eBay Upsets Buyers over Flash Sale Snafu

By: Ina Steiner

eBay extended its latest buyer promotion by 3 hours after a glitch on Friday, but many buyers complained they were never able to take advantage of the promised savings. The flash sale offered buyers 15% off on orders greater than $50 on Friday between 8 am - 4 pm PT, and eBay later extended the promotion until 7 pm PT.

It appears eBay was aware of the problem, posting on Facebook at 4 pm PT: "Extended to 7PM PT. Today only! The savings are strong with this one." But we could find no official announcement about the problem or how eBay proposed to make it right for disappointed shoppers.

eBay did respond to a buyer with the following tweet in it which it seemed to blame PayPal for the problem:

@AskeBay
Hey there - sorry for the delay! Yes, PayPal did report that there was an issue with checkout on eBay yesterday, and it has since been resolved. Were you able to make the payment? ~Tyler S.
10:24 AM - 5 May 2018

eBay had advertised the promotion in a post on its discussion boards on Friday morning but never returned after users began reporting problems.

One buyer said the issue cost them a savings of $70 - "I am very upset and disappointed. It seems like a bait and switch situation where the coupon doesn't work and they hope you'll go ahead and buy the stuff anyway."

eBay promos have been beset by problems of late - in fact, sellers are struggling with a major snafu involving international listings as we speak.

Buyers are also complaining about another technical issue: they are unable to sort search results by time on the eBay Mobile App - people are complaining loudly on Twitter and in the App store. Avid users often sort results by "Time ending soonest" and "Newly listed" and are clearly frustrated at the loss of functionality.

An eBay moderator addressed one buyer's complaint on Twitter: "Sorry for the trouble! This is not intended, and our mobile team is investigating this issue as we speak. Thanks for the heads up. If you need to sort your search results, you can use the eBay site as a workaround for the time being.

Hmmmm........run a promotion.....coupon code. Parameters? X min $ amount and exclude 3 or 4 categories. EASY! LOL. Well, easy for 99% of the business world with a website. We save that last 1% for the bay.

Again I did not receive the email originally nor did I receive the update. If people are complaining they did not receive the discount they I guess I am glad I did not receive it then having to waste my time with the BS CSR's and time IS money.

Ebay and their "glitches" used to be once in a while, then every few months, then monthly, then weekly, now everyday, even several times a day. Yea, this must be their idea of a "tech company". This company is melting down faster than a snow cone in summer. I know it has always been glitchy, but this is ridiculous. Way to go Ebay, you've pis*ed off your sellers for years, now you're pis*ing off the buyers. Keep on Devil Devin, your days are numbered at Ebay. Its time for you to go RUIN and DISRUPT GM.

1. More eBay glitches. How are they going to pull off payments?

2. With an eBay sitewide percent-off flash sale running an average of every 11 days in 2018, buyers are becoming conditioned to wait for a sale in order to make discretionary purchases (especially larger discretionary ones). On top of the sitewide percent-off flash sales, eBay has also run eBay bucks and $15 off $75 buyer promos.

3. If eBay continues buyer flash sales at this rate, they will soon become background noise, and like many mattress stores and used car dealerships, a running joke about never-ending “sales”.

4. eBay missed Q1 revenue targets by a (comparatively) small margin of $10 million, even with running 4 sitewide flash sales in Q1.  If eBay continues at this pace in Q2 it may struggles continue for Q2.

5. Every seller pays into funding these sales, but fewer sellers benefit from them.  With the buyer “sweet spot” of several hundred dollars, these coupons and sales are meant to boost ASP and thus, provide the biggest boost to sellers with items priced in the hundreds. It is not difficult to imagine gaming consoles, iPhone and android mobile phones, Dyson vacuums, etc. all getting a disproportionate boost from these sales.

6. These sitewide “buyer facing promotions” are booked under sales and marketing expense. eBay spent $756 million in sales and marketing in Q1 (yes, you read that right -- over 3/4 of a BILLION dollars). I am hopeful an analyst will peel back the onion on the Q2 earnings call and find out what these sitewide eBay/seller-sponsored coupons are costing the company and the sellers.

7. eBay reports GMV values in pre-discount dollars. Thus, my assumption is eBAy is reporting full, original, pre-flash sale coupon dollars as GMV (it would be helpful if we could get a hard confirmation on this).

FidoMaster asks: "How are they going to pull off payments?"

I think anyone with connected brain cells realizes that the eBay Payments is going to be one huge mess based on the "glitches" which happen now on a daily basis. And eBay won't be able to blame PayPal when sellers are screaming.

Spend 15% to make 10%...when will somebody pull back the covers?
Maybe it's like the old Change Store on SNL...they make it on volume.

eBay payments is not about anything beyond

1) making the extra %1 or 2 that they used to give to Paypal

2) re instituting the float that Paypal was ordered by the courts NOT to do ('we are separate companies the ruling didnt apply to us)

3) control over sellers - you can bet all the too small leather jackets that DW can wear - that "people who do not comply with eBay returns procedures will be considered HIGH RISK and therefore be subject to longer money hold times".

Its gonna be a LONG HOT SUMMER for eBay sellers

''people who do not comply with eBay returns procedures will be considered HIGH RISK...''

Of course.  That's wholly consistent with eBay's corporate culture of blatent hypocrisy, considering how risky eBay is to sell on in the first place, despite the future potential for additional exposure to more.

Pace, don't you know that they are cheaper in the Boys Department?  Boys Jumbo XXL?  What else would you expect Donahoe's wing man to wear?

And look, they've added a new scapegoat to their plate.  It's not just the sellers anymore, it's PayPal.

geoffreymason, it appears an evil alien reptile creature disguised as a human has done something with Fido.
I hope it's only temporary and I shall see what can be done.
