Etsy Spotlights Sale Items in New Test Banners

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy is reminding shoppers of items they may want by running new banners as part of a test. The banners advertise listings that are in buyers' shopping cart, on sale, have free shipping, or are selling quickly.

Here's how Etsy described the new test that kicked off on October 1st:

Type: Testing a banner alerting buyers about items they may be interested in

What we're testing: We're showing a banner to buyers on the Etsy.com that advertises listings that are in their cart and are on sale, have free shipping, or are selling quickly.

Goal: To inspire buyers to add items to their cart and complete purchases.

Audience: A percentage of buyers on Etsy

Start Date: October 2018

It may be a good idea to remind shoppers they have items in their carts, but some sellers may not be as enthusiastic about the focus on sales, free shipping, and ready-made goods (in the case of handmade items).

We haven't seen the new banners, let us know what you think of the concept, and feel free to email screenshots if you encounter them (ina@ecommercebytes.com).

It's a little pink box below the listing on the search page that says something like ''Popular Item''.

Very understated, not much of a 'banner' as far as I see.

I checked out a few of the listings with the banner, and I can't see that they'd sold all that many of the item, so I'm not sure how Etsy determined what's 'popular'.

I'm not clear this is going to do that much to drive or convert sales.

Sounds like yet another step in Etsy's ''drive to the bottom'' encouraging a bottom feeding bargain conscious class of buyer who are more at home on garage sales.

Etsy lost its way a long time ago and has introduced more and more policies to kick genuine artisans, sellers of  true vintage and international sellers in the teeth. Only wanted are the resellers with shops stocked up with Chinese crap or copywrite infringed items.

The muppets from so-called ''marketplace integrity'' are seemingly blind, deaf and dumb to the real rule breakers while hapless sellers with one or two infringing items in their shop get snitched on and persecuted.

The push for streamlining customers is annoying to me.  Test marketing in October is frustrating beyond words!

Etsy needs to focus on improving the flow of the site and NOT on gimmicks of customer manipulation.  Educated shoppers know what they want. Etsy needs to make the platform as seamless as possible.

Free shipping is not free and every body knows it.
These new trends hurt sellers by focusing on shops who fit one type of mold only.
