eBay CEO Devin Wenig Announces Bilingual Customer Service

eBay CEO Devin Wenig took to Twitter to announce that the company has rolled out bilingual customer service in the US. 

"Our US customer service organization is now fully enabled to take phone, email and chat in Spanish language for our customers who would prefer to contact us that way," he tweeted on Sunday afternoon.

‏eBay customer service has often come under fire by sellers in particular.

Ebay needs to provide on-shore US-based service reps to store subscribers.  

They also have very poor internal communication (as documented internet-wide). Service reps are generally clueless about the goings-on related to critical site changes, marketing programs and various "testing" activities affecting paying seller customers.

Move along folks.... nothing to see here.

Another eBay announcement that is driven solely by the need to keep Wall Street analysts engaged and talking positively about the company.

The fact is eBay should have been offering customer service to all sellers using reps that are dedicated to that sellers in their country all along.

As others have pointed out, eBay customer service reps are woefully uninformed, an issue that is only exasperated when users can not speak to a rep who natively speaks that individuals language.

Making an announcement that reps will now be available to those who speak Spanish is not an advancement or enhancement as eBay is merely catching up with something that should have been in place on day one.

Ha ha ha...hilarious.  They should get some customer reps that can speak English.  The anti-American mentality of this company is beyond me.  After lying, breaking promises and putting lots of small American companies out of business this is their idea of the month?  

Calling all Millennials..its time to take the internet away from these jerks!  Marketplaces are prime for the taking now.

So now they can spout the same lies and incorrect information in multiple languages.  How Devin of them to be so considerate of their sellers.  This probably also means they will be moving the CS from their international companies to one service center to once again cut down on costs as Ebay does not do anything that does not save money or generate another income stream.

They had already discussed charging for CS calls in the past so maybe this will be coming out in the Summer Seller Update.  Every time you contact CS you will be charged $2 or whatever number they come up with to cover all of their costs, but to also show an increase in Gross Revenue so they can show additional growth.

With all of the glitches that keep occurring and forcing sellers to contact CS this would be the perfect opportunity to generate additional income for Ebay as sellers would have to contact them to have the errors corrected.  That would be a pure Devin way of thinking and operating a company.

CSRs can barely speak English; how are they going to communicate in Spanish? I guess they're going to be using an app that hears the Spanish and then automatically translates to English, which will most likely result in lots of misinformation being given out.

As for what improvements could be made to customer service, how about training the CSRs so they actually know the policies and workings of eBay listings and can accurately communicate that to sellers/buyers, not just reading off a script, or doing a "find" in the TOS. If there's a problem, they need to take substantive action and see that issues are resolved quickly.

The last two times I called customer service, I was given information that had absolutely nothing to do with my problem, and it was obvious I knew more about eBay than they did. That needs to change.

Many people in the Philippines speak Spanish as a 2nd language. . .

Big thumbs up to eBay for helping Latino customers communicate better with customer service reps.

I wonder when they'll offer some sort of Chinese translators for our Far East friends?

I think it is wonderful that Ebay is adding CSRs that speak Spanish.  We have a large Latino population in the USA and think it is long overdue.

You all do realize that we have had Latinos as part of the US for a very long time, right?!?!?!  Puerto Rico is part of the US as well.

I think it is LONG overdue to include the CSRs that can speak Spanish.  We have lots of US Citizens that are Latino.

@geoffreymason - I totally agree with you. If I moved to Mexico, I certainly wouldn't expect everyone to start talking in English to me; I'd need to learn to speak Spanish if I wanted to talk with people.
