Reality TV Meets Crafting Thanks to Amy Poehler

Call it "Survivor" for crafters - the website Deadline says a new reality TV program will tackle crafters in a series called "The Handmade Project."

Actor/comedian Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live, Parks and Recreation) and Nick Offerman (also of the TV sitcom Parks and Recreation) will host the series for NBC.

"Each week eight all-around makers, from all walks of life, will take on a series of projects with the hopes of impressing Poehler, Offerman and our expert judges," Deadline writes.

eBay in its heyday helped spawn shows about collecting, picking, antiquing, and auctioneering, indicating that The Handmade Project may be the first of other shows about crafting.

The series could be good for Etsy, Amazon Handmade, and other online marketplaces, and it will be interesting to see if Etsy advertises its forthcoming "Etsy Studio" marketplace for craft supplies on the show.

Any artisans/crafters like to chime in on what your ideal reality show would be like and who you'd like to see host? And would you show off your skills on national television?

I hate TV shows like this because it breeds 10090000000s of amateurs flooding sites with crap.

"The Handmade Project may be the first of other shows about crafting."

The first? Don't tell Martha Stewart that. After her head explodes the woman who turned an orange jump suit into a luxe Euro pillow sham will take someone down.

TV is about ratings, not 'reality'.  They're in business to sell commercial time.

And what brings ratings?  Outrageousness.

I would submit that most craft projects (and crafters) are much more serious and methodical than the flash and guilded facade the producers prefer to 'manufacture' so to attract sponsors.

Hosted by a comedian?  That should be a big clue, no?

Amy Pohler & Nick Oppeman as judges of crafters and their projects... maybe someone can explain their qualifications?

No wonder NBC is often called the Nothing But Carp network.

@Ric: I don't know about Amy Poehler, but Nick Offerman is a top-notch woodworker who builds boats, furniture and other nice things. He wrote a book and put out a DVD about woodworking, so I'd say he's qualified and entertaining as well.

This is far from the first or ground breaking. HGTV has had many shows of the exact same format. Tori Spelling had one too. It would be nice if someone came up with a unique craft show idea

Bring back Joe and Ed, The Furniture Guys!

I've been a crafter for going on five decades and know firsthand that most crafts are time and labor intensive so it'll be interesting to see the what the projects are that form the challenges.
