The internet is filling up with reports that Amazon has closed accounts of customers. Initially we were cautious given that today is April Fool's Day and the fact that Amazon has been in the spotlight due to attention from the President of the United States of America.
The reports began a few days ago and are found on Reddit, Down Detector, Facebook, and Twitter (hashtag #AmazonClosed).
user reported the following issue 3 days ago, with other users reporting similar issues:
"Woke up and couldn't log in. Said my email address didn't exist. Could still use the app on my phone. Called and they said account was closed, but no reason or who or why. Must be a glitch as I see a lot of posts stating the same thing. On the phone now and he's submitting a form to reopen it."
On Friday, a customer created a group on Facebook called the Amazon Account Closure Discussion Group. By Sunday evening, there were 1,333 members.
We reached out to Amazon this evening, and a spokesperson provide us with the following statement: "Customer trust is one of Amazon's top priorities. To protect that trust, we take a number of actions, including closing accounts that have violated our policies. If a customer has a question about their account, we recommend they contact Customer Service so we can investigate and take appropriate action."
Indications are that Amazon believes bad actors may be behind the social media campaign and its systems are secure.
We found no reports of such problems on the Amazon seller boards. As an Amazon customer, have you experienced an unexpected account closure? As an Amazon seller, what do you think?
