eBay Is Overcharging Sellers Today

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is charging sellers for listings that should be free. "It's 5PM on February 28th, I have 47 of 50 free listings still available (and a ton of new store offers that don't apply), and (eBay's) trying to charge me insertion fees on anything that I select to relist," a reader reported on Ecommerce EKG.

The eBay boards also contain reports of the same problem - one seller did a roundup of discussions about the problem on this thread.

An eBay moderator thanked the seller and said he would "send another report to our developers with the information you've provided here."

Another seller said eBay wasn't just overcharging for insertion fees - "The system is trying to charge me the 30 cent insertion fee to REVISE a listing as well. Definitely, a serious bug here. It started about 5 hours ago, while I was listing."

Another seller noted that eBay failed to provide a notice to sellers about the problem - "My systems status page is all green - "all services in good health,"" the seller said.

A couple of sellers suggested eBay provide a universal credit of additional listings to make up for the problem.

On WHAT PLANET would giving FREE listings be an OFF-SET for Charging for what is FREE and OverCharging for other things where the CHARGE is carved DEEPLY in stone?   REFUNDS are in order.. OK, via CREDITS back to each and EVERY account for the overcharges.  I did not see THIS ONE today, but I have noticed that the FOOL "BOLD CHARGE" if you wanted to be "seen" in search has been $1 $2 or $4 .... all seeming at random.

This is only the beginning. They can't get it right on a normal day. Imagine what the next year or so will look like with all of the changes that they are planning.

They are messing with the fees in preparation for announced changes. Programming is done on the live system so changes are immediate and noticeable. If you are seeing those charges then it would seem the programming is a success and is working as expected.

These things appear to be glitches, when they aren't glitches at all. I am sure this is only the beginning.

I found it refreshing that custserv knew exactly what I was talking about when I reported the problem on my end. The glitch took hours to clear up and was fully operational by the end of the day. I'm more accustomed to reporting issues whereby the eBay representative has "no idea" what the problem could be.

"Desperately seeking Money"

I had an item that paypal kicked out the payment - fraud - international buyer.  Problem? ebay kept telling me to ship the item because it was paid. I couldn't file a non-pay - ebay system would not allow me. Don't they talk to each other anymore? I called c/s and was told I had to wait 7 days.  Ok - already filed for the label void - haven't seen that credit yet.

Meanwhile I let things go on ebay's end. Actually waited 10+ days - tried to again file the non-pay - system wouldn't allow me to and again told me to ship.  Called ebay again.  Talked to someone in some foreign country (guy) who I told the entire story to again.  He apologized and said ebay would issue a credit within 24 hours.  Great - went on my way.

Wait another week - no credit. Now I'm pissed. It was an $8 credit.  Sorry that ebay thinks $8 isn't important to me - it is.  Call back again and speak to another rep and now I'm sorry to say I'm not nice.

This rep kicks me to a "supervisor" I have to yet again explain the whole damm problem and she agrees to issue the appropriate credit this time. AND does it while we are on the phone so the 2nd dude could have done it as well.  Does ebay instruct them  not to do it hoping that the seller will just give up?

Did I mention that it was before the end of the month and I told the supervisor that I would be filing a chargeback with my American Ex card for the $8? That's when I got the credit.

The whole thing was just ridiculous from the gitgo since paypal could have simply informed ebay that the payment was fraud.

Several days, last weeks, when I sent to revise, or, sell similar... I encountered the .30
I simply logged off & went & worked on my other sites.
There are SO MANY reasons, daily, to NOT list on FeeBay.

The biggest problem with EBay is there is no one you can contact to resolve a problem. Customer service always has to check with someone any time I have a problem. If the problem needs a follow up you do not have a name or number.

Whenever EBay sends a dispatch there is never an opportunity to address the sender. Even the surveys say they cannot respond. go to CS.

Why can't EBay have 1 day a month when users can access someone with power who will be required to take action if the complaint or suggestion is valid?

Years ago, EBay Live enabled users to attend a convention and meet with those in authority.

AS OF THIS MORNING, MARCH 3, EBAY IS STILL CHARGING FOR REVISIONS. I think that it is deliberate.

I have been with EBay almost from the start. I honestly believe it is incompetence rather than malevolence. EBay tries to isolate themselves from buyers and sellers. Thus for anything that matters to us we must go through Customer Service. When they want to contact you they anonymously go directly to you (you never able to respond). This isolatation through insolation prevents EBay personnel from knowing the problems of its users. Little things that can easily be tweaked, have to be repeated enough times by enough CS reps going to the right place for any action to be taken. It really is a most inefficient and incompetent approach.

Was looking at my eBay invoice today for February and I had a charge on there for the added shipping for an item I sent to Australia.
I have free shipping to the US and everyone else has to pay an extra fee. I had other International sales last month but it only happened on that one deal which was shipped on the 23rd. It was not a lot of money, only $0.24, but if it is happening on others it can add up.
eBay is out stealing again so everyone should check their invoices. Another reason I am slowly migrating to other platforms since I can not have time wasted checking for errors and making phone calls to repair them.
Time is money and they are stealing my time and my money.

For some reason EBay splits the charge to sellers. They charge me 10% on the item's sale price. They also separately charge me 10% of the postage/shipping I charge the buyer. I have no idea why they do this.

In fairness I can understand them charging fees on shipping. A seller can offer an item at $10 with free shipping. Another seller can offer the same item for $1 and $9 shipping. It would be unfair if those sellers paid different EBay fees. In the end the seller has to build shipping and EBay/PayPal fees into the selling cost or go broke.

I hate having to check EBay fees in 2 places.

I have  found their fee treatment for foreign and domestic shipping to be the same.

Warzak,

You are not supposed to be charged for foreign shipping. Only for domestic and that is why we add the shipping to the price and call it free shipping so we do not have to deal with the double fees to keep track of it.
