Crafts Chainstore A.C. Moore Invests in Etsy Alternatives

Retailers continue to worry about the impact of online marketplaces on their sales, and the crafts industry is no different. The Philadelphia Inquirer said crafts chainstore A.C. Moore acquired Blitsy and invested in Zibbet.

A.C. Moore executive Anthony Piperno told the newspaper the deals were completed last week, quoting him: "Both will facilitate and propel our business going forward, and are part of the growth trajectory for A.C. Moore ... to create the most dynamic platform throughout the arts-and-crafts do-it-yourself industry."

Chain Store Age reported A.C. Moore's parent company secured an exclusive partnership "as part of a major investment in handcraft marketplace Zibbet, a marketplace of some 50,000 independent artists, crafters and vintage collectors."

In addition to the threat Amazon posed by launching Amazon Handmade, Etsy may also have given concern to brick-and-mortar stores when it ramped up its supplies category with the launch of Etsy Studio.

Have you used Blitsy, Zibbet, or other alternatives such as ArtFire and the newer marketplace Artyah?

Very interesting.  Looks like they're trying to hit Etsy where they live.  I don't really understand why they would invest in Zibbet however.  What's the point?

From the Zibbet Page :
"When you make a sale on Zibbet, payments are sent directly to you.

You can accept credit cards (powered by Stripe), PayPal, or both. Currently, all sellers must accept PayPal if they want to appear within the Zibbet marketplace.

If you don't yet have a PayPal account, you can get one for free, here."

So, they just recently added Stripe, my preference.
You just can't use it if you want your stuff to show on Zibbet.

How Stupid.

The only reason I can see for a Zibbet takeover, is for a company that wants an “Etsy Mirror”.  I was already mad enough at Etsy, to start a Zibbet account early on, and hope for success on their part.  The really disappointing thing about Zibbet, was that they were TOO MUCH like Etsy.  Same white on white, severe lack of categories, poor policing of sellers cheating on handmade, or fake vintage.  Apparently way underfunded.  Rumors about Mgmt / Ownership issues.....

BUT, if you read the Etsy boards, there are really FEW complaints about Etsy, that AREN'T legitimate.  The Boards are a VIRTUAL ROADMAP to do an ANTIQUE / VINTAGE site.  If a company liked the layout of Etsy, they could just buy Zibbet, institute the complaints found on the Etsy Boards, and have an Etsy that WORKED!  You really can't tell 'em apart except the Ugly Turquoise instead of Ugly Orange.

Also, Zibbet only has 55K sellers.  You could invest some money, add a jury, or maybe some rules with teeth, investigate complaints seriously, and penalize cheaters harshly!  Point is, you could clean it up on the cheap, and have an “Etsy Mirror”.

There are a whole bunch of ways to afford policing of the sellers on a site, which I see as the NUMBER 1 reason for not selling on these sites any longer.  The NUMBER 2 reason is the Bizarro World Of Rules,  that benefits the site only, and penalizes the sellers falsely, and unfairly.  (It's OK if you want to reverse the above 2 rules).

Not that I would like it at that point, but it seems like an easy way to start a HANDMADE / VINTAGE site.

Looking at A.C. Moore's website, http://www.acmoore.com/ , which is pretty nice, I'm not sure why they would want Zibbet, except to maybe get 3rd party sellers to do all the dirty work, like they do on Etsy (selling junk from Ali Baba), and getting a cut of it, with no inventory investment.  And of course the normal reason: To buy up & shut down any competitors.  That being the main strategy of ALL US corporations.....   In the name of lowering prices, and providing better service for us all....... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!)  And Blitzy seems about the same reasoning to me.  (Moore has a decent site now, for supplies)

I do find this interesting, and hold out hope for someone turning Zibbet into a real site.  So far, I think the likelyhood, is for just another badly run HANDMADE / VINTAGE site.

I still have an account at Zibbet, but quit listing long ago.  When I went there last week, to look at the community boards, they seem to be gone.  If anyone knows how to view them, please advise.  My old link was: http://community.zibbet.com/

I never ever heard of this site.  It must be a really small niche site.  Obviously, like Etsy, because they don't advertise, hardly anyone knows the name.

To:  BMOS     I love your comments and agree with just about everything you say.  For the longest time we have been wishing, hoping and praying for a new platform that will take Etsy's place.

Thus far, it hasn't happened as we all know and it seems everyone who tries to set up a great artisan handmade & vintage site runs out of gas, i.e. money.

My suggestion for would be developers is this:  why not take your idea and prototype to Shark Tank?  For those of you who are not familiar with the show, check it out online.  The "Sharks" are wealthy business people who invest in entrepreneurs with new business ideas.

I don't think anyone has ever proposed a new e-commerce platform to them.  Maybe if the developers of ArtYah or Zibbet went on the show to plug their platforms they maybe could get some investors.

On the other hand the advertising PR they'd get would be priceless.

every time a site has allowed multiple listings of redundent fakes and cheap copies from the Chinese... it has been all downhill from there.

Please stop calling Etsy a place to sell your handmade goods - they lose the right to call it that a long time ago - it's a site full of chinese junk now

Once they went "public" they became just another corporate machine and the machine is hungry

Don't feed the machine

Magnificent !   An Admirable, And  First Rate Idea!  Long Overdue !   An “E-commtest !  Why should we have to waste our precious breath in order to explain everything that Etsy IS NOT, every time we speak of her (Etsy).

And So (as they say) Hear Ye ! Hear Ye!  Come Gather Round !   All Those Within The Realm Of The Ex Good Queen Etsy !!!

Hear that an “E-commtest Submission & Subsequent Election”, has been proposed, and is open to all of the Queens' ''PREVIOUSLY'' loyal subjects !  To propose an accurate name for the online debacle currently known as “Etsy”, and to vote upon most favored and appropriate names.  Submissions are open until last call, voting begins sometime before closing time.  Ballots will be sent from the official committee to all previously loyal subjects.  Any currently loyal subjects (Except those in Rule 4)  are not eligible, as they already have a perfectly stupid name, to keep using.  Our own TOS, and the rules are stated below:

PUS (Pile Uv xxxx) ◄— example of un allowed word in this E-commtest.  By viewing this PUS, you agree to all terms within, both today, and in the future, if that is what I decide I want, either today, or sometime after today is over.

1)  The new name shall reflect the change from the ethical: “At One Time, Long, Long Ago, Mostly True Handmade & Real Vintage Marketplace”  (  Etsy  ), to the current and unethical: “Ocean Of Mass Knock Offs,  Antique Carp, Fake Precious Metals, Leather Goods, Jewelry, & All Manner Of Hucksters, Hawkers, And Peddlers”  (  ??Name??  ).
2)  There shall be no limitation on length of characters in the name, as there may be a need for some explanatory text, to make the new name clear to all.  Restraint is a virtue, and may be warranted here.
3)  Queen Etsy and her representatives (such as CEO, and also all his others shall be referred to at all times, with a modicum of respect and dignity, as becomes them, at least RELATIVE TO their past conduct and performance in the line of dudee (duty).  Remember please, that Dumbo is just the acronym for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass.  It is not an adjective used with management or teams.  That is spelled “DUMBAxx”, not “DUMBO”.
4)  No name calling of the still loyal subjects that are like our moms, because “It's not their fault”.  They either haven't figured it out yet, or they still have some sales.  Most just can't say anything bad about anyone, especially this close to Thanksgiving.  Most have enough to worry about, such as the 256 pairs of hand crocheted booties in your old bedroom.  For Cripes Sake, leave 'em alone.
5)  No attacks upon Nationalities or Ethnic groups will be permitted, as it has been noticed, that in the last several years, there are a large number of “AMERICANS” selling a  large number of “FAKES”.  These American sellers EMBRACE the foreign manufacturers they so boldly criticize, and then stock those FAKES in their own shops and studios, pretending them to be everything from Handmade Precious Jewelry, to Antique Hardware stripped from antique furniture.  These sellers are bottom feeding sponges and will not be given ballots, as they are of the same stripe as Mgmt & Mods (M&M's), and are not deemed to be “Sponge Worthy” —  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfQBKB4s1ks
6)  Each subject may submit one name for consideration, and after the E-commtest is over, shall have one vote in the Subsequent Election.
7)  The winning submission is hereby declared to be the best.
7a)  The prize shall be determined later, just as it is in the TOS of Etsy.
8)  No name submission shall contain a cuss word, having only four letters, without prior approval of at least one other previously loyal subject, and by submitting a formal change to these rules, under the rule change rules.  (See #9)
9)  These rules are changeable at any time, by a vote of ONE or more, of the previously loyal subjects, or their heirs and assigns.

My submission for new name of the old Etsy, is:  Exsy.  Not very good or catchy, but I like the “Ex”.

If I think of a better name, I will submit a rule change to Rule 6, under the Rule Change Rules (Rule 9), especially if anyone else is  ahead in the E-commtest.

I have been using the new ArtYah site.  It still has some glitches to be worked out but I am having sales and the owner is going out of his way to make the site work.  What other selling venue do you know that the owner sets up an appointment to give you a return call.  They swear no Chinese selllers and the site will be policed for true antique and vintage items.  Best of all I asked the owner outright if he ever plans to sell to investors or offering stock options.  I was given a restounding no.  So far so good.  Perhaps you would like to try listing some items here instead of complaining about the being ripped off over there.   Not a guarantee but if you want to put the crooked sites down under then why not give it a try?
