Seller Boycott Against Amazon Unit Succeeds

Antiquarian booksellers banded together to protest a decision by Amazon's AbeBooks marketplace, a rare show of solidarity among independent third-party sellers that worked - at least for now, resulting in apologies and concessions.

The booksellers boycotted AbeBooks after it announced with short notice during the holiday shopping season that it planned to close its site to sellers from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, and South Korea.

As we reported, hundreds of booksellers from many different countries participated in "Banned Booksellers Week" that kicked off on November 5, 2018, suspending millions of listings on the AbeBooks marketplace.

In writing about the latest development today, BoingBoing noted, "Despite the victory, the lesson that some booksellers have taken away from the event is that Amazon does not have their interests at heart and that their efforts should be focused on selling off of Amazon's platform."

Efforts by the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers were instrumental in helping booksellers band together. In a post on Thursday, it wrote:

"In a meeting on 7th November 2018 between ILAB and AbeBooks, an agreement was reached to reinstate the affected booksellers by allowing to trade under current conditions until 31st December 2018 and offering a solution to trade beyond that time indefinitely.

"AbeBooks assured the representatives of ILAB that they will do everything they can to continue support the booksellers."

The boycott demonstrated the power sellers can wield when working together, but nevertheless, it was a rare feat.

I would hardly think it was any kind of a victory. Come December 31 that so called victory will be a big fat lost.

Willing to bet if it had been in the spring or summer the so called victory would never of happen. Enjoy while you have it come Dec 31 its gone. And Ebay could care less about you and your so called books.

sasikat9:

This news is related to Amazon, not eBay...

Books are far more important than you seem to think!  That's why there's a dedicated platform for antique printed matters. ;-)
