Etsy Featured in Tips on Buying from China

Sellers are buzzing about this article in the UK's Money Saving Expert called "12 Buying From China Tips Incl AliExpress and other marketplaces." Some sellers are keying in on the fact that the article includes Etsy along with AliExpress, eBay, and Amazon.

The article stated, "It started as an online home for all things crafty - now Etsy sells clothes, jewellery, homewares and more, produced by people from across the world, from the UK to China."

News Article Sets off Debate about What Etsy Has Become

A reader sent us the news tip this morning, writing, "This link is interesting particularly for a supposed "handmade site," linking to this thread on the Etsy boards where sellers are debating the message.

Some posters say they hope it brings attention to Etsy in the UK where they say it isn't well known enough.

Others say it's a sends a message that Etsy is a good place to get cheap mass-produced goods. And that started a debate about whether Etsy does enough to enforce its rules and keep non-complying sellers off the site.

"Money express could well have thought their info was correct, on a happier note Etsy had a positive mention in the Telegraph yesterday as a handmade site on their money page," a seller wrote. "It's rare that I see it mentioned in UK so that's most encouraging, they stated that it was a handmade site."

Presumably the seller was referring to this article, which profiles a successful Etsy seller. "Etsy - best for vintage or handmade items," the article states.

But the article also provides a clue into the challenge Etsy and its sellers face - can the company scale if each seller must make their own items with no assistance? The seller featured in the article was quoted saying, "My fingers were sore and all the knitting was beginning to take a toll on my hands." Can sellers make a living if they're required to make each and every item by themselves?

Etsy CEO Chad Dickerson is set to give a keynote address shortly (10 am ET) at the Etsy Up conference in NYC - here's a link to attend the session virtually. The issue of Etsy expanding its definition of handmade is bound to arise.

I am not sure if you need to be chinese to list chinese Alibaba products on Etsy. I am fairy sure a lot of the original seed money for etsy came from china and the deal was to allow Chinese products on the site. they have remained so for at least 5 years.

exact same items are on Alibaba and yet etsy places this "stuff" on page one of search.. for 5 years straight.

my favorite item? yes 5 years and counting on page one of Etsy search:

as a side note.. i closed my shops on Etsy totally..  I live in the USA. When I visit Etsy.. the items are listed in Australian Dollars.. :-) The incompetence just goes on and on at this garbage site.

We all knew it, but here's a link to a class action that appears to finally be making an appearance.

The rot comes from the top.

LeeLoo
Thanks for posting the Etsy l/21/16 lawsuit link.  Interesting reading.  Gives some insight on how corporate Etsy operates.

yes, the hypocrisy of it all. They close down threads and mute sellers in a NY minute if one brings up sellers from China, or resellers, or copyright infringers in the Forums, yet they purposefully make their own staff look the other way when certain sellers break the rules. If one looks up Etsy on Google, here's how it is defined according to Wikipedia: ''Etsy is a peer-to-peer e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies, as well as unique factory-manufactured items.'' ''Unique factory manufactured items'' - just try searching for ''paisley beach bag'' on Etsy to see what Etsy allows. Meanwhile honest hard working sellers running their own shops and making their own products using their own designs have to scramble to make up for their greatly diminished incomes while these ''unique'' items take over the site, and compete for visibility. Just try having a product for a children's birthday party without a Disney licensed character on it, see how deeply you get buried behind all the counterfeit stuff. The author of the blog is absolutely right to include Etsy with those other venues. At least the other venues have the backbone to call a spade a spade, instead of hiding behind the ''handmade'' and ''unique factory manufactured'' spectacle Etsy invented.

etsy needs money, they don't care how they get it, mass produced, fake, copyright infringement, and trickery, it's all good at the etsy company, and their stock prices are going way up, investors like what they are doing.

Ina, you miss a great opportunity to emblazon the Etsy text logo with the colors and elements of the Chinese flag.

Too much cheap, Chinese junk jewelry is showing up on Etsy as handmade. Ruining the site, soon you can't find honest hand made jewelry from all the junk. Just like eBay...I've still got my store there, and I sell as a supplier (loose gemstones, beads), but I can't compete with free Chinese shipping either. I carry quality items, authentic gemstones, not glass passed as gemstones...but their prices are so dirt cheap buyer should know better....

It is plain to see from the link to the Class Action Suit by Shareholders how Etsy has turned their head to cheap manufacturing. They claimed to vet them but only did it AFTER they were selling and depended on sellers to report but still turned their head in order to keep making money on them if they were selling a lot. In the IPO they lied:

It's interesting that Etsy has decided use of the words China and Chinese in the forums are racist. All posts using "the C word" without a childish euphemism are generally shut down. Initially when Etsy still had an ethical compass based in actually supporting handmade, they didn't allow sellers based Asia in the first place. Etsy is no longer Etsy, and it hasn't been for years. Once handmade was redefined by Chad to include mass produced junk, Etsy ceased to exist. Now it's just clever marketing for inexpensive tat.

Its all a joke.

I would no more buy from China that I would ever ship again.

Just in a dispute regarding extortion for duties and taxes.

Unbelievable BS in dealing with this nonsense.

Etsy sold its soul - so lets be honest about that and move on the best we can.

The denial and lies are what really tick me off though.
