eBay is removing guides, which are user-generated handbooks that helped bring buyers to its marketplace; topics run the gamut from identifying fake purses to safely packing guitars for shipment.
Some sellers think eBay's decision to remove guides from its site is a ploy to force more sellers to advertise through Promoted Listing Ads. And indeed, eBay implied that was the case in its letter to authors when it said:
"If you've used guides to help bring buyers to your listings, we offer sellers even more effective ways to generate traffic. Learn how promoted listings and Promotions Manager will help you drive velocity."
eBay suggested authors save their guides before it removes them from its site on April 12, and it suggested authors publish them elsewhere:
"To keep your guides published on the web, consider transferring them to a web publishing platform, such as Wordpress or Blogger."
Some authors of such guides have already expressed an interest in publishing them on the EcommerceBytes site.
We're open to creating a special section on the site powered by WordPress and would like to hear your ideas. Would you be interested in publishing your guides on EcommerceBytes?
If so, would you be doing so in order to drive traffic to your listings/store on eBay or elsewhere (through a link in the guide)? Or would you be doing so to help inform others (one user said they considered them as a way to help pay it forward rather than as a traffic builder).
Would you be interested in reading user-generated guides on the EcommerceBytes site? What topics would you be interested in writing about and/or reading?
Whatever the case, many eBay users have invested time to produce helpful guides on numerous topics, and they have less than 5 weeks to save their guides before eBay deletes them. If that's you, act fast - eBay advises: "Backing them up to your computer is as simple as copying and pasting them into new text documents."
UPDATE: We're looking for some beta testers for a new Guides section on this site. Email ina@ecommercebytes.com letting me know you are interested in submitting a guide, and in the next day or two, I'll send you instructions. Thanks for the feedback!
