eBay Will No Longer Be Hands Off Says Executive

By: Ina Steiner

In a public relations misfire, eBay gave a reporter access to some of its top executives, but her story that came out today: "Nobody Thinks About eBay. Even with 171 million users, the online shopping giant is grasping for relevancy." Not the puff piece eBay may have been expecting.

eBay's Laura Chambers, Vice President of Consumer Selling told the reporter that eBay could not longer keep its "hands-off attitude" as competition heats up. "The authentication program is a good example of how we're getting a little bit more involved," she says, "and it represents a shift for us in terms of how we want to get in the transaction now.""

Chambers was referring to the eBay Authenticate program that launched today, which turns out to be a consignment service where the seller doesn't list the item or set the price.

The reporter also came away from the eBay briefings with a sentiment that sellers have been sounding for many years: "Competing with Amazon on the "new" end of the retail spectrum is futile,...," Chavie Lieber wrote.

"Many still believe eBay is the best option for vintage treasures, so why not own it," she wrote. "For now, though, the company has its sights set on pushing in the other direction, emphasizing the supposed shiny newness of what their sellers offer."

I look forward to having a moment or two to READ the details on this new  AUTHENTECATION PROGRAM  (read Consignment Program).  If just that ONE TEASER comment about how the OWNER/SELLER of the product won't be LISTING (describing accurately) or even  SETTING the PRICE.  YEOW !

Watching from the sidelines as THIS ONE Crashes and Burns will be almost as much fun as 'The Crash at Crush'..... Look it up on Wiki as it has b/w film of the INTENTIONAL Crashing of two obsolescent Steam Locomotives HEAD ON before a PAID Audience of thousands.

“Nobody Thinks About eBay”

No kidding aka no traffic!

“the online shopping giant is grasping for relevancy”

Could have just asked any of us here - we have been saying this for years!

I think the 3rd quarter earnings are out today or tomorrow. Lets see how the 10% TRS discount they took away from sellers boosted their earnings.

Part of the issue I think, people don't think of ebay because they just google what they are looking for nowadays, and since ebay hides our items in search, they aren't showing on google.

''ebay because they just google what they are looking for nowadays''

Well, after they check Amazon....

What is really sad, and those idiots at eBay really destroyed, is that if the buyer was looking for something that was not the latest crummy new commodity from China they went to eBay ''searched''  and most often found what they wanted.

Doesn't happen often now because the suits at ''only a venue'' eBay have really screwed the goose in trying to be Amazon II.

In 20 years, ebay will be a case study in business school.

"Why did a company which had CREATED a very successful brand - 'America's Garage Sale' - decide it needed to become Amazon instead?  What factors drove it to this decision?  Why did it ultimately fail?"

There are other websites that deal in authentic/authenticated merchandise.  Indeed, some manufacturers will do it for you.  They are trying to keep ahead of the counterfeits.  Real Real is just one example.

The price setting must be something that will be in the contract eBay will have with these consigners.  Can't see anybody agreeing to just ANY price they throw out without being consulted. That's crazy.

Had they taken steps to remove the fakes they already support, it wouldn't be necessary.  As far as relevance, they could have billed themselves as the biggest re-cycling (ecologically responsible and politically correct, right?) site on the planet and owned it.  But no.

It's their venue and they can do what they want but they could make better decisions and they'd serve themselves even more buy listening to their current users.  We may not all agree on what they should be doing, but it would be great if they acknowledged us and made us part of the solution.

Years before I met him, my husband liquidated most of his stock of musical instruments on eBay.  This was during the early years of Donohue.  He had no interest in a long term selling experience on eBay.  Eventually, he hired a friend to complete the process for him.

He hasn't shopped or sold there since, having accomplished what he wanted.  Maybe this kind of seller is all they want, not a long term seller.  Unless a mega corp, of, course.

And their moron "Chief Marketing Officer" has it EXACTLY BACKWARDS:

“We have all the things that so many brands want, but what we’re missing is the heart and soul.”

Yep. And the more like Amazon you become, the more "heart and soul" you'll be missing.

"eBay CEO Devin Wenig, who was not made available for this story, told investors in a call this winter that eBay has created 180 million landing pages using this new method of organizing eBay’s data."

??????????
Hmmm.  180 million "landing pages" for a billion listings?

***Someone*** at ebay doesn't understand what a "landing page" is for!

The article brings up some interesting points, and calls the organization of the over one billion items listed on eBay a ''Herculean Task''.

I have used this term more than once on here myself while referring to the amount of SHEER JUNK on eBay. Did the author of this story read ECB before writing it???

It also states that eBay is trying too hard to be Amazon, when they should just stay in their own lane (an observation echoed constantly on this blog).

Another thing Lieber mentions is that eBay was its own ''ecosystem'', where folks would sell their unwanted things to use the proceeds and purchase items they want. Since they have succeeded in running many sellers away from the site, these sales have been lost.

There is no mention of the constant fee increases / takeaways / unjust policies. Or the fact that eBay aids and abets scammers, and forces victimized sellers to refund dishonest buyers. Or the many other problems, which seem simple to correct or fix, but appear to be ignored.

As this story mentions eBay's problems with relevancy in the retail (specifically, eCommerce) market as a whole, their troubles go much deeper. Perhaps soon someone will publish something that describes the state of the site from a seller's point of view.

One thing for certain, if and when this is written it may open the eyes of many investors. Maybe they would think twice about purchasing stock in this organization. Tomorrow's 3Q financials may also do so........

'.....could not longer keep its "hands-off attitude" as competition heats up'

This may be, in my many years of selling, one of the most ridiculous statements that I have ever heard from a C-level executive at eBay.   Hands-off attitude?  Since when?  "a bit more involved"?  They are too involved as it is.  Good grief, they micromanage sellers to death.

eBay, here's some advice--build more warehouses, list and sell your items yourself, and send sellers on their way.   YOU lost your way and you will never find it again.  You had something quite amazing but your leaders' greed destroyed it.  You treated your customers (the sellers) horribly and they left you.   You ruined very successful businesses by manipulating search into a rigged card game..  You destroy them more and more every year with your mission creep.  You sold them down the river to pacify the Chinese, the big brands and the enterprise sellers.
End of story.  A BIG BOO HOO!

eBays own statements created the very monster this article talks about.

eBay told anyone that would listen that small sellers were an unreliable source of income. THAT statement and the greed that went with it - is causing eBay to "eat itself". At some point down the road aways (a yr or 2 or 3) - there will simply be NO MORE ways to skin the same cat and eBay stock will collapse and the company will go up for sale.

In a rush to create MORE INCOME, eBay is using and used every trick in the book. They simply view sellers as the fat cattle in the valley below, and as the vampires - swoop down to eat as much as they want when they want.

eBay does NOTHING for its fvf - and I dare any "cheerleader" to tell me differently.

eBay hires people who know nothing about the business its in, they allow for fraud on a magnitude that makes John Gotti proud, lies, cheats and steals - and still its not enough.

With the billions sitting offshore - eBay cant manage to even get decent CS people. Lord knows the people in the Filipinos are nice people - but they are not equipped to handle any of the situations that arise - especially when US based management FORCE them to script read, tell them that the seller is ALWAYS wrong, punishes them when they go off script, and then creates (and Im looking at you TRINTON) crap up as they go along.

Instead of working with sellers, they sit around and think of new ways to punish them .. just for spite.

Take the GD program .... if as the CEO said 2/3 of the packages are ALREAD being shipped in 2-3 days - then why was a NEW program even needed? Answer - to puinish those they dont like/cant do what they want - aka JUST FOR SPITE.

As mentioned above - sellers (like me) USED to buy stuff on eBay - now unless I have no choice - Ill just go to the sellers own website and buy it there. Why let eBay make 1 extra penny - they certainly DONT deserve it.

VERO sucks and thats being POLITE about it. Trusting eBay to authenticate ANYTHING is like asking Cuba to certify US elections.

I have invoices for EVERYTHING I sell, plus all my items have original tags - I dont need eBay to certify ANYTHING (especially since they are just dopes)(and know nothing about this industry)(maybe I should ask my 5 yr old nephew instead?)

I have access to high end brands - but as an eBay seller ... lord - it keeps me up at night .... I dont know how iPhone/iPad sellers do it ..... it gives me night terrors, since I know eBay will NEVER have my back - and being here since 1998 .... I have a track record of that to prove it.

Besides, VERO and its various shell game companies (NRGinternational, verowatch etc) are all getting paid on the side by manufacturers to kick people off eBay for "trademark and copyright violations" - when they know quite well - the goods are legit. They tried games on me and told eBay that SIGHT UNSEEN the goods we "fake" - and I proved them wrong with invoices from their own distributors. Stupid VERO people - Id rather ask monkeys in the zoo - at least they are intelligent creatures. And since meg said that any one of them could run eBay - any one in the zoo would be an improvement over Burke the moron.

Another day, another eBay game. Been there done that.

Free Advice to eBay...
1) Get rid of Made In China Sellers... let people risk their money buying direct.
2) Promote OOAK and Vintage & Antiques & Rare & Limited Edition / No longer available...
that AMAZON does NOT have.
Problem solved.

I agree with one of the comments here. (well, almost all of them actually lol) In 20 years this will be a case study at major business schools on how not to run companies and what not to do to take down portion after portion of what was a great performing business. In the end someone is going to lose a ton of money on their stock and Amazon is hell bent on helping that happen! Not that I side with Amazon too much BUT...anything is better than the what eBay has turned into and the direction it's headed. Hopefully these comments will be archived for the future to show everyone that EBay should be doing their home work and getting their operating tips from us! Who knows better than the people in the trenches or the ones that once were!?!?

This is a reference to eBay Should Split the Used market from the new market.  Spin this off.  before you kill it.  This will be "eBay USED"  (only)  Still a billion dollar company.  Very little to Tweek.  Spinn it off.  You will be glad you did!!  I would work for that company.

I see two major issues with this program:

1) eBay does the pricing and

2) If it doesn't sell within 60 days the item is returned to you.

Here is the problem: eBay is highly motivated to sell your merchandise within the 60-day period and as such will offer a very competitive price. That price may or may not cover your purchase price. I don't see how this can work in a seller's favor unless the seller purchased their luxury goods at greatly discounted prices.

Just wait until eBay experiences the switcheroo scheme. Buyer purchases an authentic bag, swaps it out for a replica bag and returns it to eBay for a 200% refund per their "guaranteed authentic or you'll receive a 200% refund."

Read through the entire article. 88% of Ebay sales are fixed price.  I find that hard to believe unless they are including BEST offer with the FP stat.
