for someone in eBay having a modicum of organizational self-awareness).
As a huge, bloated organization with many levels of executive and middle-management with ambiguous and often overlapping titles, eBay shareholders and BOD need to pin accountability on Wenig and the C-team when projects go sideways like this one's headed.
If this is Wenig's baby, he should be directly serving as the executive sponsor and stakeholder for eBay's structured data and catalog initiative.  Wenig should be accountable for its results.
This may mean he may have to miss one or two public speaking engagements and take a few less trips on his learjet, but this isn't something that can be abdicated (even to another C-level).
This, of course, will never happen."
~~~~~~~~~~~

Since then of course the CTO has been demoted and the wunderkind "golden boy" CPO (as Ina described him) "genius" behind the marketplace product development is no longer with eBay.

Wenig is the one with accountability. He can only sacrifice so many lambs before he's held responsible for his impotent leadership

Still, eBay remains completely undisciplined in terms of project and product execution and accountability. Wenig in particular (and notably Tarman) seem to view themselves as social justice warriors first, large-cap internet company executives 2nd.

Unfortunately that demeanor likely mirrors that of from Omidyar and Tierney, who perhaps view themselves as superior beings whose philanthropic endeavors seemingly justify their means (of Wenig's stewardship of eBay).

Ebay desperately needs a new senior leadership team. It needs a team with discipline, focus and a track record of getting things done.

eBay needs a CEO who spends the company's money as if it were his or her very own. It needs a chief executive who views and appreciates eBay's seller-customer composition and is unafraid to embrace and cultivate those strengths, rather than aping Amazon and funneling cash and product development to China to compete with US seller-customers.

This is Devin's way of reconnecting with small sellers, funny the dude said that 3 years ago and has never once posted on his own forums where he could actually connect with sellers.

What is he going to do, unban all the great sellers who they gave lifetime bans to because the shills kept reporting their posts to get them banned because they could never win a debate on facts and truth?

The forums are a mess because they allowed unnamed shills who posted under fake names like Brian Burke stalk real sellers.

Now they want to be upfront and run a forum right after all these years and make sellers post under real ID's after they banned all the best sellers who posted under real ID's for life.

Having a dummy like Alan who wants Burke's job when he gets canned is simply a continuation of the same forum fraud that Burke has engaged in for years posting under fake names like Good Luck Selling.

@FidoMaster

I am sure that Ebay has already made significant cuts to their offshore CSR's.  However since those are outside contractors who hire their own employees those layoffs will never be reflected on Ebays books or in their releases.

Heck it is hard enough to get Ebay to announce their own layoffs, let alone what happens with an outside contractor.

@mazelgirl

They hide them as much as possible  and try to force people over to facebook where they can delete and block posts a lot easier than they can on their forums.  Many times the posts come back to haunt Ebay years later when they try to deny things and on FB they can get rid of the problem a lot easier and faster.

Customer Service in Draper claims ebafia just hired and is currently training 44 new domestic CSRs who are scheduled to begin sometime in August.

Just in time for Great Payments Disaster. Instead of anchor store owners waiting 45 minutes to speak to an agent, it likely will take 90 minutes once this patently illegal and draconian backward looking SNAD/INR policy kicks in along the payments fiasco.

EBay, you need help with the catalog and boards?  Then hire competent people to do that.  And dump the time-wasting Seller Hub.  eBay has been intentionally reducing the effectiveness of various myeBay pages to force sellers into SH.  For example the new Active Selling page has no way to select one category of listings, AND, a suggestion by eBay to goto SH.  I have a better goto for eBay and you can probably guess...

Silver Ice King, this will be another excuse to delete the entire forum database as they have many times already each time they switch to a new format.

Remember the thread, 'eBay has server problems and they are not telling anyone' ?

Well, that entire forum and the thread disappeared one day and went somewhere along with AOL and Netscape.

Sure it is true, they have deleted entire forum databases, like I said, show me the thread that was running for a year and a half that I mentioned in my last post, they locked it and banned the author, then reformated the forum and it was no where to be found.

So Ebay lays off a bunch of people and now wants the Sellers and Buyers to once again start helping on the Community Boards after doing all they could to DESTROY  the Community.  Donohoe completely destroyed what used to be a vibrant active community that helped each other and actually helped Ebay, because he thought he knew better than anybody else what Ebay needed.  What they really should have done is hire the Monkey that Meg Whitman recommended because there is no way the results could have been worse.

When Jeff left, Ebay had a chance to bring in a New, Great team that could have once again tried to build what Ebay needed and what Wenig said he was going to do.  But instead they rewarded Alan who single handedly  destroyed the UK boards to where nobody could or would say much of anything to do the same to the US boards.  The only problem with all of this was that Alan had the ego bigger than the CEO and thought he knew it all when in fact he was so poorly versed in Ebay rules and policies all he did was quickly alienate himself from everybody and then shut his PM's off, set up the community team email and shove everybody off on his underlings because he couldn't handle the reality that he was clueless as to how to deal with the US boards.

So between he and Karen they decided to revise the boards after asking for all of our comments on what we would like to see.  There were a lot of good, thoughtful comments posted on that thread and when Ebay suddenly, without warning installed the revised program (making it sound as if they had done all this work when in fact all they did was try to utilize options that Jeff had never gotten around to) they had completely ignored every single comment that had been made.  The changes made the boards almost useless to most for close to 2-3 months almost succeeding with Alans goal.

But they neglected to tell Kupbens fact that the community hated it and when Ebay's brand new public spokesperson made the big announcement about the changes, the response to his blog was so horrendous that Ebay had to turn off the comments after just a few hours.  Two days later he walked out on the chat after 15 minutes where he was the guest speaker responding to questions about this great new version of the boards because nobody prepared him for how negative the response was going to be.

Unfortunately only Karen paid the price with her job  since she was the boss, but it was as much Alan as Karen as he was gloating about destroying the vibrant community that was no longer able to function at even half the level it had previously been able to. He dragged his feet on repairing things as long as possible until he was forced to work the overtime necessary to shut the ''NOISE'' up as Kupbens had no idea what he was in for when he started with EBay and just how unhappy its customers were and the culture of lying to anybody and everybody.

Now fast forward a few years and a few more changes to the community boards that once again drove off many of the truly great posters who have never come back.  Then to have to watch Alan turn a blind eye to his hand picked cheerleaders who pull the high school mean girl tricks on any posters that dare not agree with their advice is ridiculous.  These cheerleaders only mention policies which benefit Ebay rather than truly helping the OP out with the real rules that Ebay lower level supervisors like Alan choose not to enforce or advocate.  From personal experience the Buyer adding a name to their account to get around a Sellers Block is one that Ebay will actually enforce if you are able to get past the CSRs or Community Team.  Then Alan Permanently Bans a lot of these true helpers because the mean girls gang up on them and when they are backed into a corner with the real rules and policies they run to daddy to tattle and get the person with the correct information banned.

So now Ebay is basically limited to only those ''mentors'' who are hand picked by Alan as Cheerleaders as most of the other great advisors have either been permanently banned  for challenging Alans ego, even though they were almost always correct, but were banned for made up excuses or mis-interpretations of what was said just because Alan can do it.  There are no appeals of his decision unless unless you know somebody higher up and those that do usually seem to win because his decisions are so bad.  He must have something on either Burke or Wenig or both as he should have been deported a long time ago, and now we are supposed to help him keep his job???????

Sorry Ebay but you are a few years too late and a lot of dollars short to get the true helpers to VOLUNTEER their time for your benefit.   If  you leave the Community Team Management unchanged it just shows that this is nothing more than another con game to try and save a few dollars so the CEO can still try and get his annual Christmas present that Ebay tries to shamelessly call a performance bonus.

Now we are supposed to work for free so they can hopefully show the support of the Customers and drive the price back up just before they sell off for their next quarterly round of profits.  I really hope that the SEC starts looking at all the sales the executives seem to make a day or two before announcing news they know is going to deflate the stock.  I seem to remember that being called insider trading and it shouldn't matter how many shares it is when they sell the stock for a higher price to a new owner who has no idea about the information they know is going to be released the next day.
