US Postal Inspection Service Funds TV Program on CBS

Last year we told you about a new TV program about fictional US Postal Inspectors and their efforts to thwart consumer fraud and postal crime. We learned today that the US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) contracted with a company to produce and air the program.

Deadline.com investigated and discovered that the USPIS awarded the syndication firm $5.4 million that runs through September 2016, "with potential to extend the contract for an additional two one-year option periods." The program airs on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. on CBS.

The Deadline article quotes the USPIS in response to its Freedom of Information Act request:

"The total awarded amount has been paid to the supplier ... from the asset forfeiture and consumer fraud awareness funds, designated for specific purposes which include consumer fraud and prevention education. USPS rate-payer dollars are not involved in the production. The United States Postal Inspection Service is the sole agency within the Postal Service that uses this fund and it is not a part of the overall Postal Service operating fund."

The article raises some thought-proving issues about the role of government, and whether it should be paying for a TV program. (It's worth reading the whole article.)

And if you're interested in the economics of TV shows, here's one from 3 years ago from Priceonomics.

We wonder if "The Inspectors" television show is making consumers more aware of fraud.

What kind of consumer fraud and prevention education campaign would you run if you were the USPIS? And what kind of postal-related fraud is most troubling for online sellers?

The real postal inspectors officers have their hands full arresting postal employees for theft. Technology has come a long ways in the Postal system. They can activate cameras in the post offices remotely at any time..and they use this option a lot.

the cameras that watch the employees and how they handle the mail.

a branch with powers that exceed most law enforcement departments. including warrant-less searches that exceed just the mail itself.

Yesterday, there was an article of a Florida postman and vehicle driving to a pizzaria's dumpster to empty his vehicle.

Are any of these people being jailed. Do they still get rewarded for a federal offense with their postal pension.

Worked for the Post Office over 35 years. They do catch thief a lot but it does take time so they can get all the evidence and have a tight case. Our facility processed over 5 million pieces of mail a day and just the sheer volume it takes a while to pin down the exact person or persons doing the thief.

I like the usps a lot and the employees there are fine people, mostly. I am sure it is well less than 1% that have sticky fingers. Technology will crush them as memory storage and transmission of surveillance becomes easy and dirt cheap.

I can see this extended to trucks, carriers and every aspect of the postal system if needed. Cheap easy efficient surveillance is the criminals biggest fear. This will be in all parts of society.. 1984 is here to stay :-) LOL bad news for thieves.

saying that .. they hauled off the po box stuffer at the PO i was using. She had no fear of getting caught was single mom and totally stupid. they took her out in handcuffs for massive theft. None of that stuff is returned to the rightful owners by the way.

With artificial intelligence and face recognition a reality are we far from a program that can detect theft and most crime without the use of humans? 10 to 20 years away? put something in your pocket? the computer busts you and orders your arrest?

Though the technology is developed, It would be better if they find and punish the scams and fraud who are involved in the thefts.
