Holiday Delivery Gets Silly

By: Ina Steiner

Customers count on their packages to arrive in time for Christmas, and online sellers take delivery dates seriously. But this holiday season, things also got a little silly.

From glitter bombs to dancing drivers, the normally mundane topic of holiday delivery is getting the viral treatment. Interspersed with stories about disappointed customers whose packages were late or stolen from their porch were some lighthearted tales.

People have shared photos on social media of baskets of snacks they left for delivery drivers. (Just how many packages do those kind-hearted people receive during the holidays?!)

And then there was the UPS delivery driver who did a happy dance when dropping off packages that was captured on a video doorbell. The Indiana couple posted the video online to share their amusement.

But topping them all was the video posted to YouTube made by a former NASA engineer who created a sophisticated glitter bomb trap for porch thieves. It's a long video, but highly entertaining. For all those who've ever been impacted by stolen packages, it might make your day. "I'll take your entire stock" (of glitter-bomb traps) wrote one commentor.

Whatever did we do before YouTube and social media?

Here's hoping all your packages arrive in your customers' hands safe and sound, and let's hope they don't come back to you like a holiday-return boomerang. Maybe the NASA engineer could come up with a solution to "rental shopping."

I've been a subscriber of Mark Rober's channel on Youtube for about a year now.

He does some really neat things, one of my favorites besides the glidder bomb is the massive horn he built out in the desert. . .

NO sympathy for THIEVING Porch Pirates, but FLIPSIDE is that this is a Cut-and-Dried/STONE COLD Booby Trap.   IF any injuries were to result the SETTER of any such Booby Trap could be the TARGET of Civil or Criminal results.   Just imagine if the THIEF tripped the "Glitter Bomb" while still driving and in a moment of shock/panic yanks the steering wheel to the LEFT and CRASHES HEAD ON an innocent car full of Moms and Children going the OTHER way.   Stops being a JOKE awfully quickly, doesn't it?

Want to discourage porch pirates from your neighborhood?  No high-tech wizardry needed; simply save a few enticing product cartons or retailer-branded boxes.... create fake shipping labels (make sure your address isn't on the box to prevent retaliation)...

Fill the box with soiled diapers, used cat litter, or dog poop.  Seal up the box carefully so as to disguise the fact that it's been 'recycled'.  Place in conspicuous area and wait for the opportunity to educate the turd-burglar.
