Amazon to Build Fulfillment Network in Australia

Amazon is preparing to launch its fulfillment network in Australia, according to News.com.au, which says the company will open local warehouses in September. "For Australians accustomed to waiting weeks for items bought online to be delivered from overseas, its local warehouses will be a game changer," the publication wrote.

We asked logistics expert Marc Wulfraat about the report. Wulfraat is founder and President of MWPVL International, a supply chain and logistics company. He said Amazon's move into Australia is undoubtedly in the plans for 2017-2018 and called it long overdue.

Naturally our first thought was to wonder if this would be a plus or minus for retailers and online merchants. "The impact will be very beneficial for smaller mom & pop businesses seeking a way to distribute their products to the national Australian market as Amazon brings tremendous sophistication and capabilities in terms of providing third party logistics services to small businesses," Wulfraat told us.

However, for retail and wholesale distributors, it could prove devastating, he said.

News.com.au has great information about what's coming, and look for more on this story in the next issue of 411.

What would you tell merchants in Australia about the opportunities and challenges Amazon and its fulfillment network brings to online sellers?

Don't participate.

Whatever small benefits may be available will disappear in the future with incredmental increased warehousing fees and costs, and the commandeering of your product line by Amazon if it's a profitable fast mover.

Like ebafia, Amazon is not a good business partner for many sellers.

Looks like Amazon is borrowing one from eBay's global make a fortune for eBay shipping program.

Australian buyer orders something from America Amazon.  Buyer pays full boat for delivery.  Amazon consolidates this order and hundreds of others saving mega bucks on shipping.  Instead of giving the savings back to the buyer, Amazon (like eBay) will pocket mega bucks.
